This Offseason - BE THE GM/Coach!!!!

Okay, we all like to do it, and opinions on personnel moves are like assholes, everybody's got one (or maybe more.......EWWWW). But I digress, this thread is sort of like a brainstorming session. You be the owner, and make some moves.....Now, dont come in here, say well, Id sign P Manning, Andre Johnson, Polumalu and Bailey back, no. Do a little research, and make a viable response. Its fun to wonder what our team will look like after Shannyhan and his minions do their thing, but at least for this thread, Shanny is number two. You say what goes, and what you think will work to get the Burgandy and Gold back to greatness.

Have Fun!!!!!

Re: This Offseason - BE THE OWNER!!!!!

Okay, I'll give this a dry run.

First off, the draft. Lets first of all get rid of this #4 pick, and get us some more picks.

Our Number 4 pick plus ARE, for......Arizonas 26th pick, Steve Breaston and a 3rd Rounder.
Maybe a stretch, but some could say that is fair. okay, draft either Bulaga from Iowa or Campbell from USC. Both could step in as first year starters and would be a major upgrade. Lets say Samuels doesn't retire......BAMMO, your tackles are taken care of, Pro Bowler and an athletic rookie to fit nicely into Shannys zone blocking scheme.

Next, with our second round pick, lets go down to TCU, and grab a BIG, but deceivingly FAST guard Newhouse. Im wagering that if he is as fast as scouts think he is, his stock value might rise and he wont be here for us to snag, but here is to hoping. He also steps right in to start. Our third rounder, well, I say you gotta get Pike here. I've been saying this since the middle of the college season. This kid is John Elway plus three inches. Give this guy to Shanny, let him ride the pine and carry the clipboard under JC for just one year, put him in in a couple games here and there this year, and then let him start in 2011, given we even have a season. He could be a Hall of Famer, given the right coach. Shanny had Elway from early on, now he gets Pike from the absolute START!!! I smell a SUPER BOWL sometime in our future!!!!!!!

Defense - Keep our Line intact as it is. a 4-3 with Carter, Golston, hayney, and Osackpo.

LB - SIGN MERRIMAN!!!! With the line we have, he is the type of LB that would benefit from guys like we have up front. His fire will be reignited, plus, I dont think San Diego is going to offer him squat compared to what he was making there previously. In swoops Dan Snyder for the pick off. Offer Merriman a little more than the other bidders, and Solidify our second line of defense, literally. Merriman, Fletcher, McIntosh. You got your LB's.

Secondary - Dunta Robinson from the Texans. Get rid of Rogers. Keep Laron Landry, and then get his brother from the Ravens and you got your secondary.

Give Breaston the number 1 WR slot over Moss, move Moss to numer 2, and thomas slides into the slot.

Portis gets one more season with Shanny to redeem himself and hopefully get back to form with those 5+ ypc averages he had in those seasons in Denver. Hoping for alot, but in the end, I think its doable.

So, how'd I do????

I would add to this to remember the uncapped year rules regarding RFAs. There are a lot of good players out there that are going to be RFAs b/c of the uncapped year rules.

Re: This Offseason - BE THE OWNER!!!!!

Free Agency:
Look at the following players. Depending on the cap situation by then some of these players may or may not be available. If the cap is still in place, then only sign modest players to modest salaries. Think Springs/Marcus Washington signings.
WR: Kevin Walter. Knows Alex's system. Good receiver. Should work well in our system if we can pry him away from the Texans.
WR: Brandon Marshall. Could be acquired for a relatively low price, had great success with Shanahan before and may be worth the move. Play hard ball with the Broncos. He's in the dog house.
FB: Peyton Hillis: Also in the dog house and familiar with Shanahan. Get him in the door for a modest price.
OL: Marcus McNeill is worth a look at LT. Not sure if he fits the zone scheme they want to install, but worth a gamble and a look if not.
DT: Vince Wilfolk. This guy can anchor the 3-4 defense and would be necessary to have a player like this to make a transition to the 3-4 defense. Lets us move Haynesworth and Carter to ends for a formidable DL.
LB: Kirk Morrison. The future London Fletcher. Not flashy but does his job and does it damn well. Only 28 and can play with us for years in the middle.
LB: Karlos Dansby could be a good outside LB in the 3-4 or 4-3. We could use one more. Unfortunately, he may be out of our league.
DB: Dunta Robinson. Unhappy in Houston and a UFA regardless of CBA this year. Could be worth it to take a flier on him.

These are the bigger name's I'd pursue. We obviously can't sign all of them. When it comes down to it, I think we need another LB, DB, and an NT if we go to the 3-4. Another WR, RB, or Fullback would be nice as well.

Draft:
Ideally, we'll trade back for more picks, but for the sake of argument I'll assume we have no trade partner.
1st: S - Eric Berry. If he's not available, it could be McClain, Okung, or Williams. I know this is controversial. But I want the best player on the board when we pick. I know we have a great need at OL, but with the 4th pick in the draft you take the player that can most impact your franchise for the next 10 years. Go with best available, and I think Eric Berry is that player. He'll allow Landry to go to his more natural SS spot, and help keeping him from being exposed in coverage against WRs, allow him to play the run, blitz, and generally be near the ball instead of 40 yards off the action. Blache tried to play him like Sean Taylor. He wasn't Sean Taylor. Berry isn't either, but he has range similar to Taylors.
2nd: QB - Pike
4th: Best G available.
5th: Best RB available
7th: Best G available

If we could trade back or acquire more picks. Great, but I don't see that happening.

Offseason:
Work the hell out of these guys. Make sure Campbell knows this team rides on his success as a leader. Make him the unquestioned fall guy behind this. He's either going to lead this offense to glory or he's not. It lives and dies by his dedication and execution. Work them hard in every camp, really hard. Make them earn everything. Most importantly, get training camp out of Ashburn. As much as I love the convenience of being there, make them uncomfortable. Have them sleeping in some crappy dorm at some crappy school eating crappy meals and beating the crap out of each other for a few weeks. Get some fire in them and out of their NoVA mansions. I think we've made some of the players a bit too comfortable. Take them out of the comfort zone.

We need real accountability on this team, Shanahan can bring it. Discipline is paramount to our success.

Final Thoughts:
I'd rather have a team that's built for the future than built for tomorrow. I know there's really no rebuilding in the NFL anymore, but I want us to rebuild. Get younger, get stronger, and build a new team through the Shanahans. This team needs an explosive offense. You win games in the NFL throwing the ball now. Running and defense is, for the most part, obsolete. If you're amazing at both you have a chance, but you better be damn good (see the Jets). Too many rules favor the passing game. So don't blow the future to win today.

Re: This Offseason - BE THE OWNER!!!!!

Well, first off If I'm the owner/Dan Snyder, I'm keeping my mouth shut and letting Shanahan and Bruce Allen doing their thing. So now I'm going to rename your question as "Be the GM/coach"

I'm going to cut Randy Thomas, tell Chris Samuels to save his body and life and retire, cut Philip Daniels, Cornelius griffin, Todd Collins, smoot, tryon, wynn and Rabach

Trade or cut
Moss, randel el, sellers, betts, portis, carter(won't fit in 3-4)

I'm Re-signing

Rocky McIntosh, Hunter Smith, tendering Carlos rogers for a low pick/re-signing him for a small deal, and Levi Jones as depth or a LT to develope what ever RT/LT we get.

In Free Agency I'm going after:

Kris Kuper Guard Bronco's, Chester Pitts Guard Texans, Julius Peppers (3-4 OLB), Dunta Robinson CB texans, Darren Sproles RB Chargers, Larry Foote MLB detroit (has 3-4 LB experience under spanos), Ryan Clark FS Steelers, Casey Hampton NT Steelers (probably will be re-signed or franchised), Kevin Walter WR texans (knows this offense), Brandon Marshall WR (see what we can get for him or if we can trade some of the players above for him--if shanny wants him), Antonio Bryant WR bucs (incase one or two of the other receivers are gone or resigned, plus Bruce Allen knows this guy), Mike Bell RB New Orleans

Draft:
1st pick: I want Okung because this will solve our OL(But we'll probably get Bradford)
2nd pick: Terrance Cody assuming we don't get Hampton
4th pick: Matt Tennant C Boston college (comparisons to Broncos all pro center Tom Nalen)
5th pick: Sydquan thompson CB Cal
7th pick: George Selvie DE/OLB USF
compensatory(assuming we get atleast one): Adam Ultaoski T texas

Re: This Offseason - BE THE OWNER!!!!!

Modest FA signings for depth issues at LB and the DBs for sure. A WR FA acquisition would be a good thing also. I am still not sold on our newbie Wrs turning out good. First two picks in the draft are linemen. Either the 3rd or 4th rd pick will be a QB. I like Stull, Kafka, and Lefevour. Lefevour would be the number 1 target of the 3, followed by Kafka, and Stull. Sheehan and Canfield could be in the mix as well, depends on how many teams go QB in the first 3 rounds. I would pick a 3rd linemen after the QB, followed by a LB, CB, and S in order of best player available in those positions(meaning if the best player available for round 5 for us is a LB we sign the LB). Trading down is tempting, but a first and second round linemen have great starter potential and that is what we desperately need if we are going to turn this thing around in say 2-3 seasons.

Agree that the title should be changed to: This Offseason- Be the GM/Coach!

I'm in favor of holding status quo in FA, but that's probably not happening. A bunch of Dollar-Value-Menu guys, but no big splash.

For the 4th pick, I'd try to trade back to ohhh..............say around 13th. 13 Seemed to work very well last year! I'd stack up on an O-Lineman in the 1st rounder, and again later.

Pike? I'd rather just take an OL then draft Pike. Nothing I've seen on him looks promising except for his height. No durability, arm strength, nor experience in a pro style offense. Heck he played in a spread offense and broke the 2,500 yard mark once and that was just barely. Colt Brenan is a much better option then Pike.

As for Bradford. You'll be eating crow by 2012.

trade JC, ARE, and Carter in a package deal, get 2nd, 3rd, 7th for the 2011 draft
release Clinton Portis
sign J. Norwood
change my D to 46.

get ready for the 2010-2011 season.

Dirtbag59 01-30-2010 06:56 PM

Re: This Offseason - BE THE OWNER!!!!!

Fine I'll do this as GM/Coach

1st - Bradford (QB Oklahoma)
2nd - Brown (T USC) or DuCasse (T UMASS) Basically the best available Tackle
4th - Mike Johnson (G Alabama)
5th - Jason Fox (T Miami)
7th - Blount (RB Oregon)

Sign Ben Hamilton
Look into signing Eugene Amano (C/G Titans)
Try to sign Chris Kuper if he isn't a RFA.
Sign Peyton Hillis (RB)
Bring in Daryn Colledge if he's granted a clean release by Green Bay.

Go into next season with JC as the starter unless Bradford beats him in camp.

On the line keep Edwin Williams, Kory Lichtensteiger, Levi Jones, Stephon Heyer, Casey Rabach, Dockery, and Chad Rinehart for camp, after that cut the worse of the bunch. Ironically a lot of cutting should be expected granted that I have us going into camp with as many as 13 or 14 lineman. End up keepign 10. Rinehart, Heyer, Fox, and even Rabach are most likely to get cut. Fox would go on the practice squad.

Bring in a few defensive free agents and plan on a defensively heavy draft in 2011.

Offensive Line Could Look Like This Italics denotes new player:
LT - 2nd Round Pick - Jones
LG - Dockery - Johnson
C - Rabach - Williams
RG - Hamilton or Kuper (preferably Kuper) - Lichtensteiger
RT - Colledge - Fox

Personally I really like the three backup guys on the interior of the O-Line to become starters in a year or two.

Thats basically all I have.

Re: This Offseason - BE THE OWNER!!!!!

I just dont understand why ppl wouldnt like Shanny bringing up Pike. He is very similar to Elway in alot of respects. The arm, slightly mobile, and very good vision and a smart guy. Only thing I can think of is him missing a year of starting at QB compared with Elway, but that is why he carries the clipboard and is learning the first year.

I think he could be the next Elway, although Bradford (With his glass shoulder holding up) could also be as well. Both are good options, but we could get Pike for alot cheaper, plus get a premier tackle for him for years to come. But both options are winners in my opinion. I guess I would just like to see the skins actually draft a QB, get him seasoned, turn over the reigns and actually have a winner. With our history at drafting bust QB's, I think that Shanny could be the coach to turn that trend around, and the physical specimen in Pike I think if he adds say 15-20 lbs, could be perfect!

Re: This Offseason - BE THE OWNER!!!!!

If I am the owner of the Skins, I realize that I have already hired a coach with Super Bowl rings and a GM who helped to assemble a team that won a Super Bowl. Give me two gold stars...

This offseason, I give those guys a budget figure and tell them not to exceed it. That figure includes everything from player salaries to costs of training camp to scouting to equipment to post-game buffets. I will demand that they call me any time they sign a free agent from some other team so I can keep a running list of my roster. I will also be sure to read the newspapers the day after the draft is over to see what new blood they got from the college ranks,

Once that budget figure is set, I go about my life trying to attend to my other business interests until Opening Day of the 2010 season whereupon I will be in my owners box - - if it is a home game - - or in the suite provided for the visiting owner - - if it is an away game.

My role would be to get the Hell out of the way of these two guys that I just hired and spent about $50M to bring to DC...

Like someone else mentioned earlier, if I'm the owner I admit I suck as a personnel guy, I leave it up to Allen and Shannahan while I go work on my golf game...

I get rid of the 400 level seats at FedEx field and replace them with an overhang like the old RFK Stadium...I cut back the clubhouse seats by half and replace them with GA seats to replace the ones that were lost by eliminating the nosebleeds...Finally I donate my owner's box to charity and go hang out in the stands with the rest of the fans al-la Mark Cuban...OH and I cut beer, food and ticket prices by 20%... :D

I also hire a traffic engineer to figure out the parking at Fed Ex field and eliminate paid parking.

i would start with the o- line.
tackle- draft pick
guard- Rinehart
center- Williams
guard- Dockery
tackle- free agent
T.E- i would trade either Cooley or Davis( which ever had better value) for a draft pick(s)
WR- Moss
Kelly
Thomas
RB- Portis
QB- Campbell( this would be his last)

defense
DE- Carter
Orakpo
DT- Haynesworth
Griffin( this would be his last)
LB- Macintosh
Fletcher
free agent( Dansby?)
CB- Rogers
Hall
safety- Landry( would be his last, unless greatly improved)
draft pick, or free agent
the kicking game would remain the same. with Gano and Smith.
KR- Hall, Thomas, and maybe Moss
and there would be rules. if you dont practice by Friday, you dont play

Re: This Offseason - BE THE OWNER!!!!!

Alright let's see. Assuming I'm the GM not owner...blah blah....

Cutting: ARE, rabach, smoot, wynn, phillip daniels, todd collins, samuels and randy thomas, cartwright, betts, griffin

Resigning: anthony montgomery, chris wilson, hunter smith, jason campbell, golston, levi jones(depth), lorenzo alexander, quinton ganther, mike williams (depth), reed doughty (special teams), mcintosh, yoder, and heyer (depth).

Try to trade moss for picks or cut him, and try to trade rogers for picks, or resign him at a reasonable deal.

I think there's a better chance of trading down from our 2nd rd pick than our 1st. That being said, here's what I'd like out of the draft:

1st - Berry. If he's gone, then okung, and if somehow both are gone then gerald mccoy (assuming suh's gone too). I like berry as the top talent in the draft, and we'd certainly be getting our money's worth by taking him. Okung's good, but not THAT much better than the rest of the tackles in the draft - likewise with the QBs. Drafting berry lets us move landry to SS, and could give us a spectacular FS for the next decade. With a top 5 pick, you have to go for best available, regardless of need.

2nd - trade down for a later second rounder and late third rounder (think 17th/18th in both 2nd and 3rd rounds). With the later second round pick take Charles Brown, OT, USC. Perfect fit for zone blocking scheme, and OT is clearly a big need

3rd - Tony Pike/Dan LeFevour. Both have decent arms and upsides, and could be developed by shanny.

4th - I like taking a CB here, specifically someone like akwasi owusu-ansah. Good size, speed, and the most important part: return skills. Would be a great special teams player for us, and we can use more depth at CB, especially with carlos rogers' status being questionable and getting rid of smoot.

5th - Jacob hickman, C, Nebraska. I really just can't stand casey rabach and want to see him gone. If we address center in FA (see below), then I like OT/OG/RB here

6th/7th - OT/OG/RB in both rounds

FA: I think our chief concerns to address in FA are LB, WR, and OL depth. One name I'd really really like to sign is Eugene Amano from the Titans. He's a great youngish center who can also play guard, and we could probably get him for a really good value. For LB, if we can get dansby for a decent price, I say we do it, so orakpo can move to DE. Even a slighty questionable price would be okay (deangelo hall deal-esque) Another good option would be merriman here. Then we need to find a WR in FA as well, whether it's kevin walter, antonio bryant, or brandon marshall (depending on ease of acquisition due to FA restrictions). I think we also sign peyton hillis from denver. Then we need to decide whether we're trying to be a 3-4 team or not - vince wilfork would deserve a long hard look if that is our long term goal. Lastly, perhaps address the kicking game by signing gostkowski; I'm unsure if gano is the long term answer, although I do like the guy and would like to give him a chance.

Lastly, perhaps address the kicking game by signing gostkowski; I'm unsure if gano is the long term answer, although I do like the guy and would like to give him a chance.
you do know that we don't have a 6th or 3rd round pick right?

My bad about the 6th rd pick, but that doesn't really change the plan...

If you are the owner, you can't sign Durant Brooks

Well, not being a smart ass but I would do what the majority of the owners do, and most of them are very succesful at it.

SIT BACK AND LET THE GM AND COACH HANDLE THE PLAYER/PERSONEL DECISSIONS.

Hazard the GM: Has a great ring to it :-)

OFFSEASON:

I WOULD SIGN(if they are cut, as rumored to be):

OG Ben Hamilton
OL Chris Kuper
OG Daryn Colledge
DE/OLB Jarvais Moss (very unlikely to be cut tho)
RB/FB Peyton Hillis
QB Jeff Garcia (if he is okay wit a backup job)

I WOULD CUT:
OL Ethan Albright (Since we signed Sundberg)
OL Mike Williams
C Casey Rabach (Since we signed Lichtensteiger)
DE Renaldo Wynn
(Possibly) WR Antwaan Randle El (if we can get a WR/KR in FA)
RB Rock Cartwright
RB Ladell Betts
RB Quinton Ganther

POSSIBLE TRADE: Make some sort of package deal sending Antwaan Randle El/Carlos Rogers/ to San Diego for Shawn Merriman if we cant get Jarvais Moss in FA. He didnt produce alot this year but next year will be the 2nd season after his knee surgery n should be much stronger. If we are switching to a 3-4, we need sum1 opposite Orakpo to cause problems and he has said that he would like to be back near the maryland area. We can tender Carlos for cheap then send him away so we get SUMTHING for him instead of just letting him go n get nothing.

DRAFT: (Im aware of our OLine needs, but this draft is loaded wit good OL so bear with me)

1st RND pick: Eric Berry FS Tennesse, if available. We need to get a starting FS so we can move Landry back to SS. No one was complaining about him when he played next to Sean Taylor R.I.P. in his regular position. If Berry is off the board, id trade down to later 1st round (get a 3rd rounder) and id pick up Taylor Mays. Once again, to move Landry back to his original spot. I realize Mays has slipped down boards wit inconsistent play but he has phenomenal physical tools and is coachable (plus i dont want him to end up on dallas) Last option: Russell Okung, yes he's good, but he isnt physical every play and isn't much better than other 1st round OT's

2nd RND pick: Charles Brown OT USC. If we dont go with Okung in the 1st round we HAVE TO grab the best tackle on the board here

3rd RND pick (if we traded back and got a 3rd RND pick): Jared Veldheer OT Hillsdale. Hes a SUPERB athlete, perfect for the zone blocking scheme. The man is 6'8" 315 lbs. and runs a 4.89 40. This would be a steal. I hope im the only one who uncovered this man and the redskins read this post lol.

4th RND pick: Jacoby Ford WR Clemson. The knock on him is he has small hands and can't keep the ball from his chest.....that hasn't stopped Desean Jackson, we all know 1st hand. Ford has ELITE speed as a sprinter and McCardell could really help tune his fundamentals. At the very least we get an upgrade at KR/PR

5th RND pick: John Jerry OG Mississippi or Devin Ross CB Arizona. Jerry is graded as a late 4th round early 5th round pick. If he slips to us, we gotta take him here. Would def get good value out of him. If not, id take CB Devin Ross, has good speed n we need to develop someone if we trade away or simply release carlos rogers.

7th RND pick:Travis Ivey DT Maryland. He wont set any speed records but @ 6'4" 340 he is quick for a big man and could play NT in our new 3-4 cuz i would put Haynesworth @ end.

TRAINING CAMP:

QB Situation: I would tender Jason Campbell one more year. Im not a Campbell fan but he has experience and would come cheap for us. (I have two main problems with him #1 hes not a good leader and he has the same expression on his face when he throws a pick as when he throws a TD #2, hes been sacked so many times, i think hes developed happy feet and feels pressure that isnt there AKA turning into David Carr). I would let him and Colt Brennan battle it out for the starting spot. i AM a Colt Brennan fan and i think the Shanahan's offensive scheme could benefit him nicely. Just think, a strong defense (fingers crossed), a restored running game, which helps our play action (ala what the jets did with Sanchez this year) Brennan has a winners mentality and a very quick release. Just needs to be coached on his reads better and i think the Shanahan's and Matt Lefleur will help with that. I think this is a much better option than using the 4th overall pick on a bradford or clausen. Why waste a pick when u havent tested whether the guys on the current roster can succeed in ur system? Plus add Jeff Garcia for sum veteran leadership if he would accept that.

RB Situation: I will give Clinton Portis one more year to prove he's not washed up but he looked very slow last year before the concussion. i would limit his carries and keep him fresh by mixing in Anthony Alridge and Peyton Hillis. Anthony Alridge is a cheaper version of a Darren Sproles or Jerious Norwood. And Remember, Mike Shanahan is the one who suggested Anthony Alridge to us sayin "he is the fastest player ive ever seen with a football in his hand" And if Bobby Turner can teach him to carry the ball high and tight, we could have a dangerous weapon on our hands. Peyton Hillis is just a "can-do" everything back.

This was fun to do and got me to really think about things. Lemme know what you agree and disagree with.

Re: This Offseason - BE THE OWNER!!!!!

I've posted some links on Veldheer. Good to see someone else likes him. He could be a steal but if he has a good combine he'll probably move up. Some scouts consider him the 3rd highest rated LT.
