Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Preseason Week 4)

First and foremost, glad to see we got out of the preseason without any major injuries.

I thought Colt stepped it up in his last opportunity, but his injury gave Chase a chance to get back in the game and put together an impressive drive. I would still give the nod to Colt and put Chase on the practice squad. But it's very close, in my opinion.

Anyway, time to lay the smack down

3rd Down Conversion I'm talking about the defense allowing something like 8 of 10 3rd down conversions by the Jaguars' offense. Not good

Anthony Alridge Ridiculous speed, absolutely sick. The way he turned on a dime on that last TD drive was quite the sight to see. But, his problem all summer has been holding onto the ball and what does he do? He fumbles the ball! leading to a touchdown. That's not a good sign. Especially when there's Dorsey who is plenty fast himself and hasn't been fumbling

Marcus Mason True, the opportunities weren't necessarily there. But when they were, to me it seemed like he was playing like a guy who either knew he was cut already or knew he was on the team. Not a guy on the bubble. Nice block on the Chase scramble though (the one that was negated by Marko's penalty)

This is driving me NUTS about the preseason. It feels like 2006 all over again. Sure, it's preseason, but we HAVE TO STOP getting people in third and a mile and letting them get it.

True the defense was not as i expected with our new additions. The Oline to me is a MAJOR concern.

Mason played himself off the team, 3 carries 1 yard? Ouch. Meanwhile Rock was solid with 5-17. Win.

How so...nothing from the first team OLine has made me nervous this pre-season. Other than health concerns I think they are OK.

No that was Aldridge...and it was impressive. Barry Sanders impressive. It showed how a speed back could help us. We need one big time.

I thought the first team oline play has been good. In my opinion, the reserves maybe a little better than last years, so depth is still a concern. Bridges and Reinhart has been inconsistent. Montgomery has been solid. M. Williams in a real game now would make me extremely nervous. Was really hoping for another young guy to emerge, nobody did. FO seems to keep saying "next year" to worry about this, but last year it bit us in the ass, and hopefully that will not happen again.

Easy on the Barry comparison's....lol.

It was Alridge, and was pretty awesome how quickly he could accelerate from a stop. The fumble sealed his fate, so hopefully they are taking a long look at Dorsey. Rock was his usually self, steady and unspectacular. I would still prefer using DThomas at KR, especially if Kelly wins the #2 WR spot.

Oh ok was that on a catch then? I was just looking at this rushing numbers and he only had 1 for -3.

Despite the fumble I think he still has a shot at sticking. That's something they can continue to work on with him.

Not comparing him in general..just that one play. Very Barry like. But I don't think he makes it either.

Yeah it was on the 2 minute drill Daniel ran and he caught the little hook route in stride and stopped dead on a dime and ran the opposite direction. Now granted the two jabronies who left most of their dignity on the field because of it were probably fodder and clearly not so fast but still it was fun to watch. Then he ran around the defense and down the sideline and out of bounds, No one ever touched him. HAHA.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mike Williams. He looked lost AND slow. Although most of the second string lineman looked like crap.

Actually I though against their second team he looked ok. The fact that he looked slow against their speed rushers didn't shock me considering it's the first time he's played in what 3-4 years?

I was watching the crappy internet feed for a while and saw big Mike W. getting absolutely toasted on a few plays. I saw a guy run by him like he was standing still. Can the coaches even justify giving a roster spot to this guy?

The problem with that is, if he ends up having to play at all this season, it's going to be against starting defensive ends. How do you think he'd look against DeMarcus Ware or Osi? I think there's a good chance Washington brings in another OT after this weekends roster cuts.

I never thought I'd say this, but I miss Jon Janson.

Tony Pashos may be set free tomorrow. While he struggled a bit last year, he was a starter a couple of years ago when the Jags had that sick running game. He could perhaps provide quality depth.

As well, the hour is late for folks like Levi Jones. Jones may now drop demands to start or to get a big paycheck just so that he has a job somewhere this year.

There should be some bodies available Saturday evening. Let's see if Vinny pounces.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Preseason Week 4)

Outside of a couple plays, I thought Henson looked really good. I do like HB, but I dont see him "taking over for" Fletcher. HB is better as a smart 2nd stringer that is able to play any LB position. Henson had several really nice tackles, although he did get his grill all busted up.

Sadly.....Williams is done. He might make the team but I dont see how this guy makes the final 53. Maybe ole' Buges is seeing something I dont, but he looks like he doesnt belong out there. Its hard for me to believe he is gonna provide any depth for the OL. For now I see us leaning on Montgomery, Rinehart, and Bridges.

Smoot, I think the Redskins will likely rethink the 5 running back thing and go with 4 again. Aldridge has terrific speed, but you are right, the fact he can't hold on to the football kills him. Mason's problem remains the same as it always has, he can't block or play specials, which for a 4th tailback, makes no roster sense.

Is it just me or does our run blocking suck a**? First team, second team and third team.

I know we are playing some good D's but even last night against Jacksonville our 1st team didn't run block well for that one series. I hope they pick it up and quick.

So they helped him lose weight... I don't see why that means they should be tied to him, especially for a vet min deal.

Let his ass go.

Once all the cuts hit the streets there's gotta be someone out there more qualified to be a backup OL. Williams hasn't shown anything at all.

Hold up a sec. The guy looked bad in passing situations, but lets remember this was his first game out and really looked unmovable in running situations. I'm actually a little excited about the prospects of him improving than thinking of cutting him. The sack that led to the fumble you could see that the lateral quickness wasn't there but thats something that can be improved.

The season starts in a nine days. It doesn't seem feasible to keep a project offensive tackle when there will likely be free agents that can step in and perform adequately, after Saturday's cuts. I don't see how anyone can be comfortable with having Mike Williams as the #3 offensive tackle.

It's not you, but at the same time, we didn't really run the way we will in the season. Meaning, How many left end sweeps behind Samuels Dockery and with Sellers leading the way did you see? I don't think I saw any.

I know it's a smack session, but I am so excited, and drinking so much Kool-aid it's not funny. I think JZ ran this preseason perfectly. We used it to test schemes, players, and backups against firsts. JZ never got caught up in the Fan trap of "playing to win the game". He, and his staff, put specific players in position to win and to step up. That's a good pre-season to me. Also, no key injuries (although is anyone else worried about Carlos) is a good thing.

Mike Williams has been a good story this year and he's busted his ass. We probably did more for him than Jenny Craig could have done but he is still a project. Unless they think he can be really good, and so far in the NFL he hasn't, I don't see any reason to keep him if we can get a FA who is better.

I agree. I think if we have an early rash of line injuries we are hurting, but I think MW has a very good upside if we continue the project into the middle of the season. I certainly don't "miss Jansen" - not trying to belittle Jansen, just glad that he is not on the team.

IF we got a Levi Jones, or an appreciable quality backup yes, but remember that the guys being cut now failed to make another team's 53. so any guy we get is either old (and maybe good) or a project.

Well like I said, unless they think he's going to be really good, and maybe they do. But he's going to need more games under his belt before he shows it. That means he can't let minor injuries stop him from playing when called upon. Buges seemed a little upset when he wasn't practicing because of his ankle, but I think he got the message.

Well said. It's exactly why I'm not worried about the running game or the defense. I think both were very vanilla and nothing close to what we will see once the season starts rolling.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Preseason Week 4)

M. Williams is a real dilemma. He's literally getting used to 1) playing again, and 2) his own body.

His body probably hasn't adjusted to the weight loss yet, his balance & coordination has to have changed some w/the loss. He's probably not as strong as he will be in mid season either. I would hate to see him in a game anytime soon, but maybe the coaches view him as a mid season project & are willing to take the chance. If he makes the 53, I don't see him dressing anytime soon.
