who stays? who goes?
this subject seems to come up in every thread just though i'd start one just for it.
i think our whole o line needs to go, maybe keep heyer and levi jones around i'd like to see what levi still has in the tank, rabach probably has a year or two as well, obviously we will have to address the oline in the draft and free agency rb's i think it's very obvious portis is past his prime, is it worth keepin him i don't think so, see if we can anything for him, so we don't have to pay him, this is another issue we probably need to address in the draft as well, i'd keep betts he seems to get it done when he has the opportunity which i didn't think he could anymore, rock i'm on the fence yeah he is a captin, but what does he really do for us we keep picking up fourth backs so... wr once the season is over whoever has had the best season devin or malcom keep the better one and cut ties with the other yet another issue we could try to address in the draft but doubtful, moss is getting up there and so is are te is a tough one, davis could pan out, i'd hate to see cooley go though, i guess i'd like to see both of them here next year and see what happens, yoder might have one or two more good years as a solid blocker qb i'd like to see campbell stay one more year as doubtful as that is, it would be nice to have a game manager, and i'd like to see alot of colt during preseason, another issue we will be addressing in the draft and thoose options are endless there is a good crop of qb's this year d is overall solid it's be nice to find another corner, i think smoot is almost done he hasn't played all that much this year, but our line is pretty good our young guys have been steeping up we need to address the lb's though, fletcher is getting up there rocky has been playing pretty solid, i'm still not sold on blades yet but he isn't terrible, another issue we could address late in the draft or in free agency basically imo we have a lot of things that need to be addressed asap since our lack of drafting quality players and our only pickin up huge free agent players has left us with a team that is hurting in a lot of places, mostly offense |
Re: who stays? who goes?
I've thought about starting a similar thread but in the current state of our team I find it beyond difficult to be "objective" with something like this. Oh well since you brought it up I'll play along...seems easiest to me just to try and pick keepers you'd like to see start at first. Maybe I'll think about depth a little down the road :)
Offense: *Brennan *Betts *Dock *Cooley *Davis *Devin Thomas *Kelly *JC* If we really did a full sweep and cut CP, Moss, ARL, Sellers and the entire oline apart from Dock and maybe Jones depending on how he performs, then I'm for giving Jason one more chance to lead. I really, really like the kid and would give him another chance to become the team leader, suspecting w/ the likes of Portis, Moss and now Sellers and their various, um, attitude issues maybe Jason had no chance of getting everyone to line up behind him. Definitely w/ Moss I get the feeling he's 100% for himself out there... Defense: *Jarmon *Alexander *Phat Al *Orakpo *Rocky Mac *Los *Hall *Doughty *Horton Really hard to let Fletcher go but we need youth there and a monster MLB for the future. I'm really on the fence about keeping Hall but letting Moore go. I think w/ better coaching and pre-season team activities Hall could become a better tackler and all-around better corner. The same could be said for Moore at safety but I just haven't seen enough of him to tell...I wish Zorn/Blache would bench Landry for the season and give Moore the start to see where he's at. |
Re: who stays? who goes?
I think they should keep JC as a back up. I'm all for keeping Jones to see what he has left in the tank, but I'd want us to draft our franchise tackle next year. I'm all for parting ways with Moss, CP, and ARE. I'd like to get a pick out of any of those three players to be honest, but I don't know how realistic that is...maybe Moss I really wouldn't touch the defense much. Although with all the areas, even with no salary cap, it is going to be challenging getting good young players if you need 5 seasons to be eligible for free agency (i.e. JC will be a RFA).
rb's i think it's very obvious portis is past his prime, is it worth keepin him i don't think so, see if we can anything for him, so we don't have to pay him, this is another issue we probably need to address in the draft as well, i'd keep betts he seems to get it done when he has the opportunity which i didn't think he could anymore, rock i'm on the fence yeah he is a captin, but what does he really do for us we keep picking up fourth backs so...
I'd like to start over here...get some young fresh legs. I'd like to see us draft a young gun, or get a first year back eager to prove himself that has loads of talent. Then get a bruiser back in the draft with a later pick. Some division 2 rb that is a load, and has average speed so we can have the best of both worlds. But point is, start over here.
wr once the season is over whoever has had the best season devin or malcom keep the better one and cut ties with the other yet another issue we could try to address in the draft but doubtful, moss is getting up there and so is are
ARE needs to go, I still say he hurts the progress of Thomas and Kelly, both of whom need to stay. Moss needs to be a #2, or he needs to go. No more Moss being the ace. We are so afraid to cut ties with our best WR because we feel no one will step up. History tells us, someone will.
te is a tough one, davis could pan out, i'd hate to see cooley go though, i guess i'd like to see both of them here next year and see what happens, yoder might have one or two more good years as a solid blocker
Both need to stay. Cooley could be trade bait. But both are way too talented to let go.
qb i'd like to see campbell stay one more year as doubtful as that is, it would be nice to have a game manager, and i'd like to see alot of colt during preseason, another issue we will be addressing in the draft and thoose options are endless there is a good crop of qb's this year
Brennan can stay, the rest...well don't let the door hit you on the way out.
d is overall solid it's be nice to find another corner, i think smoot is almost done he hasn't played all that much this year, but our line is pretty good our young guys have been steeping up
Agreed.
we need to address the lb's though, fletcher is getting up there rocky has been playing pretty solid, i'm still not sold on blades yet but he isn't terrible, another issue we could address late in the draft or in free agency
Also agree.
basically imo we have a lot of things that need to be addressed asap since our lack of drafting quality players and our only pickin up huge free agent players has left us with a team that is hurting in a lot of places, mostly offense
Zorn certainly needs to go, hands down. And if we're having a wish list can I throw Cerrato and Snyder out on their duffs too? |

On defense I would hang onto Fletch one more year solely so that we can spend as many of our acquisition resources on offense as possible. If there is a cap, moving D.Hall would create an unthinkable cap nightmare, no? |
Re: who stays? who goes?
I'm tempted to keep Santana but thats because of a host of other reasons. For starters after this year I'd like to get rid of ARE (as good a guy as he is) and at least one of the wonder twins at receiver to send a message. Either way last thing I want right now is either Vinny (assuming he stays) or whoever our new GM is, to have an excuse to ignore the O-Line.

Re: who stays? who goes?
Roster Moves if I were GM!...and I trusted my scouting department.
QB- Brennan and Collins will compete to determine who stays. Either way I would look to draft a franchise signal caller (if, after a full draft process evaluation, one warrants that pick). HB- Trade CP for any pick we could get (probably 3rd or 4th). Cut Betts & Cartwright. Pick up either Jerious Norwood or Lendale White in FA (if they become available and are cost effective, no big deals) or draft a RB in the mid rounds. WR- Keep Moss, Thomas, Kelly & Mitchell. If no takers in trade for ARE, cut him. Get add'l depth player in FA. TE- Stand pat with Cooley, Davis & Yoder (unless younger blocking TE is available in FA or later rounds). OL- Starters= Dock & Rabach (don't like him, but may be hard to replace him this year short of a miracle or Edwin Willams progressing). Draft LT in early first (if not high on a particular QB) or late first (trading back in) or early second. Keep Levi depending on his performance this year. Montgomery & Williams for depth NOT STARTERS. Target RT with 3rd round pick (from Portis deal if applicable) or 4th round. Get RG in FA cause Rhinehart looks like a bust. FA's for depth. BTW- heyer sux. DL- I'm pleased with the roster here but may move Griffin out and put Golston/Alexander in to fill. Drop Montgomery. FA or late round for depth. Jarmon to replace retiring Daniels. LB- Keep McIntosh at the Will, Orakpo at the Sam, If replacement for London at Mike becomes available then replace him (not the highest priority). S- No complaints here. Although if a true FS becomes available get him and move Landry back to SS. CB- If uncapped year, trade Rogers for value. If capped year, franchise him and trade for value (1st or 2nd round either way...yes, some team will pay). Keep Hall, Tryon & Barnes. Drop Smoot and Westbrook. Fill starting spot opposite Hall via FA. Coaching Staff- Fire everyone! Allow new coach to pick his staff although I would see if he would want to retain Jerry Gray to run the defense. I lean toward Russ Grimm (look at his work with the Steelers and recently with the Cards) or another up and coming Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach. Re-tread SB coaches would not be ideal as this normally does not work. *I actually belive that with shrewd moves, proper scouting and a changing of the guard in terms of our core players....we are a couple years away from being a perenniel playoff team. |

Re: who stays? who goes?
I say the next GM and head coach should let guys go that will not help the team. It's that simple. Are some of those guys trash, or is it bad coaching? IMO, without a long range plan with a good GM then, there's not point in speculating.
I'd blow up the offense and try and keep the D the same. ST would also get a lot of my attention. |
Re: who stays? who goes?
I really think with some changes this team can be a contender again, very soon. It really depends on the coaching staff that is hired and the type of schemes that they look to implement. For the coaching staff I am hoping we get Gruden and he keeps Sherm Lewis as the OC. Jerry Gray as the DC.
QB: Ties have to be cut with JC, I'm sorry but I really feel the front office has damaged this kid 2 much, he simply can not win in washington. Tod Collins hopefully will retire.Keep Colt, hopefully draft Tim Tebow in the second round and the Eagles cut Vick. We sign him. Sounds crazy but for me a player doesn't win 2 college championships by luck. RB/FB: cut portis-i think he may have something left in the tank but he doesn't practice and sends the wrong message. Keep Betts, Rock and Sellers. Spend the money and sign Sproles. Making Rock, Betts, and Sproles as a 3 headed monster. WR: Cut ARE keep everyone else. Hopefully with better qb play the recievers play better. TE: keep all three, this position is a strength for us Oline: Draft the top Tackle sign the top olineman that hit the freeagent market. I don't know who to cut because depth on the line is scarse in the NFL. Defense keep the same. |

I basically assumed no cap which gives us the most freedom. In fact at this point we have to pray for an uncapped year as Skins fans or the options are severely limited. You're right about Fletcher Lotus. W/o him the defense suffers enormously unless we spend a very high draft pick for a MLB (which we all pretty much agree should be spent on a franchise OT) or Blades steps up big. There's no harm in keeping Fletcher another year :) |

Re: who stays? who goes?
Goes (one reason or another): Collins, Brennan, Betts (yep, my avatar), Ganther, Thomas or Kelly (literally an either or camp battle), Yoder, Samuels, Batiste, Randy Thomas, Will Montgomery, Rabach, Daniels, Griffin, Anthony Montgomery, Wynn, Henson, Smoot, Westbrook, Landry
Bring in: OT Trent Williams, LB Sean Weatherspoon or RB Anthony Dixon or CB Javier Arenas, OT Kyle Calloway or C J.D. Walton, RB Andre Anderson or RB Joique Bell, CB Sherrick McMannis, S Ryan Clark, NTs Fred Robbins or Aubreyo Franklin, WR Antonio Bryant, RB Kevin Faulk No quarterback, reasoning: I like both Ryan Mallett and Christian Ponder. A lot. |
Re: who stays? who goes?
I propose that the defensive hire for 2010 is someone versed in either the multiple defense, or a 3-4 coach. The reasoning is it looks like our personnel best fits a 3-4, as shown:
DL: NTs Haynesworth and Monty (or veteran replacement), DEs Lorenzo Alexander, Jeremy Jarmon, and Kedric Golston LBs: OLBs Brian Orakpo and Chris Wilson (plus UDFA help), ILBs London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh, and HB Blades |

It's so early for this without know who is going to be running things and what system we will be running.. The only thing I'd like to see regardless is that we get younger by moving on from Daniels, Wynn, R. Thomas and we need to start thinking about a replacement for Fletcher in next year's draft.

some of the things u guys have said are ok, some are crazy ...
KEEP -- JC Colt Portis (better line, better offense, better portis) Sellers -- get over the issues, the guy can play Moss -- is STILL our best reciever. Kelly Thomas M.Mitchell Dock Rhinehart Heyer Cooley Davis Yoder happy trails -- please trade Betts and ARE in some sort of package. PLEASE **bye bye rest of the line ... we need younger and some better vets. Defense KEEP Orakpo (ovbious) Haynes Alexander Golston Wilson Jarmon Rocky Fletch Blades Carlos Hall Landry Horton Moore Tryon -- seems to be improving.... it takes time especially at that position bye - smoot, ur finished. andre carter, we kno u can p[lay but ur gettin too old, doughty... we need a higher level of play, more hunger, im not seeing it and ur bad angle tackling and slow coverage skills must go ... anyone i 4.got ... well ... that says it right there |
Re: who stays? who goes?
don't know why you'd keep JC at this point. Portis really shouldnt be kept but his salary makes it impossible to move on him.
|
Re: who stays? who goes?
Im on board with the group that wants to trade Cooley, we really need draft picks and I don't think a 2nd plus 3rd rounder is asking too much for him. I have been one of JC's biggest supporters but I think 5 years is enough, you can only have so much of a window to succeed with a team and I think that window is closing fast. Moss is audi 5000, along with Devin. Keep Mitchell and Kelly and try to bring in a low priced veteran to even out the group.
O line, with the exception of dock and levi, no one on that line should be starting, Mike Williams should be cut, Heyer is a second maybe third string at best, Rabach is a back up, Rhinehart is a backup. I AM SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED BY BUGEL, HE HAS NOT DEVELOPED A SINGLE GOOD OFFENSIVE LINEMAN IN HIS TIME HERE AND I THINK HE SHOULD BE FIRED AS WELL |

I think as a fan board, it's obviously what fans like to do. But you are absolutely right, lets get a solid GM in, let him choose the HC and player personnel staff. I would have to let portis go because he doesn't practice and seems to be a disruption to the team chemistry.

Re: who stays? who goes?
My choices to keep would be:
Campbell D. Thomas M. Kelly M. Mitchell Fred Davis Cooley Heyer Rinehart Doc Samuels (if he wants to return, but would prefer if he retires for both, his and Redskins' sakes) Moss Betts Levi Jones (only if he performs well this season, but he should not expect to be starter unless he can beat out rookies or FAs) E. Williams Colt (only if he wins the competition against FAs and/or FA rookies) Orakpo Haynesworth Jarmon Wilson Fletcher (I would want to keep him for one more year, just until we can find his replacement) Blades C. Rogers Hall (maybe just until we can find his replacement) Carter Landry Horton Doughty Moore (for all safeties, I would try to sign some FAs to compete for the spot, whoever is best wins) Golston Griffin (I know he's old, but we can't really expect to fill in all positions within one off-season; beside Griffin still has some left in tank, especially with Haynesworth beside him) L. Alexander Rocky McIntosh Kevin Barnes Tryon (maybe) |
Re: who stays? who goes?
I look at "who to keep and who to let go" a little differently. First of all, contracts dictate a lot of potential moves, so financially it might not make good sense to move players that are under performing. Most of the problems with the Redskins stem around the fact that other teams are more athletic, faster, stronger and younger. These problems cannot be fixed overnight. The bright side is all these attributes tend to go together. Younger more skilled players tend to be more athletic, faster and stronger. To me, its a matter of attrition. Look to move the older players or allow their contracts to expire. Make an effort to get quality backups for the aging players that you decide to keep. Here is my list of aging players that need to be replaced or need quality competition.
Ethan Albright Jason Campbell Todd Collins Phillip Daniels London Fletcher Cornelius Griffin Santana Moss Clinton Portis Casey Rabach Antwaan Randle El Chris Samuels Mike Sellers Hunter Smith Fred Smoot Randy Thomas Renaldo Wynn |

I actually think Tebow could work here, but let's put it this way: the man is going to come out with more than 40 college starts plus significant package time as a true freshman. If he needs to go to the bench for any length of time, you're not getting anything from him. And because you're rebuilding, you wouldn't draft him to be a package player. Either you think he can be an every down quarterback who uses the pocket well enough to compensate for a slow release, or he isn't. No wildcat crap. |

Re: who stays? who goes?
Hmmm. I would keep:
Doughty, Orakpo, Horton, Montgomery, Golston, Haynesworth, Fletcher, Jarmon, Wilson, Blades, McIntosh, and Moore on D. Mitchell, Rabach, Dockery, Cooley, Cartwright, and Campbell on O. Those are just my preferences. They may not be realistic. I wouldn't rule out trading anyone for O-lineman or draft picks. Oh yeah, I forgot the Redsnapper and Hunter. |
Re: who stays? who goes?
Gtripp I think that would be the ideal scenario for a Vick/ Tebow backfield. Vick as the main QB tebow as the package/ learning rookie until he took over. Gruden would be crazy enough to pull it off.
WE WOULD NEED A BETTER THAN AVERAGE LINE however, and we don't have that. |

Stays:
QB: Brennan RB: Sellers WR: Thomas, Kelly, Mitchell TE: Cooley, Davis, Yoder LT: LG: Dockery C: Rabach RG: Edwin Williams RT: Stephon Heyer (Backup), Levi Jones (depending on how he does) DE: Jarmon, Lorenzo Alexander DT: Haynesworth, Gholston, OLB: McIntosh, Orakpo (should be at DE), Chris Wilson MLB: Fletcher, Blades, Henson CB: Hall, Barnes S: Horton, Doughty, Moore Trade them or keep them: RB: Portis, Betts WR: Moss, Randle El DE: Carter DT: Montgomery CB: Rogers S: Landry The rest can just be gone with. |
Re: who stays? who goes?
Why would you wanna keep Orakpo at LB? It's so obvious that is a mistake it isn't even funny anymore. If we do nothing else move Orakpo back to full-time defensive end. He could be a Freeney esque player.
Freeney plays in the pass happy AFC South (excluding the Titans). Keeping Orakpo at Sam (in a 4-3...although a 3-4 may look good too with our personnel) prevents the hard nosed foes in the NFC East from running at him all game and wearing him down (a la Jason Taylor last year). Orakpo is improving every week and has 5.5 sacks on the season as a hybrid. |
Re: who stays? who goes?
Everyone can stay except Moss. I really hate the guy.

Re: who stays? who goes?
Those who definitely stays next year
OFFENSE DEFENSE 1. Malcolm Kelly 1. Brian Orakpo 2. Fred Davis 2. Jeremy Jarmon 3. Devin Thomas 3. Albert Haynesworth 4. CB5 4. Kedric Golston 5. Derrick Dockery 5. Anthony Montgomery 6. Eddie Williams 6. Lorenzo Alexander 7. Edwin Williams 7. Chris Wilson 8. Marko Mitchell 8. London Fletcher 9. Hunter Smith 9. Kareem Moore 10. Shaun Shuisham 10. Chris Horton 11. Stephon Heyer (Backup) 11. Reed Doughty 12. Mike Sellers (maybe) 12. DeAngelo Hall 13. Carlos Rogers 14. Justin Tyron 15. Kevan Barnes 18. Rocky McIntosh 19. London Fletcher Those who we can trade 1. Sanatana Moss (or return as KR/PR) 2. Andre Carter (or return for 1 more stint) 3. Chris Cooley (he has the highest trade value [1st] and we need both a franchise QB and LT in the draft). 4. Clinton Portis (or cut outright if possible) 5. JC (backup role if he wants to return) 6. Laron Landry (or we can keep him for another year) Those who need to get cut 1. ARE 2. Betts 3. The rest of o-line except Levi Jones 4. Todd Collins 5. Philip Daniels 6. Cornelius Griffin 7. Fred Smoot |
Re: who stays? who goes?
Cut:
Betts Carter Cartwright Collins P.Daniels Griffin Moss Portis ARE Sellers Smoot M.Williams Wynn Yoder I tried to cut all the older guys, but I did keep some who have 7yrs in the league. I also kept Fletcher with his 11. If we can find a viable replacement then cut him also. QB) Most likely JC is gone. I know some of you want to keep him and give him one more chance but in my eyes he's had 6yrs of a chance and he has shown no improvement. I also doubt he will want to stay after last summers drama and his bad yr he's having this yr even though it's not all his fault. Lastly he won't take a job to be a back up. He's been a starter in this league and most likely feels he's starting material and will want to go to another team who needs a starter or will give him a chance to be starter. I'm not sure if Colt is the man either but I'm willing to keep him one more year to see improvement. Look for a viable #1 QB or look to the draft. WR) If anyone of this team deserves another chance it's Thomas and Kelly under new positional coaching. Lets get someone in who knows what they are doing in the NFL and train these young WR's including M.Mitchell. Pick up some UFA's in the draft. RB) As someone else said cut everyone, pick up a nice somewhat fast RB, then go with a big bruiser to power the ball when needed. OL) Get rid of the old guys taking up roster spots. Levis has only been in the league 7yrs so I kept him. Draft a LT and a RT to build around and keep the young guys we have now to be Guards. I would hold open camp for OL, tell all the UFA OL to show up cause they might get a job. I'd keep all the rest of our young guys to fill the Guard position. I have issue's with Rabach getting bowled over every game also so he might get cut as well. TE) If Cooley comes out healthy I'd keep him and Davis and bring in an UFA. DL) I would say that we are still set at Defense, but there are some changes I'd make. Move Orakpo to DE along with Jarmin. Pick up some UFA's to fill in the spots I took from Griffin and Daniels. LB) Draft or Sign a SLB (keep Wilson as back up) and MLB (if we cut Fletcher). CB) Try to keep Rodgers, plan on starting all the young guys and bring in some more. S) Should be set. Landry, Doughty, Horton, and Moore. Maybe look for a practice squad guy in case someone gets hurt. Obvious changes: Fire Cerrato and hire a true GM. Give him cart blanch to hire a HC and allow the HC to hire his own staff. Because the Defense is ranked top 5 last few yrs I might even leave the Defense alone 1 more yr before I cut all the old guys. Maybe fixing the offensive side of the ball this first yr and work on Defense next yr. Then yr 3 fix the remaining problems and hopefully we are a contender. |

Maybe it's just me but I don't really like Rabach. I keep hearing how he's getting run over or not blocking his man. Maybe it's cause he's trying to help out other OL but I think we need an upgrade at Center. Maybe it's Edwin Williams...I don't know. |
