Giants Release Pierce
Speaking of people who did not outlast London Fletcher:

Re: Giants Release Pierce
Pierce and Fletch as ILBs, anyone, anyone? LOL. Seriously though, what happened to the Giants D? They went from being the dominant unit of the team just a season ago to this. I wonder if they will cut Osi too?

Now you know that's not going to happen wishful thinking thou.
He was in the dog house towards the end of the season. Honestly, we wouldn't need him here, since we need other areas desperately. |

I wonder if they will cut Osi too?
I think they overvalue DL depth. It's important, for sure, but I could see them choosing not to move on from Osi, and starting him next year, even though he's their 3rd best DE. They also have no strong interior lineman, which makes timing their blitzes a lot harder when the opposing center (not Rabach though) can take their nose one on one and then they can't really overload one side.
It's a team that needs to find a middle linebacker, and Pierce isn't the explosive athlete he was from 2004-2007. They are essentially where we were defensively in 2006, talent-wise, but not nearly as fundamentally unsound. Their passing offense is going to keep them in contention for the division regardless, but they certainly are not the Cowboys or the Eagles. |
Re: Giants Release Pierce
I would welcome back AP anytime! Especially if we run a 3-4
|
Re: Giants Release Pierce
Pierce isn't that good in Pass coverage though, at least to my knowledge, I just remember him always getting beat by RB's or TE's, I do remember his pick 6 for us and he did have a pick six for the blue balls but still I've known him to be sketchy in pass coverage. So no pierce here for me, plus he has a bulging disk in his neck which is never good for a MLB.

Re: Giants Release Pierce
So the season of cutting begins (Donte Stallworth was too unsurprising to count).
|
Re: Giants Release Pierce
drum roll please.........vet minimum :benched:
|
Re: Giants Release Pierce
Wasn't he one of the ones who ran their mouth about the Skins? I'm not sure what would be better.... shunning him for running his mouth or bringing him back to watch him eat crow. :)

Is it possible it's because Spags left to coach Rams? |
Re: Giants Release Pierce
Non-football comment:
My son, 12 and a NYG fan :(, and I went to NYC for his 10th Bday. He wanted a jersey so bad, I got him Pierce because of his Redskins ties. He and I went to the Fedex MNF game this year with him wearing it. So this is a bummer to me, because of that kinda weird bonding thing that happens there. On the football side, If Pierce came back and had the same grudge toward the Giants as he did to us, I would be ok with it. But it's not gonna make or break my off-season glee. |
Re: Giants Release Pierce
Letting Pierce go to the Giants was the Skins' biggest mistake of the past decade (and that's saying a lot). He revamped their D and was the single biggest reason they won the Bowl.
Doghouse or not if they are letting him go his injury issues must be serious. I wish him the best of luck but we don't need him here, we have to get young quick. |
Re: Giants Release Pierce
Look for the Saints (Gregg Williams) or the Rams (Spags) to look at him.
|
Re: Giants Release Pierce
He's 32 and coming off a neck injury. I think it's also safe to say he's lost a step, perhaps a step he never had to begin with.
|
Re: Giants Release Pierce
Why on earth would we want to bring back an injured 31 year old 4-3 middle linebacker when we're switching to a 3-4 system? It makes absolutely no sense and would be about as stupid and short-sighted as 90% of the stuff we did when Vinny and Danny were running the show.
I said it in the other threads discussing Pierce and i'll repeat myself here. No thanks. Not even for the vet minimum in an uncapped year. |

Not even for the vet minimum in an uncapped year.
Well that's just silly, because that's basically saying we have 6 linebackers on our roster who are better than Antonio Pierce. It's just not true. With the cap no longer an issue, don't even bother talking about salary. It's a non-factor. He'd be an upgrade over what we have on the bench. But he shouldn't unseat Fletcher, he would have to earn a starting spot if he even can, and he shouldn't be counted on for very much. |

GW won't take him cuz he's the one who let him go. GW figured all we needed was Lemar Marshall and GW's defensive "genius". Cocky pr*ck killed our 2006 season, the year it should have all come together for Gibbs II. |

Re: Giants Release Pierce
Pierce wants to stay in the division and we need LB's...sounds good to me. Sign him to the vet min. with no signing bonus. If we pick up someone in the draft or FA who performs better, cut him.
|
Re: Giants Release Pierce
No thanks. He's 32, had a pretty serious neck injury last year and seems to have lost a step. This would be a step back. We need an infusion of youth on both sides of the ball.
HAIL |

HAIL
Not that I think we should pick him up, but how is picking up Pierce for the vet min any different than picking up some camp scrub? |

True. And to be fair it was GW that turned Pierce into a great player in the 1st place. |
Re: Giants Release Pierce
Some info on Pierce's release and his health. I'm sure someone will pick him up.

Re: Giants Release Pierce
I'm in agreement with everyone else, AP has been falling apart the last two seasons. It really points to the fact of how durable London Fletcher is. But I think Pierce can come back, but I think he'll continue to have some lingering health issues.

Re: Giants Release Pierce
Wouldn't totally surprise me to see Pierce return home to California and reunite with Greg Manusky in San Fran

Yeah and I believe the offer from the Skins was very much in line with what the Giants gave him, the Giants just gave him more $$ up front. So it's not like the Skins let him walk out the door without making an effort to keep him. |

That's the way I remember it. We cut Trotter and gave Pierce a chance to start. He did very well and we made a good offer after the season but he went for the most money. |

hmm...Saints have Johnathan Vilma Pro Bowl young MLB, Rams have James Laurinitas young good developing MLB. I don't think he'll go to either of those places. |
Re: Giants Release Pierce
We don't need him. They need to draft younger guys and bring in quality UDFAs and FAs to complete the youth movement of the team.

Then they got Fletcher :D It's ironic how Fletcher has seemingly outlasted Pierce, you know with Fletch being 3 years older. |

Not even for the vet minimum in an uncapped year.
At least people are starting to acknowledge the uncapped year when it comes to talking contracts. I've seen some people suggest the vet min like they're some type of stern negotiator (especially at ES). I swear people that suggest the vet min at this point for decent veterans should get the Gibbs head slap. [YT]MiLwHU4tHlc[/YT] By the way BHA this wasn't a slight at you. It's obvious you brought up the vet mininimum to prove a point. |

Re: Giants Release Pierce
32 and a bulging disk in the neck, not a great combo to get excited about. We have, what 5 draft picks? Draft a MLB.
|
Re: Giants Release Pierce
He's fat and he's lost more than a few steps. I doubt he'll ever be a player of significance anymore. As for him coming back here, I say hell no.
|
Re: Giants Release Pierce
He will probably be on the Patriots next year.
