Predict this year's surprise cut
In year's past there have been some unexpected moves, but this year it seems like maybe releasing Jansen was the big surprise.
Who could be the most recognizable name that would be an unexpected camp casualty this year? |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Fred Smoot
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I think I'm going with Todd Collins. I doubt it will happen, but if Colt Brennan has a huge camp and preseason and somehow secures the #2 role there is no way Todd makes the team.
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I'm not saying I'm for it, but with our DE situation, I won't be totally surprised if Jackson gets cut.
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Rock Cartwright or in the alternative Fred Smoot.
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I'm gonna go with Malcolm Kelley. It would be a surprise, but if he can't get on the field during preseason to show that he can help out on ST he might have no position.
|

my pessimistic side was just thinking Malcolm Kelly going on IR. I don't think he's gonna get as much slack as last year if his knee starts acting up during training camp, he may be the odd man out. My optimistic side says that his knee will hold up and he and DT will make an outstanding rotation depending on the on field situation. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I don't know. We have so much nice talent all over......
RB: could be Rock or Betts if Zorn is looking for a change of pace back. CB: could be Smoot due to age and having slowed down. DE: could be Wynn, Buzbee, etc. QB: the only thing I see TC bringing to the team is being a Vet. Knowing tricks of the trade and reading defenses. RG: could Randy Thomas get beat out? his neck injury sounded scary. C: I would like someone bigger and harder to bowl over. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Rock Cartwright. In part because the new kickoff rules will probably make him less effective and it also seems the team really is looking for a poor mans Warrick Dunn (ie a speed back). Chris Wilson will also probably get cut, and Collins will get cut if Colt beats him out for the number 2 spot.
I think Betts is safe because it'll look real bad to cut him after he signed a contract for much less then he would have gotten otherwise so I think the team is intent on letting him play out his contract. |

The team tried everything to get him on the field even though he had it. They finally decided to go the surgery route. Due to doctors not competely cleaning it out he still had soreness. Since his surgery in Jan or Feb. I think he is finally able to play and not feel pain. He supposedly looked good in the OTA's. I'm betting both MK and DT come out with something to prove. or I guess I hope so. LOL. But he easily could be let go if he continues to have issues with his knees. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I hope for funs sake they explore everything like having an all speed play....
Moss, DT, Eloi as WR's Alridge and Dorsey as RB's Just to see what it would allow. maybe replace Alridge or Dorsey with Portis or Betts in the back field to block and make teams scramble to cover the speedier WR's and send the scat back out for a pass after having play actioned to portis up the middle. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I like Rock but nonetheless I have to say Rock.

Ohh, now that's a good one. How many irate responses would follow if I said Chris Cooley? |

Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Todd Yoder........This cut will make room on the roster for an adittional running back
In the NFC East youve gotta have 2-3 good backs |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I say Lorenzo Alexander and Reynaldo Wynn
|

No way. We're not gonna cut a 2nd year 2nd round pick. If his knee doesn't hold up, we'll IR him, free up a roster spot for the rest of the season, and make a final decision on him based on his rehab and next year's mini-camps. I don't think Yoder makes the team, and I don't think it will be a surprise. Fred Davis should be better, and Eddie Williams ability to play FB and TE will make Yoder pretty expendable. I could see Rock and/or Smoot going. If Dorsey or Alridge shows that they can add some explosiveness to the return game and add a dimension to the backfield, Rock could be gone. Smoot... well... I like the guy, but he just looked flat out bad last year. With the addition of Barnes and JT Tryon in his second season, Smoot could be out the door. Imagine though, the Skins without Smoot, Rock, and Jansen? Definitely a different locker room. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
ARE, not worth the $$ he is making IMO

Not a chance in hell. He'll earn $4.1M this year on the 53 man. If we cut him, it costs us $13.4M. And if we cut him next year, it will cost us almost $11M towards the cap. Get used to him. If we're lucky we'll at least get to use him out of the slot most of time this season. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
T. Collins
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Looks like the annual "Rock Cartwright should be cut" event may actually take place. LOL.
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Rock Cartwright.

i have a hard time seeing rock getting cut. he's to good on special teams. i also can't imagine smoot being cut, he did stuggle a bit last season but he should be fine this year covering the teams 3rd or 4th wr. my guess is yoder, alexander, buzbee. none of which will be a big surprise. |

I agree. |

How many irate responses would follow if I said Chris Cooley?
Probably not too many actually because that's such a ridiculously insane idea. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I'm not sure there will be a "big" surprise cut. The most notable name if I had to pick one, Renaldo Wynn.
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Corneilus Griffin would definitely be a shocker but, I'd be OK with that because we'd be getting younger and making good use of our draft talent.
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Every year Rock is on the short list. I love it.
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
the way grey was talking about tryon i think smoot is in trouble.

And he's only proved us wrong what, 7 or 8 times now? |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Kelley hasn't been able to prove his worth yet, so he will stick around another year at least(Jacobs was with us forever it seemed). Collins is staying, you need a vet in case of emergencies, not a second year guy. Would love to see McDaniels really make things interesting. Chase played in a real conference in college and made the most of it. It was just too bad that both OU and Texas were so strong last season. Texas Tech included. Everybody says Cartwright, even in the old Wash Post Skins blog, and he always rises to the occasion, so he is staying. The best bet for surprise cut is Smooty. Just isn't the killer CB he was back in the days we had Champ with him. Next would be one of the older defensive linemen since we got the DE from UK off the supplemental draft. Good move in my book, but it probably means a vet is gone. Would have made this #1, but since it is a surprise cut Smoot won out.
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I'd say randle el...but thats impossible due to cost...so really no one is at risk on offense, except perhaps Betts or Rock....and we dont have any real threat this year to either of them....Collins is a lock in my mind.
On defense, Smoot could be cut...but I seriously doubt it...you need 3 starting CBs with experience...it would be stupid to cut him. I really think the only folks that would get cut this year are backups. So my vote would be....ROCK gone because some rookie RB did some crazy good stuff in camp. We have other options to return kicks. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Cutting Wynn, Daniels, wouldn't shock me.
|
Cutting Wynn, Daniels, wouldn't shock me.
I think it's an either/or situation with those two. We need some solid vets to help bring along Orakpo and Jarmon. If I had to pick one of those two to kelp, it would be PD. I'd be pretty surprised if they both got the ax. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
And he's only proved us wrong what, 7 or 8 times now?
I'd argue the biggest difference this year is that we made a point to get players that fit the profile of a change of pace/speed back with KR/PR abilities. I doubt Zorn has the type of allegiance to Rock that Gibbs had and either Aldridge or Dorsey bring a definitive difference in speed and quickness we've lacked for years at the 3rd back/KR/PR. I think with any proficiency by Aldridge, Rock is gone. The other 2 players I think may be in trouble are Wynn, because if it comes down to him and Rob Jackson Vinny will keep his draft pick over a 30+ vet and Randy Thomas. Thomas likely won't get cut but I think Jeremy Bridges will beat him out for the starting RG spot. |

Josh McDaniels? I think he's had an interesting enough offseason. :) I know where you were going. It could be very interesting if Daniel outplays Brennan in the pre-season. |

Since when does a conference make a QB better than the other? look at the top QB's in the league right now. Manning -SEC- Brady-Big 10-. How bout Rivers,McNabb and Big Ben? not exactly powerhouse conferences. Im glad Chase got his shot but the chances of him making the team are slim. IMO the ONLY way he makes the team is if CB beats out TC and then he is cut because noway do we pay him the $$ he will make this yr to be 3rd string. |
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
Fred Smoot should start thinking about his upcoming pro-bowling career.
|
Re: Predict this year's surprise cut
I think Smoot lasts one more year. I don't think Rock or Renaldo getting cut would necessarily be a surprise. And Thrash is, of course, gone already.
I'll say Suisham...and Randy Thomas (just to keep this exciting) |
