In the end it's a nice award to put on the mantle, but that's really about it. It's fodder for morons to argue whether or not he's done a nice job so far.

I'd rather focus on results.

The interesting thing is he won the award based on what he has strived for (nuclear non proliferation, multi-lateralism open dialog, etc). Those things are very difficult to measure.

Some would argue Obama has done quite a bit in change the atmosphere and perception of world politics compared to the last guy, but some would also say there have been no tangible results. It's an interesting argument.

I think EU president said that the prize is great, but it is also signal of responsibility. Obama needs to continue with his work and get results. I would agree with that.

Speaking of NP winner Al Gore, at least he was actually VP and made a movie to "earn" his award.

The nomination deadline was Feb 1...about [B]10 days into the Obama Presidency[/B].

That right there tells you how much of a joke the Nobel has become. It's so far away from when it was awarded to men like Albert Einstein.

Alfred Nobel would be ashamed to know how his name has been made into such a farce.

This is like giving the Heisman Trophy to a kid who's still playing High School ball. Sure, he COULD earn it someday, but he hasn't stepped on the college field yet.

It's so ridiculous I can't even be mad about it...nothing but laughs are appropriate.

Not to nitpick but Einstein won the "Nobel Prize in Physics" which is different than the Nobel Peace Prize. I agree about the nomination thing, but I am sure some will argue his goodwill alone, change from the previous administration(multi lateral approach, etc), etc. has had a significant impact on the environment in international politics.

I don't really care about the Nobel Peace Prize, but just noting that. The Nobel Prize in Economics is coming out on Monday, that's the one I really care about(econ major).

Why would someone be mad because someone won an award? Maybe if you were up for the same award or something like that I could under stand but getting mad just because you don't agree with that person does not make much sense. I think people will say that he has not earned the award but I really don't think they are made over it.

Al Gore last time, Obama this time. I get maybe a Nobel science award for Gore and a congratulations award for Obama, but isnt throwing this award at people who promote themselves and do little to make strides in initiating peace kind of insulting to people who have actually made a much greater impact on peace and people’s lives during the year. Is there any substance to this award anymore, or is it just the whos in vogue right now?

I that right? I wonder when it's meaning and significance declined? I mean I look at the [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nobel_Peace_Prize_laureates"]list of past winners[/URL], and yeah there are some questionable winners but not enough to render the entire award meaningless and insignificant. BTW, I don't think Obama deserves it.

No , Iran , Venezuala , Cuba , Russia , N. Korea .... we are just setting up a secret base on moon far Darth Vader to destroy our enemies :) . The NPP is political for the most part , i,e ; had Presdent Obama's campaigns focus been on destroying radical Islam , N. Korea ect . he would not have received the award , fair or not . I think J. Carter received his NPP 25 years after his " work " , only after he " condemmed " the Iraq war. Congrads to our President .

Thanks for the list Saden, seems a sad list though, 108 years, we have been awarding it for striving for peace. How many were for awarded for Mid East efforts or world peace organizations. Yet we still have blood shed daily, both on the streets of our country and throughout the world. If Pres Obama is recognized for "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." that is all good. But lets face it, peace in this world is as elusive as the holy grail ever was.

While there have been MANY revered and deserving recipients. When the world's most famous terrorist won the Peace Prize, irrepairable damage was done, IMO. AND I am not surprised you do not support it.

I'm not sure what you're advocating. That Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. King shouldn't strive for peace? Or that Aung San Suu Kyi and Nelson Mandela aren't deserving of recognition? Peace might be elusive but it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Very true . Many people get the Noble Peace Prize because they will not fight for those who cannot fight for themselves , therefore leaving many to be ruled be evil dictators / warlords . I do not like war , just saying ..
