Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
Depending on how camp shakes out I wouldn't mind seeing Kendall back as a reserve.
|
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
good post MIke, I read this earlier too. After reading what slingin sammy said R. Thomas looked like, Kendall might HAVE to come back.
|
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
I kinda like Kendall but Bridges is the same kind of utility guy...I dont get why we'd pick him up....unless 2 thinks happen, Randy Thomas cant play AND Rhinehart isn't ready to start. Kendall is not a viable option at Tackle at all.
I still see the main concern at RT....first, we need a starter and 2nd we need another backup cause it is beginning to look like Mike Williams aint ready for prime time. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
Signing OL during training camp is too little too late.
This should have been the main focus during FA and the draft. Kendall coming in during training camp isn't going to make any difference in our overall OL production. My personal opinion is that it is sad that everyone is placing this enormous expectation on Campbell to step up and be "pivotal" when all that mean squat if he constantly evading defenders every snap. The Skins knew Campbell had to "step up" this year and perform as expected but yet yielded no support in signing/drafting any OL help in the offseason.(Losing Kendall neutralizes signing Dockery) Campbell possibly could have matured and become seasoned enough to where he could lead a team to the post season...we'll never know because management left him out to dry this season. If you don't agree with that, then you can at least agree to this. Two years ago receiving was one of our major problems. We draft 3 receivers with our first 3 picks. Last year our biggest liability was obviously our OL. We sign/draft no one to additionally help the OL and then expect Campbell to "step up" and play well in his pivotal year?...yeah right. Good luck to Campbell but I'm just not seeing everyone's expectation of success with our offense. |

I watched a ton of football last year (every Skins game and quite a few others) and honestly believe we had the worst overall oline in the league after week 8. We were basically old, very small and very, very slow. JC had no time. Run-blocking was average at best. People point to the oline as a huge part of CP's early success, but I tend to think Portis, like him or not, is one of the best backs in football and made our oline look much better than it was. Fastforward to this year and it's basically the same faces out there, and the additions are nothing to get excited about. The news on big Mike over the last week tells me he won't make us better any time soon...if ever. Bridges should be decent at guard but doesn't appear to be a dominant OT. So basically we've got two "devoted" OTs on the roster at this point...one coming back from major injury and the other nothing special and surprisingly injury prone for a young guy. To me it looks like the FO doesn't want to give JC the opportunity to be great. I think bringing in another legit OT, namely Levi Jones, would be the smart move and make a strong statement... |

Good luck to Campbell but I'm just not seeing everyone's expectation of success with our offense.
I don't agree to that. We got younger at LG with a guy who's been a starter and Samuels feels very comfortable playing next to in Dockery. We added another starter in Bridges for the right side. We're admittedly taking a gamble in Mike Williams, but if it happens to pay off it would be a steal. We drafted Rinehart in the 3rd round last year with the expectation he would develop, we signed a guy many thought would be a mid round draft pick in Edwin Williams. We are going to need to develop more tackles long term but we're definitely making improvements along line especially the interior. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
I definitely see Dock as an upgrade over Kendall. He gives us a lot more beef and power on the left side. Kendall is more of a technician type and he's on the small side.
I'm thinking we could see Bridges starting at RG, and that might not be a bad thing at all. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
If we can use him, I'd be ok with that............GOOD DUDE

I'm with ya. I see developments over last year. Though they may not be major. We got hammered last year by some of the top defenses in the leauge last year. We didnt get handled by every team last year. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
Maybe I am reading this incorrectly, but from what I read here, it almost sounds like Kendall would immediately jump at the chance to accept a vet min contract to be a backup here.
A wise man once said, "The future is now" and those words definitely apply to Jim Zorn and Jason Campbell in Washington. If I were Zorn, I would ask for them to offer Kendall a deal. I understand that we have some young linemen and that we need time to "coach them up". Zorn doesn't have that much time. He needs to win this year. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
Randy Thomas' health problems while not a good thing in general, are allowing Rinehart to get more reps against an elite defensive line. While it may be a good idea to pick up another veteran back up, it is time for these young guys to step it up and show what they got. Having these guys take a lot of reps will make them better back ups and potential starters.

Agreed, Kendall is 36 and we've got a lot of young guys we need to throw into the fire. Everybody was always complaining about how old our O-line is and now they want to sign Kendall and not give the young guys a chance. I think Rinehart and Bridges are good enough, there's even been positive stuff said about Will Montgomery. If we add a player to the O-line it should be a tackle. |

He was one of our better O lineman last year and we still sucked at protection. I know everyone remembers that "pivotal" Ravens game last year where TSizzle made a mockery of what was left of our OL. To me it doesn't seem that much has been changed to stabilize or improve the line as a whole.
I think Rinehart and Bridges are good enough, there's even been positive stuff said about Will Montgomery. If we add a player to the O-line it should be a tackle.
Some of the names people are bringing up as solutions to our OL woes are baffling to me. Reinhardt wasn't even trusted to get time in a real game down the stretch when we had so many injuries people like Justin Geslinger were left battling the likes of TSizzle. If Bridges was so prolific then why isn't he already slated as a solid starter with guys like Thomas & Heyer battling injuries? To me, bottom line, our OL was pedestrian at best last year and we lost (Kendall & Jansen) and only added Dockery. That's certainly not enough improvement to look Campbell in the face and say it's now up to you. Love the Skins and anyone else who disagrees, just MHO. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
Lets see what Reinhardt can do, if he sux, put in Bridges. Dont add more age with Kendall to the OLine. Im more worried with RT and our back up to Samuels.
|
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
We all (including me) seem to discount the idea that Heyer, in his third year, could "get it" and bust loose as a quite good RT.
I'm not saying this is true; I'm saying that it could be true and, if so, RT is no longer the worry that it has been. |

Those are both good questions. My point was that many of us seem to think of the RT position as half-empty and we seem not to consider the half-full perspective as much. As for Samuels, Buges talked the other day about Devin Clark filling in for Samuels, not Heyer like last year. |

Now lets substitute Cambell for Heyer in that statement, fivisth for third, QB for RT. Then the same statement again this time Devin Thomas for Heyer, WR for RT....... All statements of if and hope. The topic of O-Line this offseason has been probably the most popular on the Warpath. Why? Because the second half of the last season, the most glaring weakness was O-Line and this was due to the age and health. During the offseason there was alot of anticipation from the greatest fans in the world to see exactly how the FO would tackle the problem. Lots of suggestions were made at every position except LT. Draft Mack at C, Oher at RT, sign a proven player, etc. There were players availible. We did get an upgrade with Dockery, but bigger questions are still left along our biggest weakness the second half of last season. The FO chose to look at defense to spend money which is great, but the true need was overlooked. Now I think the words we need to use are not "if" and "hope" at this point, but "better". Because the D-Lines of Philly, Dallas and NY have not gotten worse. And Heyer better be ready to start at RT and Reinhardt better be ready to step in for Randy Thomas when goes out at some point during the season. Our line when healthy is very solid, but this is the NFL, injuries are apart of it and depth is a neccesary. So Mike Williams better knock that rust off and Bridges better be ready to fight in the trenches like he fights at bars because if not, it is going to be a longgggg season. I have the faith, but it is time step up. "If" the O-line steps up and plays together, guys we are a surprise team this year, and could be looking at lengthy playoff run. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
In today's NFL, QBS are expected to perform no matter how the O-line plays. You're never going to see an O-Line do what the Hogs did in 1991. (9 total sacks, 6 through the first fifteen games when all the starters played, etc, blah blah) We need Campbell to perform in spite of the pressure. Look at how badly Arizona's line played in the SB and they came this close to winning because they have a QB who let's it fly fearlessly and receivers who make it pay off. Defensive coordinators are going to bring as many people as it takes to get pressure. You have a great O-Line? They'll just bring more people than you can block. Receiver is the position that beats pressure nowadays.
So, I'm not content to wait until we have 5 HOFers up front before we contend. Campbell needs to get the ball out more quickly and Vinny's 2nd rounders need to hit home runs. Im tired of making excuses for people. "Oh the offense can't score because the defense doesn't give them the ball at the one yard line." Bullshit. My fear is that they want to shitcan Zorn (and Campbell naturally) after this season. I just hope they shitcan Vinny as well. He was back on the radio yesterday and boy does he still suck. Poor Frank Hanrahan. He must get migraines thinking about having to work with Cerrato for the next five months. Wow. I feel better now. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
So who on this site is still saying wait for the season to worry about the uncertainties on the line? Just checking.

Apparently Rinehart was supposed to be Steve Hutchinson his first day of minicamp last year, and signing Bridges was supposed to be akin to signing Anthony Munoz. |

If Rhinhart has NFL ability, this will make him game ready much more quickly than film study and limited practice reps. It would be huge for the OL depth if he turns into a viable option to start this season.

Our seasons are always contingent upon players who've never had any previous dominant football prowess stepping up and "getting it". It's not like these players are finding red mushrooms in the offseason that will make them twice their size and give them the ability to block the Dwight Freenys of the world. Reinhardt is young and will more than likely perform between 10-20% better or worse than he did last year. He couldn't even crack the lineup last year when we desperately needed lineman and were even letting people like Justin Geslinger play for us. Without steroids being involved name me a player who just "got it" and then became 80-100% more effective than he's ever played in his life. |

I don't think we have a good line. But I'd say middle of the pack. Dock is an upgrade (though Kendall would be a great coach because he is such a great technician) and Heyer is an upgrade over Jansen in the passing game but a detriment in the running game. Expect lots of run left this year and JC holding the ball forever with max protect schemes. |

not so sure about that, this offense is predicated on quick reads and getting the ball out fast. |

In short...the argument doesn't hold water beyond the AZ Cards. Looking at top offenses you tend to see one resounding theme: a top notch offensive line. Brady has typically had one in NE. Peyton in Indy. Mini-Manning in NY has one of the best lines in the game and can be very good when he's on (such as he was at Fed Ex field last year). And finally, the most impressive QB in the game today IMHO, Drew Brees, has a very good (though maybe a bit underrated) line in front of him. I think anyone who watches the game play by play, seeing things develop, can easily recognize many of Zorn's plays fell apart before JC or any of his targets could be in a position to make something happen because the o-line crumbled. Zorn has basically said so himself. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
Max protect was nonexistent in 2008, although Cooley did plenty of 'chip and and release', and goes against WCO philosophy. There's usually a deep route, a hot reciever, and a dumpoff at the very least in most of the passing plays in the playbook.

The Steelers offensive line wasn't exactly knocking on Canton's door last year either |
The Steelers offensive line wasn't exactly knocking on Canton's door last year either
Yeah but the defense was off the charts. Big Ben finds a way to get an extra second or second and a half when he needed it and they were still able to run enough. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
The Steelers offensive line wasn't exactly knocking on Canton's door last year either
They gave Big Ben enough time to pull off a glorious come from behind Super Bowl win in the final minutes of the game. Also their defense is capable of scoring on every defensive play. There are many reasons that they were better than us on both sides of the ball last year. That's not a fair comparison. If your team's defense can almost score more than its offense then by all means go into the NFL season without quality O linemen. I don't think our defense grants us that luxury though. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
I am starting to get a bad feeling about Thomas. He may be able to get through this year but he also may be done.

My point is that becuse our offensive line was so dominant in the 1980s, fans (of a certain age I suppose) think the only path to success is to have an offensive line that pitches shutouts. It's an unrealistic expectation. The QB has to pick his teammates up. The Cardinals are one example. I think Roethlisberger does a nice job of buying time. Ditto Romo, though he lacks consistency. It's the only thing McNabb does really well, IMO. As for the Pats, their offensive line is good but you can't tell me that Brady and the receivers aren't the straaw that really stirs that drink. As for Zorn, his devotion to the outmoded WCO will be his downfall. Campbell can't run it the way Hasselback did and if he wants to survive he needs to get over the notion that you can run the Redskins offense exactly like they did in Seattle. On the bright side, our defense may be good enough to carry us while they figure out how to score more than ten points. |

Last year the Giants started the same five lineman for 16 games each. The Redskins, on the other hand, lost 9 games due to injury on the OL. That's really not a lot, but the effect was exaggerated by three things: 1) all 9 games were lost at the same postion (OT), 2) when Heyer returned from injury the team opted not to place him back in the starting lineup which makes the practical games lost more like 13 or 14, and 3) the Redskins don't employ a replacement level left tackle other than Samuels, and to this day, still do not. Currently, the Redskins have only two guys on the roster who can handle the tackle position for an extended length of time, so more injuries at that position would be devistating. I think they can deal with another 9 adjusted games lost if they get 16 start seasons from Heyer and Samuels. But that's not necessarily in their control. |
Re: Catching Up With Pete Kendall; Could He Be Back?
My expectation of the O-line is not HOF, best line in NFL can only to win mentality...I think it was fairly obvious the second half of last season the O-Line sucked due to injury and the basic extremely poor play of reserves who came to fill in. Im not going to bash JC for the performance of the second half. The running game also fell off. My expectations of Heyer, if he is deemed the starter needs to play better, 3rd year in the league under a pretty good line coach.
I am starting to get a bad feeling about Thomas. He may be able to get through this year but he also may be done.
The guy is a warrior but at some point the body can't take it any more.
I've had that same bad feeling for a while now |

As for Zorn, his devotion to the outmoded WCO will be his downfall. Campbell can't run it the way Hasselback did and if he wants to survive he needs to get over the notion that you can run the Redskins offense exactly like they did in Seattle. On the bright side, our defense may be good enough to carry us while they figure out how to score more than ten points.
i gotta disagree with ya a bit on the first part. zorn installing and sticking to the wco is not the problem. he needs the right people to run it effectively. he has the backs, the receivers, the TEs and a few o-lineman. he just needs to add to the o-line and most importantly have the right qb to run it. JC might prove to be that guy, if so then the offense is only a few o-lineman away from having all the pieces in place. i agree with you on your comments about the defense. |
