Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis

Firing the General Manager in-season, something most fans want Snyder to do to Vinny. Still, for the Browns this is a questionable move. Especially if they replace him (if even just temporarily) with Bernie Kosar. Kokinis deserves better than this in my opinion. He'll bounce back quickly. Maybe here? Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
Cleveland's FO were the Kings of April when they landed both Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn in the first round a couple years back. With K2 and Braylon Edwards, the future looked bright. I blame Mangini and his waffling with the QB position. His ouster can't be far behind.

Well, Kokinis has only been GM since January. Odd to cut bait on a GM that quickly. The guy spent 13 years in the Baltimore front office. Hard to judge his body of work in Cleveland on 8 games. Sounds like he got a raw deal from another circus organization. |
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
Don't much about him, but the timing might be heaven sent.
|
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
How do you fire a GM after only a few months? It's not like he was taking over a playoff team so you have to wonder what Randy Lerner was expecting. Maybe he's just trying random things to pacify the Dawg Pound.
|
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
we better get chris polian over this guy though if we go for a new GM
|
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
Lerner reportedly interested in bringing in Ernie Accorsi as a consultant now. He apparently didn't like that there was an obvious chain of command from Kokinis to Mangini. But what did he expect? Mangini brought Kokinis in.
He'll make a big push for Cowher, Marty, or Holmgren I'm sure |
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
But it would be odd if they actually did bring in Accorsi as a consultant since he reportedly gave Lerner the seal of approval on Kokinis.
Either way, it's an ugly situation in Cleveland. Kudos to Lerner at least for starting to take action to correct it. I think he fired the wrong guy though |

He'll get a job somewhere, and the Browns still owe him 3.5 years worth of paychecks. I personally think Eric Mangini is not a good head coach at all. I thought he was a bad hire. |

Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
Having spent significant time in the Baltimore FO, Kokinis would be a significant upgrade over Cerrato. A big part of Baltimore's winning formula is drafting players who dominate in the trenches. Cerrato missed on Jared Gaither, whom Baltimore landed in the 5th round of the Supplemental Draft. You can bet that Kokinis was one of the guys who scouted Gaither at U of Maryland.

And Marty spent I think 7 or 8 years in Cleveland, and that was his first HC job. You can go home again? Holmgren, well, I'm sure Lerner wouldn't bat an eye at making him HC and GM. That of course would not be a good choice. |
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
It seems like Lerner wants a separation between coach and GM, so I don't think he'd bring in anyone to serve a dual capacity.
Kokinis really did not have much to do with the draft process in Baltimore. He was more like their Morocco Brown or a lite Bruce Allen. Kokinis dealt more with contract negotations, trades, free agency, scouting from other pro leagues, etc. He does have college scouting experience (but I think that was from his earlier days with the original Browns) |

Didn't he let Mangini hand-pick Kokinis? Even though they are two different people, it doesn't seem like much separation when you're letting your HC choose your front office. |

No I mean now. |
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
All I want to know is is he a good fit --capable fit-- for the Skins?
|
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
The Danny should be the next to make the same move. Bye, Bye, VINNY...;)
|
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
Snyder should get one of Lerner's Balls and do the same thing to Vinny, it's way overdue.
|
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
I would be willing to bet that Mangini is next. Looks like Lerner is feeling the heat from the fans and is AT LEAST doing something about it. But one of the reasons they suck is they don't have an NFL QB and they got rid of their two best offensive players. I don't think much of Brady Quinn but they've got to make a switch. Anderson is just awful.
|
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
How could Anderson just fall off the cliff like that. One year Pro-Bowler, next year he's a bum. Just doesn't make sense.

Put Quinn with on a different team with a good QB coach and you'll see the difference. He actually looked semi decent last year. |

I agree, but I don't think it will be done until offseason. We've got no shot of salvaging this year, and there is only so much you can do with a roster in the middle of the season. Our biggest problems can't be solved with a few tweaks here and there. We need massive overhaul. Which brings me back to Kokinis. I'd like to hear what he did that was so wrong. Maybe he's just the latest pariah in Lerner's sights. What does Lerner think this will accomplish? |
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
Some folks just can't work together. Doesn't mean either of them are bad people, but if Kokinis has been doing it for 13 years he won't be unemployed for long.

Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
Marty would be a great coach for Cleveland. I didn't like him as a coach here...He's the one who tried to tell Darrell Green how to play cornerback.
|
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
Whether you like Marty or not, you cant deny what he did with the teams he coached.
Id take him back in a heartbeat. |

Even during that Pro Bowl year there were signs that he was doing it with smoke and mirrors, he had a lot of ups and downs through that year. And then he tailed off badly at the end. |
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
Apparently Mangini and Kokinis weren't getting along so well.
|
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
I never thought I'd be envious of the Browns but they've already fired their GM, are seeking a big time 'Parcells type' and some disgruntled fans are getting an audience with the owner. Must be nice to have a semblance of a plan and an owner that's willing to admit he doesn't know everything about everything while demonstrating a firm grasp of nothing.

I'll still take the ST inspired playoff run. Gibbs did a great job at holding the team together. |

When a team lets go of someone like this do they have to pay off the contract now or can they pay them as the contract says? |
Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
When a team lets go of someone like this do they have to pay off the contract now or can they pay them as the contract says?
Typically the way the contracts are written they have to pay it as written (over the span of years) unless the coach is hired somewhere else in a similar capacity. For example, Mangini isn't still being paid by the Jets because he's the Browns coach. Shanahan is still being paid by the Broncos because he's not employed anywhere. In the case of Gruden, I'm not sure if he's still being paid by the Bucs since he's working but not for an NFL team. I'd think he still is. In either case, it doesn't make good financial sense for a team to lump sum pay a coach when he's let go. |

Why are fans meeting with the owner? Talk about a cluster F

Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis
not only did marty come back to finish 8-8 he also fired vinny, and then after finishing the season 8-3 was promptly fired himself and then vinny was rehired, thats what really scares me and makes me think vinny may actually survive this season and be around for a long time, and thats a scray thought
