Shawn Merriman Arrested

For choking Tila Tequila of all people. If her song "I Love You" is to be believed Shawn Merriman is a dead man. Anyway this is the first time I'm glad to see that the Redskins drafted Carlos Rogers instead of Merriman. As far as the Chargers are concerned it's looking like drafting Larry English wasn't such a bad idea after all.

On a separate note I'm starting to get tired of seeing all these NFL players thinking it's ok to assault women. If this continues I think the NFL should consider handing out lifetime bands. The only problem with that though is what happens when a guy assaults another guy because at that point it can be looked at as a weird form of sexism.

At first I thought you were saying he was choking the tequila out of somebody. I'm as surprised he's dating her as I am about the charges. Tila Tequila......really? But yeah, these guys need to get a grip. No pun intended.

Just so you know, the 2nd article is not about the same Shawn Merriman, unless he is 46 years old.
If convicted of mail fraud, Merriman, 46, could face a maximum of 20 years in federal prison and a fine of as much as $250,000, as well as asset forfeiture and restitution.
Not much to say about the 1st article, I imagine he will be out for a good while if Goodell has anything to say on it. The question is when it will be ruled on.

After looking at her song, he may claim self defense (j/k)

I think one article said since it was his first offense?? Maybe criminal offense, but hasn't he been constantly in trouble with the NFL?

Apparently it might not be as simple we thought (never is). I keep on reading that apparently she was wasted and trying to drive home. Merriman tried to restrain her but she kept fighting him off. Ironically he might have just saved her butt however I guess we'll have to wait for all the facts to come in.

His ass is grass. There are some who still think Mike Vick got off rather lightly. Then you had this situation with Big Ben recently. On top of all of that Chris Brown just got five years probation for choking/hitting Rihanna.

I wouldn't be surprised to see every women's group come out of the woodwork to make sure Merriman doesn't see the field for a long time.

I guess they don't call him Lights Out for nothing.

Just wondering not saying he did it or didn't, but why when Big Ben was accused of rape everyone says he's innocent but when Merriman is accused you get the "his ass is grass" statement. Maybe what Dirtbag said is true. Don't jump to conclusion.

I understand your point, but there are two major differences.

1. In Ben's case, the complainant waited for a year to file a lawsuit
In Shawn's case, the complainant called the cops at the point of the incident.

2. No criminal charges were filed or pursued in Ben's case
Shawn was arrested by cops at the alleged scene.

does either of those rule out innocent until proven guilty, no, but they do leave different first impressions.

Anyway. Chris Brown'ing girls is really not the smartest move ever. Come on now, I thought these guys had learned that by now after that whole fiasco.

Obviously I'm guilty of that from my opening post but in all honesty I now feel that the second explanation is probably what happened, especially given Tila's reputation, and if thats the case Merriman should actually be commended. I've had times were I was way to passive when I knew that friends were going to attempt to drive under the influence. In fact last fall there was a guy that I didn't know very well but he was obviously tanked at a party that I was attending. Shortly afterwards he got in his truck, drove over a curve and almost got T-Boned by an oncoming car that promptly honked it's horn. Part of me thought it was kind of funny but at the same time I obviously had a grip on the situation and yet I didn't do anything to stop it.

Maybe he could have gone about it better but if the explanation holds up he actually did a good thing. I mean if there's anyone I'd expect to have problems with alcohol it's Tila Tequila, look at her "last" name.

As far as Big Ben goes, well I guess that Ben has a different reputation then Shawn Merriman. Publicly he's seen as the type of guy, outside of a motorcycle accident and a few drunk pics, thats more of a wholesome family type and it's hard to believe that a guy like him would actually sexually assault someone. The mans idea of rebellion is writing Jesus saves on his cleats during games. I mean I know he's not a saint but he's not exactly a huge party guy either.

Merriman on the other hand has a repuatation for living a fast and furious type lifestyle, I mean for God sakes up to this point he was going steady with Tila Tequila. On top of that his history with steroids pretty much sealed a conclusion in everyones mind that has been posting on ESPN, SI, and PFT. If you look at the comments you can't go far without a poster suggesting roid rage. I'd imagine if Mark McGwire was ever in a similar situation you would see the same line of commentary.

Just saw on ESPN that she had no evidence of being assaulted. Lets be serious Shawne Merriman is 270lbs. Tila Tequila is maybe 105 wet holding a brick. If she was choked by him you would see some evidence

Ever think that maybe Merriman is just a really big ninja :D Anyway I guess this ads credibility to the stopping her from driving drunk story.

Looks like everyone jumped the gun on this one. Well Merriman's decision-making in some areas (steroids, initially option out of surgery and risking grave injury) have been questionable, but I guess we shouldn't jump to conclusion. Well I hope he gets his name cleared up after this whole mess.

I don't think anyone has said the guy is a bad player. There's no doubt that he's a stellar LB. I think people are weighing his off the field problems to his talent as a player.

The dude is constantly getting caught drama which has to in some way, in turn, effect his team.

You know what affects his team? When he turns the corner and destroys the person with the ball. He is an animal and I think the people in this forum are a lot more worried about his off-field issues than the Chargers are.

Rae Carruth was convicted of premeditated murder. We don't even know the whole story on Merriman's incident (which seems to be a notch or two below murder at worst).

Who's logic is in question here?

Actually it was just conspiracy. Pre-meditated and he'd more than likely be on death row or serving a life term.

Either way beating on a chick isn't just a sweep it under the rug and keep on with your career type of incident.

If he didn't do it, he didn't do it and that's fine. And for the sake of keeping all things fair here, I never said he DID do anything or that he should be charged for anything. So you can step off your high horse as if you're the only person on this thread not calling for his head.

But I'm sure if it was your mother or sister he was accused of beating on, you wouldn't be as okay with him just going about his business as if nothing happened.

You are really all over the place with this. My mother and sister wouldn't be wasted and calling the cops on Merriman.

Says who? I mean how old is that chick really. 25 or something? Young and dumb, you get wasted and shit happens. Regardless of if she actually did get beat up or not, you can't say you wouldn't be angry and concerned at first. That's the whole point. Maybe it's because I'm a female, but I get the whole situation.

And if she was tanked out of her mind, why would the cops just go arrest him? If you have some drunk hostile chick and some guy trying to calm her down, the cops go arrest the dude? Police = Idiots.

And Rae Carruth had an off the field problem. Why not (if he wasn't so old when he gets released) put him back on the field? He was projected to have a pretty nice career before he screwed it up.

Well I am a male and I know that if a woman calls the police and claims that the man did something, they are going to take him in most of the time whether there is physical evidence or not. Look what happened to Kobe.

There needs to be consequences for these nutjobs that use the system to their advantage.

Here is what we all know about the incident. There was alcohol involved on both ends. TMZ confirmed that.

I'm a retired Deputy Sheriff in California so let me put some light on this situation. The San Diego County Sheriff's responded to his residence reguarding a possible battery and kidnapping. She stated to the Deputies that he chocked her and stopped her from leaving his residence. The Deputies saw no signs of phyiscal injuire to her , but she insisted and she made a citizens arrest from what i heard from a Department spokes person. Anyone can make a citzen arrests which forces a police officer to make an arrest. This puts the liablity on her if he is innocent because she made a citizen or private persons arrests. As a retired Deputy you have to advise people that when they make a citizens arrests they can be sued for false arrest. This case will not even get filed by the DA'S OFFICE due to lack of evidence but because he is a High Profile suspect it will get more attention.
He may get suspended by the league if anything and i doubt that if the case doesnt get filed. Any woman or man can call the police and file a criminal complaint that he or she assualted them.
