Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I'm all for it. I say let's put him back there for the majority of punt returns. He's the most dangerous PR on our team and one of the best in the league if given the opportunity. The object is to win the game, so let's throw it all out there. Our offense was one of the worst in the NFL last year. What do we have to lose?
Thoughts? |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
then he pulls his hammy, and is half speed the rest of the season. brilliant. if we make it to the playoffs, that's a different story. and your going to get yelled at. this was discussed in another thread
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Not worth the risk. Put him back there in big situations but definitely not full time.

Agreed. He can spark us when we need him to but not full time. We need him full speed and injury free. |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Part time yes, full time no way. Moss is our only true threat at WR. With Malcolm Kelly now our #2, (also susceptible to frequent injury), we can't afford to lose Moss. We all know he gets nicked up throughout the year without returning punts. I say put Devin Thomas back there and see what he can do. He's the best option right now in that he's #4 on the depth chart (soon #5 once Marko fully emerges) so he'll see less action on offense than the other 3.
Here's another idea...alternate D Hall and Moss on punt returns...both are speedsters and both have experience back there....just kidding. I'm just glad football is back!! HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!! |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Personally I'd like to see what Devin Thomas can do returning punts.
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I agree...put Devin back there, especially since he may be feeling a little left out since Malcom jumped over him to take the #2 spot.
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
We could trade Portis and a 1st rounder for Devin Hester
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I think this is a good idea. I don't think the likelihood of Moss getting injured goes up by much for returning 5 punts a game and if he can return a few, then it will probably get us another win or two with our defense.
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
It would be fun to have him back there, but it would be a big risk. Maybe if Kelly starts killing it at wr and Devin or Mitchell steps up, we can afford to throw Tana back there. The Lions would have been 1-15 last year if not for his return.
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Put him back there. He's not exactly a spring chicken anymore, so why not get the most out of him? If he gets hurt then we activate Marko Mitchell. Santana will not have to worry about dropping passes and punching people with helmets on returning punts. If he's not there when we make the play offs, then he'll not be there to give up on plays.
My thought are this: we're not a stellar team or a play-off team, so why not try to be? We've depth at WR so why not? How about making the play-offs, not sneaking our way in? If he gets hurt eff it. No team should be dependant on one or two guys, IE Moss and CP. |

Thoughts?[/quote] Risk vs. reward. Maybe we'll be able to get RE to start running N-S as opposed to E-W. Our passing game is suspect at best, Moss gets hurt and it's null and void. Think long and hard about what you're suggesting. |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Devin should be the full time guy and maybe mix Moss in once in a long while. I don't understand why ARL still gets the duty. I mean Devin's biggest problem as a WR is route running and creating space, but once the pigskin is in his hand's dude has mad skills and runs really hard. Basically I'm just perplexed Zorn isn't doing everything he can to get Devin more opportunities...we know what ARL can do.

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I thought this was a thread saying Moss was the actual PR for us. Misleading thread title!
Moss is NOT a wise decision for PR duty cause he is too valuable to us as a WR and he is always someone that tweeks something. No doubt he would get hurt too quickly if he did that. I certainly agree that ARE should be benched for his pathetic PR "skills", and I'm all for putting just about anyone in there other than ARE. |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
The only thing I like about RE as a punt returner is, he will catch the ball. I don't have to hold my breath wondering whether or not he's going to catch it.
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Spot duty only. don't want to lose Moss's ability as a WR due to an injury from returning punts all the time.
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I knew I'd hear the risk vs reward thing. So the scenario is he's plays all year at WR, w/ no punt return duties and we're one of the worst scoring offenses in the NFL. Hmmm...sounds alot like 2008.
We've got a little more depth at WR, put him in there at PR a couple times a game. Nothing to lose, play to win. A player can get hurt at any time. Hey, I get the injury thing. He's our best wideout, but let's face it guys, we've got to put some points out and I think that would be a major plus. |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
If the other WR's step up then it's a posibility.

I would rather see him scoring more TD's as a WR with our other receiver's drawing coverage off of him. |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Did coaches ever give Thomas a look at as punt returner?
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
If Moss is back their returning Punt's then that means we are not winning.

The ability to catch the ball should be an afterthought for any starting NFL punt returner. I refuse to give him props for that. I don't think there is any team in the NFL with a true #1 receiver returning punts full time. There's a reason for that. I mean, I guess Hester is the Bears #1 wideout, but he hasn't come close to establishing himself as a receiver in this league. Santana is explosive back there for sure, but the cost to our receiving game is too high a price to pay. His hammy gets hurt enough as it is without him trying to play full time special teams. I wonder how Mason would do returning punts. He's got some burst. |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I would not put Moss in as a punt returner unless we needed a big return for the game winning driving. He is much to valuable to take the risk on him being injuried for Punt Return duty. Situational spot duty maybe not full time. If ARE can't do better early in the season than maybe they should give Devon Thomas a look. He has nice RAC skills. A Punt Returner needs to be fearless and secure the ball. Returning Kicks is much different than returning Punts.
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
No way...as fragile as those hammys are! Put Devin Thomas back there. I thought they were going to use Aldridge as the return guy. His speed and shiftyness reminded me of Devin Hester a little. I thought that is why we brought him in camp from Denver.
|
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I think we have a consensus:
1. Devin Thomas for primary PR. 2. Santana for spot duty as PR. 3. We'll all throw up if ARE is the PR. It's settled, then. Somebody notify Zorn. |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
We can't afford losing Moss to a stupid injury. Put him back there for key situations, and thats it. I agree that Thomas should be back there just to see what he can do.

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I'm bringing this thread back to life since we are desperate to score points. Anyone changed their minds? ARE needs to be out and SM needs to get the PR's that have a change of being returned. We need some points.

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Yeah why not.
But you know with our luck he'll break a big return, pull his hammy, get tackled at the one yard line, and fumble. That would just be so typical. |
Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
The last couple of games I have been paying attention to our punt returns and I think our biggest problem is blocking. I watch the other team just run right down the field and our guys hardly so them down. When El catches the ball he has someone right infront of him almost everytime and if he makes that persom miss he then has 3 other guys in his face. If you look the few times Moss has been back there this year he has not done much.
