2010 East West Shrine Game

your thoughts on players from this game

surprised with kam chancellor, apparently he has had a great week of practice too. I am a Hokie, but I've never been convinced he was nearly as good as people thought. He was often victimized in coverage and missed a lot of easy tackles while going for the big hit (sound familiar)? but he is playing well

McShay has Anthony Davis going to us at 4 and has kansas city picking russel okung at 5...thats a head scrather

I've heard he has all the tools but maturity is the question.

I would be shocked if we pass on Okung... (if we chooses OL) That would be insane. I still think this team will go QB though.

Kam Chancellor looks pretty good at free safety...Has a little of the Deangelo Hall syndrome (cocky, not mature) But (big play ability)

Skelton is extremely slow... He has very little mobility it seems. I haven't seen him play alot but he's never looked that good to me.

Smootsmacks John Skelton is playing right now

I do like Skelton's big arm and quick pass though

I think Kafka was the best QB I saw today. I can't believe that as good of a player as Cody Grimm is, that he didn't get invited to any of these games or the combine. Also Freddie Barnes had 155 catches and 19 TD's this past year...thats crazy

Yeah I was surprised by that as well. I'm a huge Hokie fan and Kam has killed us this year. He always was being torched in coverage. So glad he graduated.

Well this site didn't see us passing on him. I have been lied to. I have heard that Okung is not the type of OL Shanahan would use and that Shanahan would pick someone smaller and faster. Okung is only 305 and the write up sounds like someone Shanahan would want.
Strengths

College Football's best offensive lineman. Ideal left tackle, possessing adequate size and great athleticism. Tremendous feet and balance, and naturally drops his hips and plays with leverage and functional strength. Very strong arms and hands, and good wingspan to keep blockers off his body. Drops very quickly into his pass sets, and can handle both power and speed rushers. Great balance allows him to adjust well to second moves and pick up stunts. Sticks like glue to blocks. Very aggressive run blocker who gets some movement and excels at position blocking. Fires off the ball and gets to the second level; probably the best OT in space in the nation. Great cut blocker, and plays with nastiness.
Anthony Davis has more upside then Okung while still having a high floor (though not as high as Okung's). McShay is convinced that when workouts and interviews roll around we'll see Davis shoot past Okung on most draft boards. Also while it only means so much at this point, Davis was seen as the best OL prospect coming out of high school, a distinction that Oher held last year and ironically Oher was far and wide the best rookie lineman. Okung was a 3 star prospect in case you were wondering (like I said only means so much at this point). Both are very good but at this point I'm inclined to think that Davis might be a better fit especially since he played in a zone blocking scheme at Rutgers.

You have to factor in the height to weight ratio. Right now Okung is listed at 299 on Scouts Inc but even if he was 305 it would be akin to him being around 6'2 288. Keep in mind Shannahan doesn't always go with light lineman. Then again the heavy first round pick of Shanahan's (George Foster 338 lbs) was one of Shanahan's worst picks. Still everything I've read on him indicates that Okung would be a great fit here.

I think we should consider Kafka. He will be around in the 2nd and maybe 3rd if we are lucky. His performance though got a lot of people noticing. I still say we need to shy away from the Big name Qbs. They are all from big time programs and were surrounded by lots of talent. Kafka was the Northwestern offense and made things happen.

I wouldn't mind taking him in the 4th.

He finished the east-west shrine game with 150 (and the offensive MVP) and led his team to a 11-play, 55 yard scoring drive.

NFL.com had an article. Sorry, I'm a lazy idiot that doesn't know how to post links.

I watched your guy a couple of times..he has the ability to move down field fast..hopefully at the combine he'll become a big name

Big name Qbs are guys on primetime Tv and wind up leading teams into playoffs..

Gus....no offense I am sick of mutts playing Qb for the Washington Redskins...I want a Thoroughbred

Why not? The Patriots run a 3-4 with a space eater in Wilfolk and Piolli is basically trying to clone the Patriots in KC. Plus to my knowledge the Cheifs don't have a space eater that would be on par with Cody. Plus I wouldn't expect them to take him at 5 but with the selection of Tyson Jackson at 3 last year it wouldn't exactly surprise me.

If I'm Scott Pioli I'm getting a Tackle to protect Matt Cassel and give him sometime and not running for his life. Plus space eaters can be gotten in FA (wilfork, hampton, possible jamal williams if San Diego lets him go)

Yeah but look at the big name QBs from the NCAA that get all the hype? Palmer is the only one that received any big time hype in college and delivered in the NFL, and that was only for one season really as the run was squashed by the upstart Jets. Matt Ryan received some nice accolades from the CFB TV media, but nothing like Young, Tebow, Leinart, McCoy, or Bradford. I never even heard of Flacco til draft day. Big Ben got some press, about the same amount that Ryan did, but wasn't coined a superstar. My whole point about Kafka is that he has a lot of talent, wasn't surrounded by the most talented bunch at Northwestern, but made things happen. The "magic 3" were from NCAA powerhouses, stacked with talent that went against teams with inferior rosters and only really played 2-3 real games in which the opponent had a chance at making it a game. Stull from Pittsburgh, Sheehan from BGSU, Canfield from Oreg St, and Lefevour from CMU are other guys on my QB wishlist if we do indeed go QB this draft in the upper to mid rounds.

Sanchez received a lot of hype, but nothing compared to Leinart or Bradford, etc.

I saw enough of Kafka in the Bowl game in Florida. He was the offense, and a good player. The Bowl games sure tied up traffic while I was down there.

Didn't get to see the game, but I'm a Hokie too & I was disappointed w/Kam this year. Seen it happen a lot where a player comes into his sr. year labeled as a potential 1st rounder but then he has a so-so or off year.

He's a guy that will likely test very well at the combine, he's got all the physical traits. I always love to see my HOkies in b&g but safety is arguably one of our deepest positions.
