Redskins June 2009 OTAs
Redskins are back to work with OTAs. I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread to discuss them. A good recap on the first day from redskins.com:
Redskins Resume On-Field Work With OTAs Some things to note... - Some vets out for the first day (Landry, Portis, Fletch, and Sellers) - Rogers and Barnes out sick - Orakpo still practicing at SLB - Malcolm Kelly participated fully on the first day - Heyer expected to take over at RT, faces competition - Williams back at 385 lbs. - Samuels is back at his LT spot |
Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
i like the things that were said about m.kelly by zorn, sounds like he is on the way. i hope that d.thomas is able to do the same, and make this a bout for the 2nd receiver position.
|
Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
I like hearing that Malcolm is out there running routes at full speed. I really don't like that we're messing around with switching Orkapo's natural position.

Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
Well they sure as hell had a beautiful day to start June OTA's. It was glorious today in the DC area. I'm not gonna lie, I took about and hour and half in the middle of the day today and played a quick 9 holes. It was great.

Well, everything (generally) appears to be going well for the team.. I just hope they would be able to continue this out through to the season.. |
Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
yay for M. Kelly! I am definitely excited about let's hope he makes to the regular season.
|
Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
Good for Kelly, hopefully he can stay on the field and be productive for us.
|
Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
Good to see Kelly out there, this guy could make a big difference in our offensive production. Thomas is looking good also.
|
Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
Im really interested to see how long Orakpo lasts at SLB. When we drafted him, I never imagined that we'd use him there.

Where did you play at? I keep wnating to hit up Cross Creek, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. |

Samuels sounds like he's in shape..

Just a quick 9 at Sligo Creek. It's normally a goat path, but I couldn't believe what good shape the course is in. I guess a month straight of nothing but rain will do that. It was really enjoyable. The old fella in the clubhouse said it was the best conditions he's seen in all his years working there. My friggin putter was killing me yesterday. I'd like to hit up Cross Creek, too. I think I played it once back when I was in high school, but I don't remember. I remember Hampshire Greens being a fun course, but I haven't played there in a while. |

Great article! This was the most positive Skins news i've seen in a long time. Hall is showing big intensity! Devin looks like a whole different guy! Just good stuff all around. I still worry a lot about the endurance along the o-line. My hope is we sign another solid guy but that looks unlikely at this point. |

It is the official Redskins blog, keep that in mind. |

I think Goat was talking about hearing positive news in general. Yes it is the Redskins blog and they are going to put a positive spin to everything, but it is good to know in general that Malcolm Kelly is practicing at full speed or that Samuels is back and healthy. Personally for once it is nice to discuss real news about OTAs, and not discussing speculations, theories, and/or other topics that have been discussed to death (i.e. QB). |

He's usually around 315 right? |
Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
I'm really happy for the battle at RT; so sure, maybe we don't have 3 pro bowlers battling it out, but we have 3 guys who seem hungry doing that work. That really can't do anything more than to make whoever earns it that much better.

Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
I really am getting nervous about the amount of time Orakpo is spending at SLB. I guess this is how a newly wed wife would feel about her husband going out to a strip club with his buddies. Sure it's not cheating but still :D
Anyway at the very least I hope they're planning on using some offset 4-3 looks with Orakpo lined up outside of Daniels as that would at least get him a chance to come off the edge. Something like this ---W---M------- ---------------S E--T---T---E---- |

Lol, it's like Malcolm Kelly broke his right leg today but thats ok because at least he didn't break his other leg. |
Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
Redskins.com:Team unprepared, demoralized at OTA's.
The Redskins, as they usually do, seemed to take an unenthusiatic approach to their offseason work. Said left tackle Chris Samuels, who once again is coming back from injury, "I've lost seven to ten pounds of muscle. It's OK, though. I'll maybe get some of it back." On the other side of the ball, rookie Brian Orakpo weighed in with his thoughts on the upcoming year, "It's a totally different atmoshpere up here than it was in college. At Texas, every day felt like building towards something. Here they all just seem to blend together." ... |

Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
Here's todays write up from Reskins.com. I found it interesting that Largent had to stop the WR's practice to talk to them and give them pointers. Pretty bad when an outsider sees the players doing something that could be fixed and has to call a halt to their practice to tell them and the positions coach failed to do so. Wait we are talking about Stan "The Man" Hixon.
Has there ever been a problem with a Congressman having a second job? Would it be illegal for DS to hire Largent as the position coach? lol. While he a Congressman? On The Field For OTAs, Along With Steve Largent Edit: Also every time I see the WR's Williams and Mitchell I get excited at how tall they are. I hope they both could work out for us and maybe push for Thrash's job. I know, I know, The team will only keep 5 active and on PS ....maybe. So you have Moss, ARE, Thomas, Kelly, and maybe they could keep them as endzone threats for the red zone. |

I'm not sure if they ever allowed a Stork to play in the NFL before? If that guy doesn't get his leg broken in about thirty two places before preseason ends it will be a miracle. |

haha good point but any non injury/holdout news is good news at this point. And also, it is better than if Zorn or one of the coaches said something to the effect of "we are still trying to get him caught up" or "oh...he was able to go out there and run around" about the wr's or the o'line. the fact that all the news out of the OTAs is solid is a positive... |

Huh...based on the performance of anyone under Hixon's tutelage I just assumed the guy didn't even make it to practices :) |

Man, I can't wait until Training Camp! OTA's are nice but it's really just guys running around in shorts without any contact.

Glad to hear this coming from Rogers. I do think Rogers and Hall compliment each other and together they will make a good CB tandem for our team. The added pressure on the d-line from AH and company should translate into more picks.

Hall seems to be more concerned about his Madden rating than who is playing across from him though. Out of all injustices possible, being a 62 in that game has to be up there. |

Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs
Hixon so needs to be canned now. A guy who's been pretty much out of serious football and is going solely by his experience as a player for a while can catch things he's missed. I'll bet whatever pointers -no matter how 'little' they seemed to be- he gave out will produce some major results this season.

I don't doubt that Steve Largent has a wealth of knowledge about the game, but come on. You really think his short visit to one practice during a voluntary, non-contact session in June is going to produce "major results" during the regular season??? If that's the case, then I could be doing a better job than Hixon. I highly doubt that. I'm not a huge Stan Hixon fan, but really. If he is that bad he'd have been canned a long time ago. In case you haven't noticed, Danny isn't the most patient owner. |
