Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
Does anyone have any information on Sherman Lewis's reputation as a play caller?
One of the last questions during Zorn's press conference today was that Lewis has a bad terrible reputation as a play caller. I'm so excited that he is our new play caller. |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
Yea he's about 95 yrs old and has no chance in hell at making this offense better..

He'll fit in perfectly! |

Exactly, in the Vinny/Danny Boy FO world, this was the ONLY move availible. |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
Yeah...what the hell happened to "He'll just be an extra set of eyes"???
Not that I believed that, but that was the story that was told to Skins fans that we were supposed to drink up and believe. Now he is coaching during the game? Everyone on this board and in the media said that Sherman was going to be the transistion to a new coach. Why doesn't the front office just say Sherman is going to be the transitional intrum coach, Zorn obviously doesn't mind. I don't believe any press release that comes from this front office. I don't know why anyone would give them credibility. |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
Here is a transcript of the last time Sherm Lewis called plays: "...G-67, G-67. B-3, B-3. I-31, I-31. Oh wait, it looks like Gladys in the back may be our big winner!"
Maybe he wasn't calling plays per se. |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
From bingo caller to playcaller in 2 weeks, amazing.
|
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
For a front office so supposedly concerned about how they appear, they really seem to have lost any sense of public perception on this one.
Do they realize that Al Michaels, Jon Gruden & Jaws, as well as the espn studio, will be talking about this for the good part of 5 hours on national tv next monday night? Could they have picked a time that would get more publicity? I don't think so. It's like a call for help to the football gods!!! |

Hey, that's kind of like QB coach to NFL head coach in 2 weeks. Dan should really consider a "bachelor" or "apprentice" style reality show, where people compete for the job of Redskins QB and/or head coach. |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
Id rather playcalling go to the other Sherman. He has no experience either, but atleast he's more familar with the offense. The main thing (other than just plain sucking at pretty much everything he was hired to do) is Zorn was being pulled in too many directions.

Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
I know his reputation. He comes in from Bingo, gets paid to make this team into a well polished turd, and then he laughes his old ass back home at the end of the season, if then. Synder is a effing sucker. If I could only get to him. I've got some land in Florida . . . .

Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
Lmao we might set the low scoring record in one season.. What a joke

Most likely becaue fans believe that will be the ultimate F-U to Snyder. However, there will be alot of folks that will say that it's all because Stub-Hub buys tickets from the Redskins while buying from the other 31 teams at the same time. When many of those seats would've belonged to a person cheering for the Redskins but they sold their ticket to show how much they can show Danny how angry they are. Or maybe it was sold to an Eagle fan that was was willing to pay top dollar for the ticket. Or maybe I'm wrong, then again there were so many proud fans at the game Sunday weren't they ? I hope that the boycotters keep it up, only to complain for the rest of the week that the stadium was empty. |

A full page of replies and not a single serious response that adds anything about the guy's history as a play caller.
lets keep digging. |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
I heard he will fight his guts out making tough plays/calls.

Yep, the last call he made was "B-27". |

Perfect, I forgot about that brilliant Vinny move. Vinny is the best...."Danny, I gotta idea, Dock has a roomate, 450+ lbs, from a sorry ass Buffalo team, 3-4 years ago last played...." After that, Vinny gets on Redskins Live at 6:00 and tells the fans that our draft stratgy has changed do to this signing(that allowed us to draft 2 linebackers who will never see the field). |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
From what I gathered he is a Mike Holmgren guy and Mike always called the plays.

lets keep digging.
He's been out of football for 5 years and he's 67 years old. I think that pretty much sums it. But, if you want some more insight, according to Jason Reid:
But Lewis, 67, was not well regarded as a play-caller. In fact, in 1999, the only year during which Lewis served as a primary play-caller for the Green Bay Packers, the team went 8-8, and Lewis performed poorly in the role, league sources said.
|
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
He knows the WCO very well, he coached RB, WR and was offensive coordinator for Holmgren. All my years living here in San Francisco and watching him move up the coaching ladder, the guy paid his dues and was highly regarded by Bill Walsh and Holmgren. My concern is he's 5 years out of the game.
A full page of replies and not a single serious response that adds anything about the guy's history as a play caller.
lets keep digging.
Was the play caller for 7 years in Green Bay, Offense almost always finished in the top 6. Granted he had a smart play caller in Holmgren supporting him (doesn't have that here it seems). Didn't have quite the same success in Minnesota or Detroit. But look, I don't want to veer this conversation too far off course but this guy was one of the most respected football minds in the league and he could have been a coach somewhere but the cold, hard truth is there was no Rooney Rule in place for him. As for his age being a factor, tell that to Dan Henning. |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
Playcalling might be better, but it all boils down to execution. Zorn might not be a good play caller, but still the players should be able to execute them no matter what is called.

Yes. We should execute everyone who plays offense, to steal a line from John McKay. |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
This is what happened with Zorn as a play caller:
In Zorns first 6 to 8 games he called plays so bad that it totaly caught the other teams off guard and scratching their heads. Finally the D coaches started figuring that out and sat back and ask themself this. What would be the worse call for this situation and bam they have Zorn figured out. When we make a big play its because Zorn got lucky and called the right play catching the D of guard. |

One of the last questions during Zorn's press conference today was that Lewis has a bad terrible reputation as a play caller. I'm so excited that he is our new play caller.
Does it matter? Lewis will call the plays for the Eagles game and Zorn will be fired. Lewis will be named Intrim HC for the remaining part of the season. He'll get an interview to satisfy the Rooney rule and DS will bring in some GM, who will decide on a HC maybe with DS's persuation and everyone of the coaching staff will be cut. New blood brought in and players evaluated for the future of the team. My gut feeling. |
Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
Did anyone hear the news that just broke on fanhouse.com and 106.7 the fan? Apparently Danny boy tried to hire Shanahan to come in this season to replace Zorn to be the head coach, and he declined, some one needs to start a new thread

lol yupp when was the last time we actually contributed to anything? ever?

Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
Being a long-suffering Orioles fan, I can see some loose paralells to the initial period of Peter Angelos' dictatorship. Oriole fans typically refer to this general set of behaviors as management being "Stuck on Stupid".

Re: Reputation of Sherman Lewis- our new play caller
This may be old news but when we spoke last about this topic it was wild rumor. This now has been confirmed as truth.
Most the things we speak about on here are basically what ifs because we don't really know what the front office does behind closed doors but this affirms that they committed this action during this offseason. I think it speaks volumes about what they plan to do this offseason and how they plan to structure the future front office...with or without Vinny. It also speaks about how they are going to treat the next coach who comes to DC. They offered a job to someone without first having a vacancy. If that is no big deal to you then you're probably not one of the perspective coaches for the Washington Redskins because they'd probably give this some thought. As far as I know, Snyder has treated all of his coaches in the same manner. Turner, he berated and fired publicly. Schotty, he challenged and fired. Spurrier resigned with little resistance. Gibbs retired. Zorn is clearly a lame duck and a conversation was had. How is that a precursor to future behavior? I don't really see anything wrong with asking your preferred choice, 'Is there a circumstance that you would come and take over in season?' It's not like they were negotiating contract terms while Zorn is putting together the gameplan. I'm not a big Snyder guy but he gets shredded for everything, even if it's not a big deal. |
