How many of you have been diagnosed with ADHD

Just out of curiosity I was wondering how many of you have been diagnosed with ADD. I personally was diagnosed when I was 5. I got a hold of the report when I was 16 and one of my favorite parts explained how I insisted on telling the therapist about my nightmares instead of doing the activity he had laid out for me.

I like playing Connect 4. Did you ever see Blue Man Group? I stayed up until midnight last night. I hate crows. Why does Luigi take such a back seat to Mario? I came to win, battle me? That's a sin. Having surgery really sucks. I love to stuff a whole pack of big league chew or bubble tape in my mouth at once. Cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born there will never be another unicorn. Cheese is really good. Why do trucks make a beeping sound when they back up, but cars don't? Clicky pens are fun. Dodge. Dodge. Dodge. Head. Stomach stomach stomach stomach stomach stomach stomach stomach stomach stomach.

Anyone here have Tourette's Syndrome?

Re: How many of you have been diagnosed with ADHD

My sister was officially diagnosed and treated for ADHD when she was a kid. She was the typical hyper child but she was good at channeling all that energy into sports.

We both ended up participating in a study at NIH for kids with ADHD and their siblings. I only did like one or two interviews and they said that I probably have ADD but definitely not ADHD, I'm much too lazy for that.
I never got treated for it but I sort of wish that I had because I'd love to be able to focus more. One day at my old job I was sitting in a small meeting with my boss and 2 other co-workers going over some things and out of the corner of my eye I see this huge bird land on a branch just outside the window. Without regard for the meeting I blurt out "look at that hawk!" like it was nothing. Everyone gave me strange looks as I sort of shrugged and went back to whatever we were talking about. It's days like that where I wish I had some Ritalin.

I had ADD when I was young. My mother slapped me in the mouth a few times and I was cured, free of charge.

I'm not a doctor so this is just my opinion. I think all of these diseases and disorders are popping up so drug companies can sell psychiatric drugs. When I was young we didn't have all of these drugs on television. If we wanted a drug we'd roll it or pull a cork.

I think these drugs legitimately help some people. They are necessary and work. But I think there are a lot more people on them than really need them. The diagnosis becomes an excuse for poor behavior.

I know a girl who's son I can say really needs the drugs because he is all over the place all the time. With that said when I was in a custody battle they tried to say my daughter had ADHD and I could not fiigure out how they came up with that. The point they wanted to make is that I was a bad parent who did not pick up on this thus the mother was a better parent. Well after all was said and done the info they got from her mother was not the child that lived under my roof. So the only two things I could figure is either the mother lied or she was just a bad parent who had no control. These drugs they give kids is just crazy and studies show if you give these drugs to the best of kids it will still changes their behavor even if they where not needed. Personally I think alot of the problem stems back to the parents in alot of cases as they cannot control or do not take the time to work with their children. Its a plus for the school system as it makes life that much easier to have a bunch of druged up kids that are easier to take care of and the same goes for the parents. The drugs now take the place old discipline and the kids never learn how to deal with stuff in the real world. Whats going to be the effect on these kids as they grow up?

Doctors are way too quick to write a Rx these days when other forms of treatment and therapy would be more effective.

I've often wondered if I have ADD. I notice especially when I'm reading. Who else has this problem:

You'll be reading, but then your mind inadvertenly wanders and you discover you're thinking about other things while your eyes continue to follow the words. Then you snap out of it, and have to restart the sentence or paragraph. Anybody else experience that?

Sorry, would have responded sooner but had to reread the paragraph several times.

This especially happens if I'm reading off a computer screen, so I usually have to print out long work emails to be able to follow them more closely.

That used to happen to me all the damn time when I was a kid in school, even high school. Whenever I was reading something I was uninterested in, this happened.

Now as an adult I tend to read things I'm interested in - I like my job so even work-related stuff holds my attention. And now it doesn't happen so much. But still, I think it's totally normal.

ADD is much more severe, to the point where you often have trouble sitting through an entire movie, even if it's a movie most would agree is riveting.

Without getting into too much detail. I underwent some tests, because I had some symptoms that would warrant it, a couple of weeks ago for a brain tumor. And the neurologist was like "While we wait for the tests next week why don't you try these pills and see if you feel better?" And these were potent anti-psychotics he was prescribing, with some intense side effects. I was pretty surprised how cavalier he was prescribing such a strong medicine, especially when he wasn't even sure if it would help me. No tumor by the way.

a) Glad to hear no tumor.

b) After even a brief conversation with you, it's pretty obvious that "potent anti-psychotics" are really something you should take as part of your regular diet.

Actually for the most part it wasn't just because I was pretty confident that I didn't have anything serious (beyond Tourette's Syndrome, which is more embarrassing than anything else) but there was a brief moment when I thought "Uh oh, what if they find something?"

And I was a little nervous when I went to see my general doctor for what we both thought was going to be a nothing meeting "Doc, I've got these symptoms..." "Don't worry, you'll be fine." But that's not how it turned out. It was more "Doc, I've got these symptoms..." "You need to see a neurologist right away"

But yeah I did have that passing fear of "I can't believe I might actually have brain cancer (or something along those lines)" Not a good thought to have

Again, good to hear it's nothing serious.

Doctors make me nervous, period.

I was having heart palpitations earlier in the year. My Dr. sent me for all these tests, EKG, echocardiogram, stress test, etc. I was bugged out. Turns out everything was normal. Some blood pressure meds and losing 20lbs solved the problem. But for that time while I was waiting for the test results all I kept thinking was "man, do I have bad heart or something, WTF am I gonna do if these test results come back with bad news?"

Re: How many of you have been diagnosed with ADHD

I remember the first time a doctor made me real nervous. It was my first check up with my new DR. and it was also my first check up after turning 40. If you have had a check up after age 40 you know what I'm talking about. So I look at my new Dr. and he has hugh hands and it looks like he had broken his fingers 40 times as they where all swollen. I still walk funny.

No, never been diagnosed with ADHD or ADD.

What is ADD? Is that when you can't quiet your mind? It just keeps rambling? Sounds like a byproduct of the ever-growing ego within our society.

(if you've flamed me before for similar comments, best to just ignore this one and leave some flames for the others ;))

ADD is when a person has a problem concentrating and ADHD is the same but now thrown in hyperactivity.

I don't hold with psychotherapy. If a kid has excess energy they put him on amphetamines? Great. Certainly speed focuses the mind but it leads to mood disorders, sleep disorders, sexual disorders. Yeah Adderol!

Exactly. Well to an extent. Back in the day they were giving everyone ridilin(sp) for that, and it turned out to lead to suicide.

I went to the doc. when I was in grade school I was told I had ADHD and "I would not succeed" without meds. My dad refused the meds.

Fast forward, I ace high school, go to UVA, double major, working a nice job, etc. Not to brag, but the point being don't let people tell you NEED a medication to function. It is not always the case. Always get a second opinion before you start some serious meds, even if you trust your doctor. Also always consider safer alternatives. Hollistic, eastern medicine, even just sports. It may sound stupid but those things help a lot of the time. Also you won't kill your kidney and f up your brain.

Exactly. 70 Chip III is a complete spaz that can't sit still. He's also extremely intelligent, etc. etc. Fortunately the former Mrs. 70 Chip is willing to keep him constantly on the go with sports leagues and books. The real problem, IMO, is that parents are so absorbed in their own activities that they don't want to be bothered with dealing with their kids. He's one of these kids that will turn flips on the bed till midnight. I took him to play 45 holes of golf. He was begging for sleep.
