Sleeper: Redskins WR Corps

The more and more I thnk about our WR the most enthused I am. At first I was thinking that this positon was going to be weak again this year. But now as I look at the games over and over on DVR. I think we are on the verge of a very special receiving corps.

We have it all.

1. Blazing speed (Thomas & Moss)
2. Height (Mitchell, Kelly & Thomas)
3. We have elusiveness (Moss, Thomas, ARE)
4. We have experience (Moss & ARE)
5. We have good hands (Mitchell & Kelly)
6. Redzone threats (Mitchell & Kelly)
7. Trickery (ARE & Thomas) pass option and reverse - trick plays
8. Hunger (Mitchell, Thomas, Kelly)

* Mitchell and Kelly are not slow by any means either.

I think our WRs may turn out to be a lot better than expected "if" they stay on the same page with Jason Campbell.

I think Philly has a dangerous WR corps. Please chime in and write in your match ups and compare them to our depth chart at WR.

Re: Sleeper: Redskins WR corp

I'm also enthused. I'm a bit disappointed to hear that Devin Thomas has lacked focus at times during the preseason, but it's a huge deal that Zorn was comfortable enough with Kelly's improvement to announce him as the starting #2. That moves Randle-El into the slot where he belongs, where he's actually a matchup problem for defenses.

With Kelly, the fade route becomes a major threat in the red zone, meaning DBs have another part of the field they have to worry about. And the slant becomes a major threat on those 3rd and 6s, because Kelly can use that big frame to shield the ball from defenders.

The weakness for Kelly will be in route-running. I hope he's precise enough that Campbell can trust him fully. But overall I'm encouraged.

As a #4 WR, there's little pressure on Devin Thomas. He has the talent to make big plays, hopefully he can add a long bomb TD here and there throughout the season. Anything Marko adds is gravy.

That big target on the outside in Kelly is very intriguing. If he does well, I can see Campbell passing for 3800 yards and 22+ TDs. Key to all of that is the pass protection. That needs to hold. But I no longer expect WR to be a trouble spot for us. It's all on the line in my mind now.

I can't wait until Sunday. I think we will be much improved. I definitely see us scoring more points. All of our receivers are capable of making plays. Plus Cooley & Davis. "IF" this offensive line holds up our O could be dangerous. I definitely see 20+ TDs from Campbell. I would even go as high as 4000 yards passing max. As a result. I see Portis getting like 1500+ yards. If everything clicks and JC gets in a rhythm. Skies the limit. But these are "IFs". Sunday can't come fast enough. :Smoker:

I definitely feel like Campbell could break the passing yards record or the TD record this season.

Our WR corp might look good, but don't you think we should wait until maybe midseason or later to determine if we have good WR corp?

Sure, Kelly looks like he's going to be great WR but once again, it all depends on his knees.. Thomas, he obviously has the talents but "lack of focus" appears to be the problem, which was something he should have fixed a while ago.. During the off season, it looked like he finally got but then until the preseason, he fell behind Kelly.. This does not sound good, at all.. But once again, I will wait until later late in the season to determine..

However Mitchell might be different story; he looks like he's going to be a gem, if he continues to flourish then you can talk about him all you want..

Our WR corps has been so pathetic the last few years Marko Mitchell alone makes us better and gives me hope. The fact that MK has made enough progress that Zorn has made him #2 and JC is constantly singing his praises is the best news I've heard on the offensive side of the ball in years. To say I'm optimistic would be a huge understatement.

I agree Mitchell will end up being our "Colston", but as far as Thomas is concerned, IDK if he's going to be effective for us. I just don't trust Big 10 WR'S. Overall we will score more points as a team just because we have more talent this yr!!! I can't wait for sunday

I'm seriously pumped about these guys. Kelly and Thomas both looked light years ahead of where they were last year -- to me anyway.

I'd actually like to see us pass it about 60% of the time. Start out throwing, get us some quick scores, then use the running game to pound the defense into submission to close things out. Above all, be aggressive and attack downfield. Hopefully the O-line will allow us to do that.

That's key. We've changed some blocking schemes this year and should be better against the blitz. If our o-line guys can stay healthy, Samuels most importantly, the skies the limit. Call me homer or whatever, I believe this team is capable of doing some very good things.

Man I wish people would let that go. He's been thru the toughest part of what his knee will have to endure on a weekly basis, two a days. Unless he suffers a knee INJURY, which you can't prevent, quit bringing it up every time his name is part of a discussion. [/rant]

Back to the OT, I've felt since OTA's that we've got the best receiving group in the division. Mitchell only added to that. I truly hope Zorn becomes Andy Reid 2.0 by using the pass to set up the run. If that's the case, that takes pressure off of the OL by not putting them in obvious passing or predictable running situations.

I agree Pain. Passing will keep the "D" from crowding the line and that will only help the run to be even better. It's how the WCO works. It's looks like we finally have what it takes to get this offense off the ground.

That is why I am a skeptic til I see results on the field anymore. I forget the thread I posted on last night, but I said we have looked like the superior team against most of our divisional rivals or at least we were evenly gunned with them only to be on the losing end of the stick at the final gun for the past several seasons. We should have at least had 2-3 seasons of sweeping the Boys and Gmen since Gibbs came back, just going by our roster. I think it is great we might have actually assembled a great WR Corp that will be a big threat, but we can't forget our aged O line. Also I still am concerned with our secondary and the depth there. Actually depth all around might be a problem. I am very excited about the Giants game. If we beat them convincingly, it will set the tone for the whole season. IF we lose it won't mean much, but it might bring us back to earth a bit with regards to our expectations. Thing is with this revolving carousel of new coaches/players in the Snyder era, the fans have had many reasons to be excited, only to witness mediocrity in the end.

Re: Sleeper: Redskins WR Corps

I think if we can be consistent and make some plays on offense we can go as far as winning the NFC East. I say this because of some problems I see in other teams beside ours. Two major factors that made the NFC Beast so intriguing was the fact that we had two major WR superstars. T.O. and Plax. Now they are gone. Who are the big play receivers left in our division?

Redskins: Moss (hopefully the younger WRs step up).

Cowboys: Williams has yet to prove himself and he is not a rookie anymore by far.

Philly: Fraction Jackson is only in his second year and Macklin might develop into a decent receiver along with Kevin Curtis.

Giants: Nicks May be the answer for Plax. But that's a tall order to fill. Literally.

IF just two of these players make some plays this year we will be fine.

Thomas, Kelly, Mitchell, Fred Davis

We will easily be ranked high in the NFC East.

Dallas has a running game. But receiving corp is suspect. Defense is solid but soft in the secondary.

Giants have a running game. But receiving corp is suspect. Defense is solid but soft in the secondary.

Philly has versatile backs and speedy receivers. If Vick is utilized appropriately they will be extremely dynamic on offense. Espeically if Macklin comes to play this year. Defense. Suspect. Brian Dawkins/JJ gone.

Skins have a running game. Receiving corps is upgraded. Outsiders may say its suspect. Defense is solid LB experiments will have to be factored in as well as O-Line play on offense.

I think our QB/WR play could be the difference between us being 3-4 or 1-2 in our division.

NO. BAD. WRONG.

Crap happens and the Skins are down by six points with 1:43 left in the fourth. Do you really want "Andy Reid 2.0" calling the shots?

Interesting to see all this excitement, when just a few months (even weeks) ago people were calling for Stan Hixon's head for not developing any young WR talent, and claiming that VC totally blew it by drafting these guys who didn't put up the numbers DeSean Jackson and Eddie Royal did last year.

For the record I agreed with the idea of picking two wideouts -- but was really disappointed that Devin Thomas couldn't get his ass in gear and prove that he belonged on the field when other rookies have done it in the past. Whether that was Hixon's fault, I don't know.

I'm cautiously optimistic about what I saw from Thomas and Kelly in preseason, and it looks like they might be just what the doctor ordered. We'll see if that continues when the games are for real.

But I don't think it's hypocritical for one to criticize the complete lack of performance from Thomas or Davis and then praise them when they do start to perform. That's just the way things are in Sports-Fan World.

Re: Sleeper: Redskins WR corp

This is going to be a good year. For some reason I have alot of faith this year. Different from the last few. I think it may have something to do with Zorn, the way it seems our draft picks have been successful (by this I mean not only early round but also the late round gems), and how well I think JC can play.

When you think that for the last 4 years the only players you really had to worry about on our O is Moss, Portis, Colley. Now that it seems we have some playmakers on that side of the ball. Getting those young guys in early along while bringing ARE along in the slot, should really take some of the pressure off the running game which in turn benefits Portis being able to get some good looks when he does get the ball, double teams might not be so prevelant with Moss, and Cooley can continue to roast LBs.

That brings us to the Defense. They should be dominant once again. We could win the division this year. Then who knows?

Re: Sleeper: Redskins WR corp

I think that the skins will be just fine this year. I really like the idea of our DT and DE's getting more sacks, which causes more turnovers and more punts. That equals many more chances for our offense than last year. And if our O Line can just keep JC on his feet, say, 25% more than last year, hes gonna be a definite top 10 QB this year. Overall, I think our defense will cut the PPG of opposing teams by at least 4 points a game. Our offense should increase PPG by 5.5 to 6. That is a nice swing compared to last year, and with a season under their belt, shoot, sky is the limit.

Dont u like flying under the radar tho? Then all the naysayers jump on board...... act like they aren't suprised. I can just see it this year when we make it to 4-0 or 5-1. "THEY HAVENT PLAYED ANYBODY, BLAH BLAH BLAH....."

In 1990 the Giants won 13 games and the Super Bowl. The 49ers went 14-2. The Bills were in their Super Bowl run heyday. Therefore at the start of the 1991 season the prognosticators were all about those three teams, not us. We weren't getting much love.

Watch the "America's Game" episode on the '91 season. Several players talk about being under the radar. They even show a contemporaneous interview in which Rypien is asked about how the team could have gone under the radar for so long.

You and I must have heard different things. Chris Collinsworth predicted we would win the Super Bowl on Inside the NFL. I had one of those preseason magazines at the time (can't remember which one) which said we'd be in the running for a championship.

In 1990 we were a game away from the NFC Championship -- we had a veteran team with a future HOF head coach, and the Giants were aging and without Bill Parcells. Yes, the Bills were obviously getting some well deserved hype. Ditto the 49ers who were in the midst of a dynasty.

Either way, it just isn't true that "NO ONE" was talking about us.

Re: Sleeper: Redskins WR corp

I see us easily going 10-6 this season. Honestly. I think the most tricky games to pick are the games vs the Eagles. Our O-Line is old but crafty. Our backups are decent. But I would hope all the backups wouldn't have to start at once. Back up duty mainly. Another thing is that we are startng off the season realtively healthy besides Carlos.

D should be fine. I hope D. Hall has a good season.

I think we really might be a extremely under-rated team.
