Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job

so much for any of those hopes about him taking over the defense. |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
buckle in it's starting early this year
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
I hadn't realized Gibbs was involved in this, but good for Gray he deserves this opportunity. He'll be coaching Fred Smith's son at QB, the aptly named Cannon.

re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
Good for Gray. Sad for us. I think this isn't about implosion as much as a much deserved promotion for a quality nfl coach.

What are we getting so upset about here?
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
Good for Gray but I really, really hate to see him go.

Looks like the children have found another opportunity to use profanity. It's a good opportunity for him and I hope he does well. I think this is another clear indication of a housecleaning this offseason. There's really no reason for Snyder to let Gray leave if he had any intention of retaining anyone from the staff. If there was one coach to retain, it would probably be Gray. Now the biggest question is if he leaves before the end of the season, does Kirk Olividatti take over the media duties that Greg Blache finds beneath him? |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
yea sucks to see him leave, but he does deserve it hope memph does well.
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
Nice to see a member of the coaching staff get a boost...especially Gray cuz it seems he's a class guy.
I wonder if this has implications for coaching staff decisions in '10. Blache is certain to leave, right? Gray was probably the next in line for D coord. With both gone it seems like the FO, whatever that is, will look outside the franchise for new leadership on the defensive side of the coaching staff. |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
what was Gray coach of?
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
what was Gray coach of?
Secondary. Personally I think secondary coaches tend to be great DC/HC candidates. There's a lot of scheming and packaging in the secondary so these guys are typically real smart. Tomlin was secondary coach first...I bet a lot more solid HCs out there were secondary guys early on too. |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
It's a shame he didn't get the job a few years sooner, he could have had Deangelo Williams in his arsenal. Good for him though.

John Harbaugh was secondary coach in Philly before taking the Baltimore job. And I think Raheem Morris was a secondary coach before being bumped to HC, but I'm not positive. |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
Wasn't Harbaugh special teams coach? Was he secondary coach as well?
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
He deserves to get outta this circus. Great for him.

He was just a special teams coach in Philly. |

He coached the secondary for one season. Gray = First man off the sinking ship. |

Is it possible, that Blache, Snyder, and Gibbs conspired to let Gray take over the media duties to give him more exposure. I realize this would involve assigning less petty motives to our owner/staff than normal, but it seems very possible to me. Didn't Gibbs dinner with Snyder come around the same time? again, pure speculation, but perhaps Gibbs discussed Memphis as a possibility, and Blache backed off to let Gray have some air time. Seems that would be an invaluable asset in showing his presentability. |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
Congratulations, Jerry Gray! This is a great opportunity.
As for what this might portend in regard to further Redskins coaching changes, I doubt that Jerry Gray taking this job has anything to do with that. I can't think of any reason why Dan Snyder would try to deny Gray such an excellent job opportunity when we're evidently out of the race for the playoffs. |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
I am sad to see Gray go as a Skins fan but happy as a Memphis alum to welcome him in to the fold. Memphis has produced several NFL players and I'm looking forward to seeing even more now that Coach Gray is in town.
If Coach Gray happens to read this forum please make sure to make a trip to A&R bbq, one of the cities many hidden gems. |

so much for any of those hopes about him taking over the defense.
unfortunately, unless our next coach is just a patsy like zorn, i have the feeling whoever he is is going to clean house on both sides of the ball. I'd honestly be surprised if ANY of our senior coaching staff remain. certainly none on our offense should remain. |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
GL to him, i thought he would run the defense next yr but i guess we'll have to go another direction.
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
its going to be tough for him at memphis. i wish him luck.
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
This is great for Jerry, I wanted him as our DC next year. Time to go get one of our own in Todd Bowles.
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
Jerry Gray is one of THE class acts in the NFL. I doubt you could round up a dozen people who have a bad word to say about him. Forget his coaching abilities - - which are very good; the Redskins are losing a man of character and grace. It is sort of like when Darrell Green left the team.
He is taking over a woeful Memphis team - - probably could not crack the Top 100 in college football this year if such a ranking existed. I hope the alums and the administration at Memphis give him a few years to work a turnaround there. He has LOADS of work to do. Good luck, Coach... |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
Can't fault the man for taking advantage of an opportunity. Good for him, and I hope he meets with success in Memphis. Go for it. His departure means an opportunity for someone else here.

Well Jim Zorn was supposedly real smart too when he was hired as head coach |

Secondary, special teams.. They both begin with an "S." That's what I get for posting at 2am. Kinda like the way I gushed over the Russ Grimm post in the coach thread. GMScud posting at 2am = fail. |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
im all but at the point where the whole coaching staff needs to go. good luck Gray
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
If the staff is going get the overhaul it needs (except possibly Blache), then good for him securing a job ahead of time, especially a HC job. I'll root for him to succeed.
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
Good for him; hope it works out well.
|
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
tonight on news4 rogers said "i wish he was still here... or with me"
sounds like gray is definitely gone and kinds sounds like rogers is saying he his gone too, espesically the way he said it, smirking and laughing |
What are we getting so upset about here?
I don't know. I don't see NFL DC when I think of him. The college ranks will be good for him. If he does well for a few years then maybe he will get a chance. |
re: Update: Jerry Gray Not Taking Memphis Job
Man I was hoping that he could take over the defense next year. I have posted this numerous times that the reason why the defense is so successful, because the defense we run is Williams defense with a few Blache wrinkles. The structure stability on defense allows them to add players and lose players and continues to be a top ten defense. I wish we could keep the defense the way they are next year.
