Stern headed to satellite radio

This is a good move for both Stern and Sirius. It gets the FCC off of Stern's back (and a $500 million contract) and a bigtime personality onto the Sirius lineup.
|
i'd love 100$mill a year... holy crap thats too much money to give anyone...
|
Stern will regret this move.
Sirrius radio is the weaker of the two main competitors, Stern alone isn't enough for most people to pay the subscription fee to or change providers. I think satallite radio is the future, but I think the future will be a ways away. You never know, it will be interesting to watch. It's not like Stern's average listener does anything but live in a box and tune in with a ham radio. |
stern will be rich and not care... he could buy himself his own station after this...

They only have 600K subscribers, a small % of what Stern has now. That is major bucks for them to shell out in the hopes that he can drag significant numbers of them to Sirius as subscribers so they can keep getting their morning "fix" of Stern. If it pays off everyone wins bigtime. If it doesn't, Stern STILL laughs all the way to the bank. And he does not have to put up with FCC and his employer breathing down his neck over what he says. Good move for Stern. Tiem will tell for Sirius. |
I love satellite radio and definitely believe that it has a bright future. I subscribe to XM and love it. I thought about Sirius, but there hardware options weren't as good in my mind as XM's were. XM is soon gonna roll out a streaming internet subscription service which is what I've really wanted all along.
I do think that once the new subscriptions numbers start to plateau, the providers are gonna have to back off their 'no commercials' promise. |
I think this is a smart move to avoid the fcc by stern but how the heck in the world were they able to brooker(sp?) a $500 million/5 yr deal for a freakin' radio show?!?!?! Sterns gotta be laughin his ass off about not only getting away from the scrutiny of the FCC but also for getting bucks out the ying yang for talking about midgets and lesbians. That's pretty depressing.

It's a 5 year, $100 million contract....$20 million a year not $100 million a year. |

I'm not so sure about that. There sure are a lot of articles out there saying the same thing this one does - $500 million. And that includes Seattle Times one hour ago. |

Right out of your Seattle Times.... "Sirius, the No. 2 of orbital radio companies, announced yesterday that it had lured the nation's most popular morning jock to an exclusive, $500 million, five-year deal." Where does it say a $100 million per year? Seattle Times |
Sorry I did read it wrong...damn that just seemed like way to much...my bad...it's too damn early

I'd be willing to bet the number of subscribers to Sirius will at least double by the time Stern hits the air.
I can't justify paying $13 a month or whatever it is just to listen to Stern, especially since I only have a 20-25 minute commute to work. My morning ride won't be the same. I like to flip back and forth between Stern and Mike & Mike but they take so many damn commerical breaks. |
Matty,
what channel is mike & mike on? |
Stern's listeners number around 10 million. And according to the demographic reports, many are affluent -- not the deadbeats you'd expect. But think about this, if Sirius is able to pull only 1/10 of his listeners, that's $13 million *A MONTH*, not including the start up fee and the cost of the receiver itself.
I just wonder how long it will be before some right-wing, fundamentalist bible thumpers start calling for legislation to allow the FCC to have regulatory control over satellite radio. |
I think they'll be SOL. I don't remember who it was, but someone tried to regulate HBO, Showtime, etc. That got tossed out fast, I think Satallite radio is safe - for now. Until it becomes as common as cable-tv type channels, it will be fine.

I don't think that legislation should be levied against Satellite Radio. I think this because its a closed loop system. The only way you can listen to it is by buying the equipment AND subscribing to the service. Unlike our trusty dusty AM/FM, satellite radio cannot be heard by anyone who simply has the means to pick the signal out of the air. People must jump through some hoops before obtaining the signal. |
technically you can make your own receiver and pirate it freely... that's not legit though...
|
Matty,
what channel is mike & mike on?
AM 1300, ESPN radio 980 is FOX and has Jim Rome at noon |
Cpayne: You have to jump through hoops to get cable television, but that's still restricted. Granted they have more freedom than network TV, they're still regulated.

Sorry, I don't know much about cable TV regulations. But, compare the Playboy channel to Satellite radio. Same type of deal. Kinda funny that you still want to argue with me even though we agree on the topic. |

Not likely that an average Joe could go in and crack their security scheme, though. It would still be illegal to do that anyway. |
I like it already! I can get Stern and listen to NFL games.
|
I think at first it will be comparable to the playboy channel, but once it becomes so popular nearly everyone has it I think it'll be comparable to Comedy Central, etc.
