DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
Training Camp Practice Report For Aug. 5
As first reported by Matt Terl on his Twitter page, D.J. Hackett is at practice on Wednesday. It appears he has been signed by the team, but no official word yet. Hackett is a 5-year veteran who played for the Carolina Panthers last season after four years with the Seattle Seahawks. He played for current Redskins head coach Jim Zorn during his time in Seattle. Hackett participated in Redskins mini-camp in early May, so he has a degree of familiarity with the offense. Hackett has 118 career receptions for 1,575 yards and nine touchdowns. Last year, he was a reserve with Carolina and logged 13 catches for 181 yards. Hackett was a fifth-round draft pick by the Seahawks in the 2004 NFL Draft. |

Rather seen them get a OL guy. =(

ditto, we already have a healthy competition going on at wr... |
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
we definitely have enough younger guys at that spot. but i guess coach has some back ground with Hackett
|
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
Good signing. R. Williams is out for 4-6 weeks so Hackett takes his spot & is about as close a replacement you can find in terms of age, experience.

Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
per Redskins blog, we also have a guy michael marquant from Eagles squad, but I can't find anything on him. Anyone know who he is?

Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
from the training camp updates
-- 9:08 a.m. ET Another New Redskin The Redskins have signed first-year defensive tackle Michael Marquardt, the team has announced. Sounds like just another camp body. |
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
This WR move should have little to no impact on the cap situation. Roydell and Hackett should offset one another.
The only scenario in which the cap is even a factor anymore is if we decide to bring in an experienced OT (ahem, Runyan). |
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
Well, I guess we did give Hackett a call
Mixed feelings on this. I like Hackett when healthy, but that's not often. And I don't know what he offers as a special teamer |

I hear people calling out his name, but I get the feeling that he would demand more than we could afford. On a similar note, if the team is bringing a lineman to camp (and not just a camp body like some of these signings) it has to be a good acquisition like Jones or Runyan. Otherwise there's not need to sulk about the team signing camp bodies like Hackett or that DT they just signed. |

The alternative of counting on Heyer to get healthy, stay healthy and produce at the level we need for a whole season is much more scary to me. |

Schneed had sad we had roughly 1-1.5 mill in cap, so we would have to do a maybe a 3yr deal with 1.5 million signing bonus and vet min base. I still think its doable, and would like to see it, but I don't see it happening. |

As Ruhskins mentioned, these guys are basically camp bodies aren't they? I can't see us keeping them. Hackett knows some of the plays so he can run them against our D and the DT helps with some of the nicks on our d-line. Plus AH is liable to kill someone out there. |

If he's still around mid to late in camp & Heyer is nicked & Williams is still struggling (see RI today), history would indicate that vinny would look to make a move a la the Kendall & JT trades. At least Levi is a FA. Since Zorn has said that they're going w/the guys they have now at RT, the question is who would get cut to make room? How much time do they give MW? Do they look at him as being able to play in , say week 8? He can't go on the practice squad. |

That's about right. And I'd agree, I'd like to see it happen. |
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
This move keeps considerable heat on young WRs Mitchell and Eloi for what might be a single roster spot. Competition is a good thing in camp, and hopefully Hackett's presence will bring the best out of the youngsters.
|
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
When Hackett is healthy, he's good. But as SS said, that isn't often. Hackett is there to put some pressure on the young bucks. If he makes the final 53, it'll mean Mitchell and Eloi weren't quite ready for the Big Show.

Mitchell & Eloi are PS eligible, but the 4 & 5 wr's often play spec. teams. That might be their shot at making the 53. I hope Mitchell can stick, he sounds like a good project that could pay off in 3 years. |
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
I dont care one bit for Hackett. I am slowly becoming paranoid about our OLine....
Someone help me gain sanity. |

Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
I like the move. I am not quite sure why Roydell Williams got the original spot over Hackett in mini-camp. All reports were that Hackett looked pretty good, unless of course, Hackett and the Skins were off in money.
|
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
DJ Hackett is more than a camp body guys, this is the 5th WR, weve already got 2 young 2nd round WR's that we are counting on for production. The rest of these young guys are going on the PS...Hackett has more experience in our offense than any of the starters.....

Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
As others have said the key with Hackett is staying healthy, something he has struggled with. If he can make the team as the #5 and stay healthy he will be a nice pickup.

Apparently we've offered contracts to Hackett twice and both times he said no to the vet min. The third time was the charm. |

Matty I remember you saying he might have star potential, or at least decent starter ability, after the 07 when the Skins first talked to him. I also thought he was about to breakout, maybe it was just his big game on us in the playoffs. Maybe he wasn't a good fit for carolina or one of his injuries slowed him down a lot, cause something seems odd about his drop off last year. |

He would be an excellent #5. In fact, he would make a damn good #4. I like the signing. |

Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
I like it a lot, Hackett can be like another coach to teach the WRs the system a little better. I definitely think he could be the #4. If nothing else he'll push Malcolm Kelly to get better so he makes sure he is at least the #4.
|
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
Had him ranked above Bernard Berrian in last year's free agency rankings, but what a difference a year can make, huh? Doubt he makes the team.
This is a good indicator that the Skins will keep 6 WRs though. |
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
If i remember right 2yrs ago we were looking to sign this guy, if he stays healthy and that's a big ? it will be a good pick up.

Definitely. It isn't out of the question that he could beat out Thomas for the #2 or play the slot. You can't discount his knowledge of the system. |

You can't discount his knowledge of the system.
I can't believe what I am hearing and seeing here regarding DJ Hackett. He couldn't stay healthy in Seattle and couldn't stay healthy in Carolina. Knowing the system and JZ is all fine and good but I would have liked to have seen a move to bolster the O line. The Panthers had such little faith in him they cut him and are going with Dwayne Jarrett as there No. 3. So you do the math on that one. |

So you'd want them to pick up a cheap offensive lineman just like the ones we already have? Because it's not like Hackett is some major acquisition, he is probably here on the vet min. |
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
Don't think i want DJ to be our #3 i want DT & MK out their playing but he would be a good #5 if he stays healthy. I want all are WR to be #1's make Zorn's decision a difficult one.

Teams make personnel moves all the time. Hackett was a poor fit for Carolina who is not a west coast team. Dwayne Jarrett was a second round pick. I would think they would want him to get a shot at some point. Kelly, Thomas and R. Williams can't stay healthy either. Who would you rather count on? Marko Mitchell? Hagans? Eloi? It seems that the coaches do not want to bring another O-lineman in right now. So we have to live with it. |
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
Man, Hackett is a nice signing. He has experience in the west coast offense and Zorn is familiar with him. If he stays healthy and I realize that is a big if, he is a very good #4 or #5 and can even start if needed due to injury. If he cant stay healthy we cut him and move on with one of the young guys. I have no problem at all with this pickup.
|
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
If he can stay Healthy he is a great pick up. Thats the key. This guy has a history of injuries. That was my point.
|
Re: DJ Hackett has signed and is at practice
He could be a great signing. If and I stress if he can stay healthy. He has been known for injuries and also what rubs me the wrong way about him...is last season we tried to sign him and he blew us off and signed with the panthers for more money so maybe my perception of him is a little biased.

that's what i don't get on all the get a lineman talk, if we can get a proven starter, then great, but if we are picking up another body, we've got those. |
