Let's talk some Orakpo
Seems like Rak was impressive, and I've read positive things about Jarmon as well.
I don't want to jump the gun here but we could really be set at DE for a long time with these guys if they pan out as expected. For those that watched the game fill me in on how these guys looked coming off the edge. |
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
From what I remember (fading in and out of sleep most of the game), both Rak and Jarmon were able to get decent pressure coming off the edge. Very good for their first taste of NFL action.

Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
Orakpo is going to terrorize QB's this season. As far as I could tell, he created pressure every time they rushed him. He would have gotten to Flacco on one particular play if not for a blatant hold.
|
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
Orakpo was held almost every time when he tried to rush the passer. He has a very quick first step and doesn't slow down. The only way to stop him was to hold him.
Jarmon looked alright, but not as good as Rak. Rak was was awesome for his first NFL Game. |
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
I think Theismann compared Orakpo to Ware last night. Of course, it is Theismann talking, so take it for what it's worth.

Orakpo is a beast, hopefully he sees plenty of time getting after the QB. I thought Jarmon played well, for a 3rd round pick next year...he could end up being a steal. The future looks much brighter for the DE position with these two guys on the roster. |

Imagine how good Orakpo will look when Albert Haynesworth is in their taking double teams

Ouch for opposing QBs. I think we're going to see a lot of holding calls in our favor too. |

orakpo did well rushing the passer, as did jarmon. not sure how rak will be at linebacker though

yeah this is something im wondering about to in regards to orakpo. we know he is physically impressive, positive remarks about how he studies the game so he could be decent at SAM but i wonder if his skill set is better suited at being a down lineman 3 snaps a series instead of just on 3rd down. - orakpo said in an interview that he excels at rushing the passer and really wasnt asked to do anything else in texas (LB and coverage is new to him) - given how blache (arguably but JT certainly thought so) misused JT last year in this similar role, i am alil hesitant to let blache try the same thing again with our star rookie -im not sure blache knows how to scheme an aggresive front four and really hope he doesnt ask them to stay conservative and eat up blockers again this year to try and let the LBs make plays. -last year qb pressure was a big problem, DS n Cerrato addressed that with AH and orakpo but maybe even with the right pieces (and AH is a huge talent addition) blache still cant get pressure on qb or is too old and stubborn to change his his conservative approach - on the flip side, theisman today said orakpo lacks the true size to take a defensive lineman pounding every snap im not totally sure how i feel, i know we need LB help but at the expense of experimenting with our star rookie and taking him from what he does best to a whole new position and responsibilities? im not sold on this yet but i will defer to blache and the coaches. go skins!! |
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
Can people tell me why Rak looked bad in coverage, because when I watched him, the TE had maybe a step on him in the endzone, but other than that, I thought he looked great. Also you got to keep in mind that Greg Blache is good at hiding players weaknesses and exploiting there strengths, so in the preseason he's not going to show what he's going to be doing all season. But if you want my full thoughts on Orakpo, he was always around the ball, HELD CONSTANTLY, and looks great as an OLB and a DE.
My next question is if you all think he looks too bad at OLB, should we sign Derrick Brooks, and move Rak to DE for the rest of this season? |
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
There was one play when Rak looked like he was in the backfield before the snap, despite not being offsides. Talk about explosiveness.

Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
Sam Huff called him Rakapo on the radio and seriously did not seem to know his name. I got a good laugh out of that. ORAKPO looked great and is so quick cant wait to see this D week after week...Anyone else every catch games on the radio? Michaels, Jergensen and Huff are good guys but just don't cut it when it comes to play by play. The ramble on and are kinda goofy. Im not a big fan but oh well..just some thoughts..

I just think of Sonny and Sam as having two uncles you really like watching the game in your living room next to you... not really as commentators. Larry is still the evil replacement for Frank Herzog so I just tune him out. :) |

I listened when I left a friends place during half time, when Sam disappeared for 3 minutes of game time during the start of the second half. I think Sonny said he went to the ATM? What the hell does he need to go to the ATM for during halftime? They do remind me of 2 old uncles, I feel like they might be drinking too. I never really followed Maryland, but wasn’t shawne merriman really only a DE in college that got converted to OLB in the pros. Can anyone draw any comparisons, besides physically? |

Merriman was a hybrid DE/OLB at Maryland, similar to Terrell Suggs in Baltimore (who also played DE in college at Arizona State). Both San Diego and Maryland run a similar 3-4 style defense, so there was very little transition for Merriman. Orakpo has the speed to cover TEs and RBs out of the backfield, his adjustment will be mental in learning to do the other tasks of a linebacker besides dropping the QB on his head. |
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
They Say Orakpo is not big enough to stand up to the run so they put him at LB so he dosen't become a 3rd down guy, his physical abilities demand that he's always on the field, by him playing LB this will also allow him to blitz from that slot and a safety will pick up the TE

Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
Brooks has always played on the weak side in a Tampa-2 scheme. I don't know that he would work on the strong side in our scheme.

I think the coaches will stick with Orakpo for the next couple of games and if him or Wilson don't look like they're up to the task, Marcus Washington could be brought back in. I wouldn't hold my breath though, they definitely want Orakpo on the field as much as possible. |
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
Orakpo looked great, he is a hell of a pass rusher and I think he played well as a LB. I think overall though, LB coverage was terrible (Fletch getting beat for that long gained earlier in the game, come on!) I'm also seeing a lot of dump off passes killing the middle of the field. I think the coaching staff needs to address this weakness.
I do hope that with a better pass rush this won't become an issue. Call me a Kool Aid drinker, but our d-line seemed unstoppable without AH, the Ravens got away with a lot of non-calls last night. AH will only make this better. |

lol you just won't let go hope of MW coming back. I think the chances at this point are slim to none. |
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
Rak looked awesome and Jarmon looked solid; we could definite be set for years to come barring any injuries/trades, etc
But with all of the strength that we have at DL coming up, we have questions at CB, kinda the opposite of where we have been for the past handful of years |

I think the chances at this point are slim to none.
So you're saying there's a chance? :) I'm just saying IF they brought someone else in, it would make more sense to bring in MW who played the SAM, then Brooks who played WILL. |
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
His closing speed is unreal. One play in particular stands out to me. The D was running a delayed Stunt and even before BO came around, The Baltimore QB started to run out of the pocket and BO closed on him like he was standing still. I also liked JJ but he seemed to winded after just a handful of plays. Could have been he was hyped up just to be on the field and ran his tank empty , or it could be he just isn't in very good shape. I guess we will see come Saturday. Another guy that seemed to be all over the place was Henson. He didn't have good technique on a few plays, but overall, I was impressed with a guy that many said was a wasted pick. He could be a valuable backup at LB

Can anyone draw any comparisons, besides physically?
Maybe that's code for "he had to go to the bathroom." Those guys ain't exactly spring chickens. I don't buy that Rak is too small to play every down DE, I think from Blache's comments it's more that he isn't that good at it yet. Plus they are short at OLB. Blache has always instilled a stop the run first/play your gap approach to his d-linemen & he probably wants more girth on the d-line for that, like DAniels. Carter isn't much difference in size than Rak & he's been an every down DE for us. Though as his run stopping has improved, his sack #s are down. Jarmon looked really good, nice burst & quick to disengage his blocker. I caught some of the replay last night in the 2nd half & saw him get in on a # of plays. He was of course going against scrubs on the o line, but if he can't beat those guys he doesn't have much of a chance at getting any pt. I agree w/someone's earlier post that said he looked winded at times. Especially on the last td play. |

Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
Both guys did very well. Very very impressed with Orakpo's explosiveness. He was constantly getting held.
|
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
'Rak' should stunt every play behind Albert. Pick the gap you want.
|
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
Orackpo looked good in his first preseason game. I wouldn't elect him into the Hall of Fame yet, but he shows great promise. It was hard to tell if he was in position while he was playing linebacker. When he lined up at defensive end, his pass rushing skills are obvious. He can best help the team if he can play strong side linebacker on early downs and rush the passer on third down. So far, I like what I see.
|
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
per matty's original post, that we could be set at DE for a while. That's hopefully the case, and the DT position looks stacked as well. Dixon is at least due for the practice squad if he plays like he did last week, and if he does go to the PS, somebody might snatch him up as DTs are always in demand. I don't know if they could keep 5 on the roster? That's counting Alexander as a DE.
Same for DE, somebody is gonna be cut that we would like to see on the team. Most likely Wynn and/or Buzbee. |
Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
I was thinking the same thing. How many DE's & DT's did we keep last year?
Also, <sigh> I think Chris Wilson's time with the club is limited. |

Re: Let's talk some Orakpo
I was very impressed with him. I'm gonna go ahead and jump the gun and say if he plays full time he'll be a top candidate for defensive rookie of the year, maybe even have a pro-bowl appearance.

he would have made an even bigger impact in the Ravens game if the Ravens linemen didn't HOLD ON EVERY PLAY! ... look at this one! |
