Samuels Will Hold Noon Press Conference on Thursday to Announce Retirement

The date is not set in stone yet but it looks like it will be official before this time next week

Unsurprising yet still...dang.

One of the greatest of all Redskins linemen.

Too bad his career got cut short, he was still in his prime. Definitely a great Redskin and I hope he doesn't have any lasting health effects.

I hate to see it but I don't blame him one bit. He's financially set and he's still a young man. There's no need to ruin your health, you can't replace that. Smart decision if you ask me.

We could REALLY use a healthy Chris Samuels

I hope he can live a healthy life in retirement.

Very sad to see this, but I'm glad he's using caution and preventing a possible serious injury with long term effects. As Goat said, may he live a healthy life in retirement.

A smart move by Samuels. One of the all-time great Redskins. Thanks for everything Chris!

So I assume this means that right now he's not feeling better mentally?

Better to not risk it. CBS 9 just said they expect the press conf to be Thursday but also said it's not exact.

Well it's sad to see The Danny's very first pick hang it up. When his misses are always talked about it's nice that his very first was a damn good one. Thanks for the years Chris.

I thought Arrington was first?

HOF in my book, he always played his A game every week!! Never complained about the teams or qbs he had to protect lol .

You are right, Arrington was the 2nd overall pick in 2000 and Samuels was the 3rd overall pick in 2000. we had back to back picks that years due to draft trades the year before.

That's what you get for thinking. He was the holdout because he felt that he would've been drafted 2nd overall.

Huge props to Samuels. Was one real bright player in a decade of mediocrity. I don't know about HoF, but he better go on the Skins' Ring the day he is eligible. He is a class guy, who gave everything his body could, and did right by the Skins at every turn. He will be missed.

No one is suprised by this, but he is a great lineman who will be missed. Smart call on his part, thanks for everything Chris.

Ha, pretty much. I'll just stick to the JC threads, those are pretty much my wheelhouse.

Well then, it's good to see that Danny's second pick turned out to be a really good one!

Can't blame the guy for being concerned about his health. True 'skins like him are hard to find. Maybe we'll find some way for him to stick around in the organization.

He's doing the right thing. He's going to be missed as a decade cornerstone at the LT position. At least Vinny had enough sense to draft him, Bruce Allen must now draft his replacement......Chris Samuels has been agreat Redskin.

Chris Samuels, Walter Jones, Junior Seau (again) and Kurt Warner all retiring this year. Wow

It's going to be strange to see Chris Samuels go. I've been a big fan of his ever since we selected him 3rd overall, after LaVar.

He was a great Redskin who had a fantastic career. I wish him nothing but the best and I think he's doing the right thing. His health is far more important than his career.

Does anyone know if we are going to sign Levi Jones

I'll miss Chris, but at the same time this needs to be done. He's a great player. Does anyone know how this will work with the cap and a retired player, like even if the cap comes back.

CRedskinsRule 03-01-2010 03:15 PM

re: Samuels Will Hold Noon Press Conference on Thursday to Announce Retirement

I assume that's why they are waiting, once the cap goes away he won't affect us, even if the cap comes back. Same with Joey Porter in Mia. They have to wait till the 5th, but then hes gone.

Not surprising but none the less still sad to see. He is a TRUE Redskin if you ask me.

I think the press conference will be on Thursday at Noon (at least I think that's what I heard)

And now with the Bears releasing Pace, he might retire as well. So three of the best LTs of the best decade could all be leaving the sport at the same time

wait... u can draft a top 4 LT to anchor your line and still have a decade of mediocrity?

Longtimefan 03-01-2010 10:01 PM

re: Samuels Will Hold Noon Press Conference on Thursday to Announce Retirement

Chris had the honor of doing something that may be considered rare, in his ten year career with the Redskins he had the distinction of blocking for ten different QB's.

Hope he enjoys retirement as much as I am....He'll be missed.

Is this supposed to make a case for the draft QB crowd and the resulting hidden premise that having a good QB means not a stud LT is not necessary?

GusFrerotte 03-01-2010 10:49 PM

re: Samuels Will Hold Noon Press Conference on Thursday to Announce Retirement

I wish him the best. He is up there with the Hogs, Lachey, Tre, and the real old timer Skin linemen. Since he is young, he has a much better shot at not having major issues as he gets older, as long as he loses weight.

I am not sure that is the case, since we drafted 2 QBs in the first round within that decade, so you can't fault the FO for not trying. Spurrier destroyed Ramsey, then Gibbs cut him, then Gibbs gets JC. The franchise went to shit when Dan showed Marty the door. Marty turned it around with Tony Banks for godsake, so you need more than a great QB to win. You could make the same case as Norv's late mid season firing as the turning point also. Norv still had an above .500 record and could still have made a playoff run. But we all know what started it all, when we thought the great Heath Schuler was going to be the shit and he was a total bust. That is what scares me about us gambling on Bradford. THese overhyped QBs are the ones that fail to produce most of the time. I like that Lefevour and Kafka did pretty well in the combine.

I'm really glad he's not coming back. Not that I wouldnt love Chris Samuels on the feild, but the thought of him risking the rest of his life is just crazy. He's thirty something, has all the money he could ask for... just live life with your family, Chris. You deserve it....Thanks for everything.
