how do we keep Gregg Williams???
seems obvious to me Gregg Williams is going to be the most sought after coach after this season. whats to prevent him from jetting like Marvin Lewis before him? i know unlike Lewis, he was a head coach before, but what he's done with this essentially no-name (backups) defense is near miraculous and impossible to ignore.
I really dont think hes gonna be that hot of a comodity as a head coach. One year remvoed from the disaster that was Buffalo, I dont even know if he would want to leave.
hope you're right. would be ideal if Gibbs groomed him as our coach after...
2 things will keep him here
17-31 record with Buffalo in 3 seasons He's very well paid here, I highly doubt anyone would be willing to outpay us for him And #3, who's to say he wants another HC job so soon? He's said that he's very happy coaching the D again, so who knows, maybe he really wants to stick with the D for now? |
i just hope he is here for a while, ideally, taking over as HC when Gibbs is done

I think he will hang around to boost his own ego a little bit and hopefully get a shot at the head spot when Joe leaves again. Maybe after working under Gibbs he will do a little better the second time around. |
In addition, Williams is just not a offensive coach. That was his problem in Buffalo. He still had like the number two ranked D there, but their offense sputtered up and down the feild, thats why they lost. The guy is flat out a defensive coach, while I think he will be a head coach again someday, I think, and hope it wont be for a few years. I would like to see him be our coach after Gibbs.
Plus, Gibbs probably stressed to him that this was a long term project, and asked if he could commit. I'm willing to bet the topic came up in the initial discussions.
Let's hope he's on board for at least the next 3 years as d coordinator. |
Well if he does take Gibbs place, lets just hope he does better than the last defensive coordinator that took Gibbs place.
well...look at the offense in buffalo now...under a STRICTLY offensive coach, the former OC of pittsburgh...
There is a bunch of coach's that will get jobs before GW. Those are Charlie Wiess, Romeo Crennel, Al Saunders, Jim Fassel, possibly even dan Reeves. I would be shocked if Williams is not here next year, even with the spectacular job he is doing.
What's the average salary of a head coach these days? 3 million¿ The only thing that will keep Williams from leaving will be a lack of desire to be a Head Coach on his part...sort of like Ray Rhodes. Then again Snyder could decide to pay him HC salary but I highly doubt it.
Who is realistically going to be needing a new HC next year? And just because Marv did up and leave last year that is because he was so desperate to get a HC job he would have taken anything offered. In fact the only reason he was our DC was because he WASNT offered a HC possition and Snyder offered him a bucket load of money.
The other interesting thing about Lewis is he didn't turn our D around . Kurt Shottenhiemer had a very good unit top 10 or top 5 ranking. Ray Rhodes however improved a unit ranked in the mid late 20s to number 4 in a year. He however is D co-ordinator in Seatle so there is no real mandate to say Greg is leaving unless he has been saying things in the press that i have not seen. |
i think GW makes more money than most HCs, he has players working well in his system already, and doesn't have the hassles a HC would have to deal with...
One thing that worries me is I've seen him walk away from Gibbs looking absolutely disgusted. Especially with clock management issues. Just hope there's not a rift between those two coaches.
Williams is an emotional guy, I wouldn't look too far into things. He's frustrated just like everyone else.
I think this issue was discussed between Gibbs and Williams in the beginning. After Marvin Lewis's departure, Snyder certainly wasn't letting that happen. Greg Blache has a lot to do with the success of the defense too. We need to keep this team together for another season and we're looking at a Superbowl contender.
He makes a ton of dough but most likely would get a competitive offer if he got one at all. I would think though that he'd would be low on people's list based on the Buffalo experience. I certainly think he'll get another shot down the road if he wants one but I don't think one year removed from Buffalo anyone will be jumping all over him. He may not want the chance anyways...who knows. Remember with Lewis too...the league is hot for getting minority coaches hired (which they should be) so Lewis was never going to be here long since he was such a respected coach. The NFL was going to figure out a way to get him a HC job. I think he has redeemed himself well in Cincy too. No one will be doing Gregg any favors since he already got his chance. Everyone seems enamroed with him being groomed as our next head coach but I am not sold in any way. He is GREAT def coordinator. Pettibone was a GREAT D coordinator....Norv was a GREAT o coordinator...there are plenty of guys who are great coordinators who make lousy head coaches. Williams already showed what he was capable of. Now the question is whether there were situational problems or was it a fundamental problem with his leadership. Who knows...not for me to judge since I wasn't there.

G. Williams is the best coach for us when Gibbs decides to depart. We don't need any more 'outsiders' heading the team. Could it be that the reason the Bills sucked back then just as they suck right now is because of Bledsoe? Bledsoe probably would have held NE back from winning it all before he was canned!
I don't think we have to worry about Williams leaving any time soon. He has said that he will be here as long as Gibbs....and if that holds true, I'd expect him to be his successor.
Now losing Blache or the other defensive assistants is another story... Blache has done wonders with Griffen and the rest of our "no-name D-line" and I could see another team trying to snatch him up as a "real" D coordinator. |
Odd

Yes, I've noticed that too. |

I haven't seen any of this since the first couple games. Gibbs hadn't done it in 12 years, so his game management skills were rusty, but he has gotten much better the last few games. |
GW may have sucked in buffalo cause the FO left him hamstrung (don't know, wasn't there), or wouldn't let him do what he felt needed to be done... the first thing he told gibbs was that he needed a list of concessions or it wasn't happening, and he got them...

1. A colleague tells me that Williams gets $1.8M per year as a base salary with some incentives. Winning the Super Bowl does not look like one he is going to cash in on this year but having the defense ranked in the top five in yards and ranked in the top five in scoring look as if they are within reach. So, let's say in round numbers he gets $2M this year as a coordinator. After a spin in Buffalo where he won an average of about 5 games a year, I don't think he's going to get a boatload of offers that dwarf $2M per. Please recall that the departed but hardly lamented Steve Spurrier won 5 games last year...
2. There are LOTS of defensive coordinators who have been REALLY good at their job who were less than wonderful as head coaches. So far, Gregg Williams falls in that category, so I am not salivating at the idea that he might be "being groomed" as the next head coach here. Consider please: A. Buddy Ryan B. Richie Pettibon c. Ray Rhodes D. Wade Phillips E. Vince Tobin F. Dick LeBeau 3. Yes, I do know that Bill Belichick was a defensive coordinator so you need not point it out here. Anhd please note that I did not put Tony Dungy on the list because I really don't think he was that great as a coordinator and I don't think he is just awful as a head coach either. 4. Greg Blache was the defensive coordinator for the Bears for a couple of years. The Bears defesne was mediocre with him there - nothing more than that. He got into a tussle with the Chicago press because they questioned him about why the Bears got so few sacks and shouldn't they blitz more. Blache said that "sacks were overrated" or something very close to that. He was a combination of a punching bag/laughing-stock after that. 5. Skins' coaches are paid waaay above the league norms. Williams is making $1,8M base salary. Mike Tice is HC in Minny and makes $1M this year with incentives. Del Rio in Jax makes $1.4M with incentives. Capers in Houston is making $1,8M this year (his 3rd year) with the Texans. If a coach leaves here, it won't be for the money; it will be for "something else". |
sportscurmudgeon, great post!
He's got a really sweet deal here and it looks like he really enjoys what he's doing. Plus I'm sure Gibbs discussed long term commitment to him before he signed on.
He seems to be the protoge. Gibbs has brought him along, made him asst. head coach, and I think, when Gibbs is done, GW will take over. As far as tis season goes, he has been the most productive coach on the sideline. Perhaps, Snyder sees that as HC potential.
I still have this feeling, and I have no basis for it it's just a gut feeling, that somehow Gibbs will have Russ Grimm on his staff maybe as early as next year and Grimm is going to be a possibble successor
Gibbs and Williams couldn't look or behave more differently on the sideline. different philosphies?
3 words: Assistant Head Coach.
I think a successful Skins franchise for the next several seasons and a Superbowl win (hopefully) will see Gibbs retire in 4-5 seasons and see Williams take the helm. But on the other hand I can't blame him for the offensive mess in Buffalo. It's still happening with an "offensive minded" coach. I think there are probably some off the field issues there AND in Oakland. |
Jack Kent Cooke always paid the Redskin ASSISTANT coaches more than some of the head coaches got on other teams......to keep Williams, Snyder just has to show him the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$....and promise Williams the head coaching job is his once Joe hangs it up for good.........
