Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
I like Taylor, but why add another 30 year old back?
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
Obviously he's not a long term answer but he's got a lot less mileage than your typical 30 year old back.
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
i would assume he wants to start. lets try to stay away from anyone that's 30 years old, or older
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
In an offseason where free agents are going to be limited, only shooting for guys younger than 30 might be pretty hard to pull off.
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
I think he could be good for us for a couple of years. It really depends on who we keep and who we draft but I do like him. I think he could be productive. He's a good pass blocker and a good receiver out of the backfield.
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
I wouldn't be against going after Taylor. Betts is probably done here coming off major knee surgery and Portis isn't a workhorse #1 anymore. At the very least Taylor would be a nice addition to compliment Portis and be the 3rd down back.

Yeah agreed. You just have to find a good mix of vets and younger guys. If a player has been a starter since day 1, then 30 years old is kind a red-flag type of benchmark. But also, some of the most productive players in the league are north of 30. |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
what is the difference between him and betts? no thanks!

Shanahan definitely likes to have a nice stable of capable running backs, and he's proven that they don't need to be big names to excel. Chester Taylor is still an very good player for the screen game. I wouldn't be opposed to him as part of a time share, but not a #1. Nowadays I think I prefer a committee approach to RB. |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
I like the combination of Taylor and Betts....doesn't anyone else?
Besides we could trade Portis potentially for a draft pick, that we would use to get some linemen..... |

Good point. People need to take a hard look at the RFAs and UFAs list for the uncapped year before they call for an all youth movement. Unfortunately, the young and talented players are going to be RFAs that would cost any team draft picks to acquire. |

The main difference is Betts is coming off knee surgery. |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
i would rather the skins draft a rb
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
I wouldnt care if all of RBs were let go, in that case I feel Taylor would be a nice addition as a no. 2 guy with a young horses at the 1 and 3 slot. BUT if Portis, Rock remain, I am not for adding more age to the corp of RBs.
I look at this offense and see the results the last couple years and really just shake my head. I see need EVERYWHERE. Taylor could bring a weapon. But I see the need for youth at the RB position more than anywhere on the offense. I hope Shanny can find a couple gems mid to late in the draft cause we need a youth infusion out of the backfield. I would not be surprised one bit to see 2 RBs drafted. |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
i would rather the skins draft a rb
Well they can do that and sign Chester Taylor. Of course this depends on what they want to do with Cartwright, Ganther, and Betts. |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
I wouldn't mind Chester Taylor on a short deal. He has been used sparringly so probably has a good amount left in the tank. Shanahan has also gone the veteran route on RB's before so it would not be out of character for them to target Taylor. I would prefer a draft pick RB over a free agent but with only like 5 picks most holes are going to need to be filled with free agents.

That's kind of my thinking too. Younger guys like LenDale White, Ronnie Brown, Laurence Maroney, and Jerious Norwood are going to likely be available and probably worth more of a look. |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
Why not check him out? Don't know what Betts will bring this year, if we're going to move Betts or Portis then I think that Taylor should definitely be brought in. I'd take Taylor over Betts no doubt. However I wouldn't make him my primary target in FA for RB.

I would like to check out Laurence Maroney...he seemed to get in the Belicheck doghouse imediately and never got out. They spread carries out so much that he was barely used it seems. He could have a lot of gas left in the tank. When he finally got a chance because of injuries this year he ran pretty well...but he also had some fumble issues. I love his upside though based on what we could probably sign him for. |

I think all these guys except Maroney are going to be RFAs though? It'd be great if they aren't tendered, but I would imagine someone like Ronnie Brown to be tendered or even re-signed to a longer deal with Miami. I'd be happy with any of these guys, but as long as they don't cost us picks. |
Reggie Bush Anyone?
Is Jerry interested in Bush?
8:09 AM ET Reggie Bush | Saints | Interested: Cowboys?, Redskins?, Lions?, Titans?, Seahawks?, 49ers? Top Email Options for Saints Try to re-work Reggie's deal -- possibly by tacking additional years onto it -- thereby lessening the hit in 2010. Find a trade partner, although would anyone give up a worthy package in exchange for Bush at his currently-promised salary? Pay that man his money. Source: Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune The Reggie Bush scenario continues to be captivating. It would appear that Bush is more valuable to Sean Payton and the Saints than he would be for some other teams; on the other hand, is he really worth his full-contracted rate of $8 million for 2010?Peter King has opined that the team will pay him his full $8 million instead of running the risk of losing him. If Bush somehow hits the market, the teams that could go after him include the Seahawks, 49ers, Titans and Lions. What about a trade? Some teams might scoff at the $8 million contracted salary, but the NFL's version of the Red Sox and Yankees would not. Based on owner Daniel Snyder's free-spending habits, we would be remiss to not include the Redskins in this trade group, and although he doesn't spend to the same degree as Snyder, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has proven to be a man that won't shy away based solely on a player's salary demands. Both teams could use the massive upgrade in the return game, and the Skins would appreciate the help in the backfield. As for the Seahawks, NFC West blogger Mike Sando doesn't think Bush's lofty price tag will keep them away: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ZOMG Oh no's not a playmaker for the Cowboys. How will we ever stop his east west running style!!!?!?!?? |

Main difference is that Betts is coming off MAJOR knee surgery and Taylor is not... |

I agree, I put my bid in for Taylor in the LT for Portis thread. If we decide to keep Portis and he's committed to doing the right thing, he and Taylor together could prove to be a formidable short term combination. It would not prove to be the ultimate solution at RB, and we could look to get a younger RB somewhere in the draft. |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
Chester + Clinton (part-time role) would be a great combo.
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
Chester Taylor has always been a complementary back, he has very very low mileage on him, where as Betts has started a lot more than Taylor, and has had more injuries (knee) than taylor.
I'd take Taylor, but not over spend something like a 3 year $10 million deal |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
Portis, Alridge and a drafted or undrafted Rookie as a three headed monster! HAIL!
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
Good point on Betts coming off major surgery, and Taylor not. I retract my earlier statement that Taylor isn't a better option than Betts
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
It would be a nice 3 headed monster Portis, Aldridge & Taylor.

thats pretty interesting man, honestly havent thought about him but you are right, he was kinda in the doghouse. was he injured early in the season then just never given back his full starting job? im also warming to the idea of chester taylor or willie parker (whom i think could do very well if our run scheme is like the broncos). what is the status of willie? outside chance he is a late roster cut casualty? |

I'm sure that will get him cut in a heart beat by Darth Hoody. Willie Parker will likely hit free agency. The question with him will be his durability, I think part of the reason why he lost out his starter role to Mendenhall was his health. |

I know he had a big goal line fumble |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
I wouldnt be against Taylor at all. I've always liked him as a player and as long as it wouldnt cost us big (which it probably wont) I dont mind.
|
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
He can be a stopgap to replace Betts since it will take a while to rehab both of his knees.

Even though Chester Taylor is awesome, especially on draw plays and catching the ball out of the backfield. RB has evolved into a young mans position. Gone are the days where old Veterans like Gerald Riggs and Otis Anderson can carry the load for you to the Superbowl. |

I'll never forget our SB season of 1991 when Riggs had less than 80 carries but had more TDs (11) than Byner and Ervins combined. |
Re: Chester Taylor anyone?
RB has always been a young man's position. Outside of a few exceptions most guys typically hit the wall at 30 or 31.

We should have a no starting running back policy. Get 2 or 3 good ones and split carries. Skins shouldn't give a crap who the starter is. What about Willie Parker? Where's the Willie Parker thread? Keep Portis and platoon him with one or two other backs. RBs are a dime a dozen. Don't need a great one to win the Super Bowl. See also Saints, Steelers (with Willie Parker), Colts, Patriots. Need a good, solid running game, not necessarily a great running back. |

Gone are the days when RBs even matter that much anymore, at least when it comes to playing in Super Bowls. Look at the last 10 Super Bowls, both the winners and the losers. Saints, Colts, Steelers (featuring one William Parker), Eagles, Seahawks, Patriots (did they even have any running backs?), Ravens, Raiders, Bears, Rams, Giants, Cardinals. Outside of Shaun Alexander and Marshall Faulk, these teams didn't have any all-world running backs that carried their teams to victory. Many platooned their backfields or at least got by with a solid enough running game to keep Defenses honest. Pair Clinton Portis with a Willie Parker or Chester Taylor and mix in a rookie or free agent and now you're cooking with gas. Just need an O line and a credible passing game to open up the running game. My philosophy on running backs is usually Young and Cheap! But if you have to pay Portis anyway and can get a proven complimentary back without breaking the bank, that will do as well. |
