Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Preseason Week 2)
 

Definitely happy with the win, but still it's time to lay the smack down.

This week we have to start with...

[B]Jason Campbell[/B] The 1-10 is a bit misleading as one completion was actually called back due to a Samuels penalty, and he did attempt a couple of crazy deep passes...but still. Let's realize that his accuracy was off, his overall timing was off, and he didn't command the offense in any way that a top QB should. I'm not worried that we'll lose games because of him, but he needs to start showing on a regular basis that we'll win games because of him.

[B]Special Teams[/B] The fumble return was nice, but otherwise can't say I was too impressed with the ST coverage. This is the chance for guys like Henson, Holmes, Eddie Williams make their presence felt and emerge as a leader on special teams play. Special teams is about more than just the kicker, punter, and returners.

[B]D'Anthony Batiste[/B] I don't want to single him out because who knows if he even has a shot to make the team, but I really wasn't impressed with him today (or last week.

[B]All of you who quietly (and no so quietly) laughed behind by back as I touted the greatness that is Chase Daniel this summer[/B] Who's laughing now bitches?! :)...thought his pass to Eloi on I think 3rd down could have been a little better so Eloi could run with the ball but still, can't help but be happy with what Chase showed today. Still think he's most likely on our practice squad though.

How bout Jim Zorn on the first drive calling a timeout to kick a chip shot FG. This is preseason and it was a good time to go for a td on 4th down.

Campbell's got to complete that third and five pass to Fred Davis. Whether it's Davis' fault or not is irrelevant to me. They need each other.

But Campbell was 2/4 on "read" passes, and we've really got to find some receivers who can line up in the right damn spot. Maybe they called Samuels on that one for being off the line, but usually illegal formation is a receiver penalty and at this point it's completely inexcusable.

If you think you can tell anything that you didn't already know from four passes, you're likely insane, and I worry for you.

[B]Pass coverage[/B] It was a bad unit at the end of last year, and it's worse now. What gives? Why do we ever leave the middle of the field wide open on third down?

the skins running game- first team vs. first team. i thought the o- line did a nice job for Portis. and all of sudden, our defense looks fast as hell

JC: you are correct. I liked his decision making but his accuracy was off. We need to see better from him.

The special teams coverage units were bad in a scary way. Major fixes are required.

Batiste: he just hasn't cut it at all

Missouri Missile: I like how he made the qb derby much more interesting. I think he benefited from having his first read be open on a repeated basis. But, still, he was decisive, accurate, and ran the ball well. What other qb has led us to a td so far? I generally oppose putting qb's on the practice squad but Chase may be an exception that should be made.

Leaving aside Batiste, I feel much better about our o-line, and not just the first team, than I did a few weeks ago. If the qb's did not get it done, it's not because they didn't have protection.

I think the fg call was made because we need to test drive kickers. What got me about that was the wasted time out. We could have just kicked it.

[B]special teams coverage[/B] -- get real.

[B]pass coverage[/B] -- not as bad as ppl make it seem..... u have to expect the other nfl team to complete a few passes but it definitly can, and will get alot better.

[B]d-line[/B] -- crazy depth. they look real good.

[B]orakpo[/B] - seems to be getting better each game

[B]marko mitchell[/B] -- needs to make this team.

[B]portis/betts[/B] -- looked good. both.

[B]colt brennan[/B] -- i dunno.

[B]kelly/thomas[/B] -- have to keep getting better

[B]fred davis[/B] -- way to bounce back.

[B]J.campbell[/B] -- we'll see next game.

[B]zorn/blache[/B] -- play calling can get better.

Common sense says to keep Collins as backup QB, but I really like what I saw out of Daniels, Brennan looked good except for the INT. I would love to keep those 2 young QB's just in case Campbell is not resigned and take a chance with the unproven youngsters. I would hate to lose Daniels or Brennan to another team, it would be easier to get rid of the old man.

The field goal was because Zorn did not want a shut out. he should have tried at least one fade with Campbell, unless he has no confidence in him???

On the pass coverage, its simple piss poor coaching and planning.

It's not smack, but can we get props for AH. Man that front DLine looked fierce at first. I am really siked for the season.

Just keep Daniels on the practice squad. If JC doesn't make the playoffs this season he is gone(or should be). Collins is gone also either way of retirement or release. Daniels and Brennan show much promise.

teams suck and the depth DB position we're in is terrible. I mean, they had a decent WR corp, but we were playing a bunch of no name tweedle-dums at QB all night and it wasn't pretty.

the OL played pretty well up and down the depth chart though, which is a good sign.

DL was amazing (and yay on orakpo), though they were playing an OL that just isn't that good.

right now i'd go jason/todd/chase at QB, dorsey and the #4 rb, and mitchell as the #5 WR.


(and yeah, i finally got a day off... had to have hernia surgery to get it, but...).

Andre Carter is really going to benefit from AH. That deflected pass by Carter in the first quarter was all because of Haynesworth

He can be claimed by another team like Mason was, that's why I would rather get rid of Collins and take my chances. I know he could be claimed and cut but would really hate to lose him permanently.

let's not forget we're playing top flight defenses too. One quarter of work and less than 20 passes into the pre-season isn't enough to make me worry. We took low percentage shots twice and a couple screens looked like abortions. There's half his incompletions. The Fred Davis pass was probably Davis' fault but Tripp is right...that one has to work. The pass to Cooley was a nice little play. It's not like Campbell looked lost...he was slightly off accuracy wise but was victimized by circumstance a lot.

Damn, didn't know that. Well I guess we are screwed because even now he is the odd man out and we can't afford to lose a vet backup.

Actually he can't be claimed. It's not a waivers thing at all. He can be signed to a team's roster and then the team that has the player on their practice squad must either promote him to their active roster or he can go to the new team

Everyone pretty much said what are needed to be "smacked", regarding Campbell, I think it was just not his night tonight..

I want to add some positive signs;

1st group O-line: I'm surprised with their performance, I truly hope the trend will continue through out the season.. From what I have seen, Heyer did well..

D-line: Man, coaches will have difficult time to decide who makes on the list.. Although I think Wynn and Buzbee are pretty much out of the picture?

RBs: Dorsey and Mason have done well; Dorsey have more edge over Mason due to special team experiences.. If Dorsey continues to do well, we might see Rock get cut.. Although I'm still curious about Alridge, since he was signed to Denver when Shanahan was a coach and he has good history of finding RB gems..

Mitchell: Like I said in another thread; if he continues to excel in next two games, which I'm sure he will, then I would definitely have hard time to believe that he would not take the #5 spot..

Would love to see Mitchell go up the WR depth chart with Kelley. We need tall young wideouts badly. Moss and ARE are starting to show age a bit(based on last season).

Line of the night last night, I forgot who posted it though-sorry, was "Pineapple Judas!" after the interception. He's played rather crappily in comparison to his Preseason Hall of Fame performance last year.

My major complaint is with Zorn. I'd argue that of all of the sure fire starting QB in the league, the one who needs the most pre-season game reps is Campbell. Why are you treating him like he's Manning or Brady or Brees who just needs to make a couple of tosses in August and he's ready to go?!? I've been a JC supporter for the duration but it's time to see the finished product. I am firmly of the belief that 'preseason is meaningless' with the exception of building rhythm and timing. We've seen neither from our 1st string offense.

I would have played Campbell, Thomas, Kelly and Davis for at least a half last night and give them 3 quarters next week. Get Mitchell some time with the starters at WR against the Pats since we know that if there's anything our WR do consistently, it's miss time.
