the great Joe Bugel
i saw the jim zorn appreciation thread and wanted to start a bugel one, it looks like he may retire next year which is kinda expected, if i was him i wouldn't want to start over again with a new system. and i just wanted to send a huge thanks to buges and everything he has done for the redskins over the years. he gave us the hogs which gave us multiple super bowls, and since his return he has done nothing short of work miracles, we haven't drafted any offensive lineman higher than the third round in 10 years and for the last 6 years buges had made the best o line out of what he had and the work he did this year was amazing putting together guys that hadn't played in the league in years to form a line that could at least give us a chance. i wish him nothing but the best with whatever he chooses to do with his career.
personally he is the only coach i want back next year, guess we will find out tomorrow |

I wish him the best in retirement

Agreed 100%. |
re: the great Joe Bugel
He's done a lot for us, thanks Mr. Bugel!
|
re: the great Joe Bugel
He did a lot considering what he had.
He's a HOF-er in my book. |
re: the great Joe Bugel
thanks to coach bugel. good luck to you in your retirement.
|
re: the great Joe Bugel
Thanks for all the hard work you've done over the years. Enjoy your retirement Coach Buges. You deserve it!
|
re: the great Joe Bugel
I wish he could coach forever! The best to Joe B for giving so much to the game and the team....I know he loves
|
re: the great Joe Bugel
Without Buges we would not have three Lombardi trophies. Enjoy your rest, Buges.
|
re: the great Joe Bugel
I know this is slightly off topic but who was Shannahan's line coach after Alex Gibbs left in 2003?
|
re: the great Joe Bugel
I don't think anyone has embodied what the Redskins mean like Joe Bugel has. One of the all time greatest, I wish he was going out better than this.
Hail to Coach Bugel! |
re: the great Joe Bugel
Man, I would personally love to hear this quote from Buges, even though it would be outside the scope of something he would say publicly.
"You know I was just lucky to work with a lot of great personnel guys that helped me get the players I needed. Guys like Bobby Bethard, Charlie Caserly, and Bruce Allen." |
re: the great Joe Bugel
Joe Bugel has done a lot for this franchise, but it was past his time to go. Good luck in the future, Joe. I wish you the best of health for your remaining years.

Rick Dennison I believe |
re: the great Joe Bugel
Buges will always be the Redskins' offensive line coach.
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
I read about Buges retiring in the wash post & the franchise wanting to do something for him. I wish he was leaving under better circumstances, but it really may be time for him to go if for no other reason than getting a fresh start for the new staff & letting him walk away before dealing w/any more drama.
Great coach & a face of the franchise over the years. How many o line coaches have had his level of notoriety? Alex Gibbs is the only other one I can name. Buges will always be a redskin. I look forward to seeing him in the middle of fedex field before a standing ovation in the near future. Hopefully it will be in the midst of better times for him & our Skins. |
Re: the great Joe Bugel
Buges had head coaching stops in Arizona and Oakland, but he will always be remembered as a True Redskin and perhaps the greatest O-line coach ever.

Can't say it better than this. If your time is up, Buges...thanks for the incredible memories and Lombardis. |
Re: the great Joe Bugel
Nobody was better on channel 4 on Monday evening with Sonny & George than Bugel. I hope he has a great retirement.
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
Buges will always be appreciated but no longer is the top of his game. Back in the game loyalty was a great vurtue which has helped Buges be the icon of the NFL when it comes to Offensive line play!
Today with free agency it holds him back a little! All that said Buges is a Beast! He is up there with Joe Gibbs! Good luck to you in retierment! Thanks for what you have done for the Redskins in the past. |
Re: the great Joe Bugel
I think the team is planning a tribute to Buges but they don't want it to be overshadowed by the announcement of the new head coach. Look for something on him soon.
He and Jim Hanifan were the best to coach the o-lines here in recent times. Best of luck to him in retirement, time to go home to the wife. |
Re: the great Joe Bugel
you guys have said it all. after all these years in the NFL, i have never read one bad thing about coach Buges. time to enjoy retirement
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
put the man in the ring
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
Just like Zorn will be remembered for his trick play on the Monday night game, Joe Bugel will be remembered as the architect of the hogs (perhaps the best OL of all time) Bugel reminds me of Burgess Meredith's character on Rocky (Micky) a tough old bird that you don't fuck with. Thanks for all the great memories and service to the team.
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
Thanks for the lovely memories Bugel
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
So, have we heard anything specific about his retirement? or GB's? Seems like this all came up yesterday, but nothing more official has been said.
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
I wonder why they haven't announced the retiring. The team is obviously going to do something special for him, but why not announce something??
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
He is one of my favorite coaches of all time! :)

Re: the great Joe Bugel
A good man and a good OL coach - - whose "fame" is based on the fact that he was the coach of an offensive line that had 3 and maybe 4 Hall of Fame players on it during his time as the coach. Let me be as kind as I can here:
It would be really hard to f*ck up that kind of talent. Richie Kotite may have been able to make that unit into one that should be remembered for decades after it was off the field.
It's time to smell the roses, Coach. There aren't any OL here now who will ever get into the HoF without buying a ticket just like all the rest of us ordinary folks. Vaya con Dios! |

Re: the great Joe Bugel
tryfuhl:
Bobby Beathard drafted and presented Joe Bugel - - and Joe Gibbs by extension - - Mark May and Russ Grimm. Beathard also signed Joe Jacoby as an undrafted free agent and when Jake arrived in camp the staff tried to put Jake on the DL until Beathard told them that Jake was signed as an OT. Those three guys - - two HoF quality players and a guy who might be considered in that class - - were handed to Bugel virtually on Day One. To his credit, Bugel did not screw that up. Several years later as age hit "The Hogs", Beathard - - and no one else - - engineered a trade with the Chargers to acquire Jim Lachey who is another HoF caliber OT. Joe Bugel had that one land in his lap; he didn't develop anything there; Lachey was already a Pro Bowler when he arrived in DC. Bugel is a good coach who happened to be in the right place at the right time and get a bunch of guys who would make him "famous". He has been an OL coach in other places since that run in the 80s when he had HoF quality talent under his tutelage and guess what:
With ordinary talent, his offensive lines have been - - "ordinary".
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
I like what Casserly said on WPL today. He said Buges was the best o-line coach he'd ever been around. No matter who he coached, that player got better. He also reminded people that George Stark was the only real veteran 0-lineman on our first SB winning team, the rest were 2nd year players.

Do you think that Beathard really knew that he'd be getting HoF guys in the late late rounds though? I mean it's obvious Bugel didn't draft the guys. Not to discredit Beathard one bit. |
Re: the great Joe Bugel
How about Mark Schlereth, Ed Simmons, McKenzie, etc. all pretty good OL.
|
Re: the great Joe Bugel
So talent makes a coach look better? Brilliant.
Buges did have a significant hand in making some of those diamonds in the rough sparkle. |

Re: the great Joe Bugel
I don't know about hiring Alex Gibbs to replace Bugel. For God's sake the guy is one year younger then Bugel. Personally this would be a hell of a time to extend a job offer to Ray Brown. Currently he's working for the Bills.
He (Ray Brown) was hired as assistant offensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills on January 17, 2008. |

He had one great run with OLs in the 1980s and had 4 Hall of Fame level talents play most of that time on his offensive lines. I'm not saying he is a bum or a failure; I am saying that his achievements have to be measured in terms of the contributions that others handed to him. That's all. Given really sub-standard talent to work with in 2008 and 2009, the Redskins' OL under his tutelage and his motivation were sub-standard. If that isn't obvious to you, I don't know how else to explain a combined record of 12-20 with minimal offensive output. |
