Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
Competition Committee will propose killing plays when ball carrier loses helmet | ProFootballTalk.com
I don't know.. I get it, but I don't like it Competition Committee will propose "modified sudden death" for overtime | ProFootballTalk.com
The new rule, as previously reported by many, will allow the team that receives the kickoff to start overtime to win the game only by scoring a touchdown. At that point, the game would end without the other team getting the ball -- and without an extra point being attempted. If the team that receives the kickoff scores a field goal, the other team would then get the ball. A field goal by the other team would then extend the game, making it truly sudden death. Failure to score at all would end the game, as would a touchdown by the team that kicked off to start overtime.
I say you need to attempt the extra point.. just in case one of them gets it blocked/botched snap, etc |
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
also, maybe protecting the long snapper by preventing anyone from lining up in his frame
Snappers could get some protection, too | ProFootballTalk.com and more protection for defenseless guys.. which is dumb because it will become even more subjective Defenseless players will be further protected from blows to the head | ProFootballTalk.com |
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
I like the rule of ending play when the helmet comes off.
Not only does it protect the safety of the players, as something is bound to happen, but it also will force them to tie on their helmets tighter. Way too many loose helmets these days. |
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
Helmet rule is stupid but will likely pass since they're suddenly so concerned with craniums. I love when a RB is fighting for yards even if the helmet comes off...they're usually great plays and I've never seen an injury on a play like that. They KNOW it's a violent sport when they signed up at age 10.
OT rule would be OK if extra points attemped as you said...could miss or be blocked. |

Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
I wish they would just stop with the OT proposals, leave it alone.
As far as ending the play when a helmet comes off I definitely think that's a good idea. A no-brainer... ha! |
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
I dont like any of sissy type rules. It takes way to much away from the tradition and history of football.
Im okay with the OT rule, but id rather them go to a college type format or just do away with OT all together. I know a lot of people dont like the college format because it will inflate the scores and mess up records and stuff like that, but i think fair competition is more important. |
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
forget college format
trade turns but kickoffs on each |
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
College OT is not right for professional football. One because of the stats, but more so because in professional football you have to drive the football the length of the field, and test all 3 phases of the game. You don't get a full range of play calling/defensive sets starting at the 20(?).
I like the proposed change and hope they implement it, but I doubt they will. |

My point said more honestly. :D |
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
More stuff!
1. The do-over rule adopted last season for balls that strike the mammoth video board hovering over the floor of Cowboys Stadium, known here and elsewhere as "Jumbotronicus," will be proposed as a permanent fix for the potential problem, which never occurred in eight regular-season games or in the postseason contest played there. 2. Dead ball fouls occurring at the end of the first half and the fourth quarter would carry over to the third quarter and overtime, respectively. 3. Instant replay would be used to review game-clock questions on the last play of the second and fourth quarters (and presumably overtime). This rule was adopted by the NFL for the 2009 postseason. 4. The player numbering rules would be modified to acknowledge the fact that many linebackers with numbers in the 50s play defensive end in a 3-4 scheme. 5. In the final minute of the game (and presumably the half), a 10-second runoff would apply when a play is reversed via replay in a way that makes the final outcome a situation in which the clock would have continued to run. 6. The Colts and the Cowboys would be required to declare the window and curtain configurations at their stadiums 90 minutes before kickoff, the same rule that applied to whether a retractable roof will be open or closed.
"Jumbtronicus" and other issues will be on the agenda next week | ProFootballTalk.com |

I thought that football was a blood sport? Why do they have to sissify every GD thing?

Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
The league is going overboard with regard to head injuries but honestly it's something that's long overdue.
|
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
I think it would be difficult to spot the ball if the dude's helmet falls off just before he is down.

Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
No problem with the helmet rule.
Leave OT alone. As I've said before, if you didn't play well enough to win in regulation, you don't have a damn thing to whine about. |

Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
Killing plays when ball carrier loses helmet? Are you kidding me? That sounds retarded. If a player wants to get extra yardage let him.
Oh no, wait, you really didn't score a touchdown because your helmet was off. |

if the ball is in the air then there's no ball carrier |
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
Here's another hypothetical:
Adrian Peterson rams helmets with a random FS, and he fumbles the football AND loses his helmet at the same time. What's a ref to do? |

so kick it off and play match-it :)
Forget sudden death and bring back the tie game, it will encourage teams to play harder to prevent ties because of the playoff implications involved. |

Sorry, I did not read the rule, I did not see 'ball carrier' part. I thought they were saying anyone on the field loses his helmet. But SirClintonPortis came up with one of several possible scenarios that could make this rule difficult. The first time it is applied on a game winning/changing play like a 4th and goal there will be controversy. |

Exhibit A on why I'm against the helmet rule:
YouTube - Witten Loses Helmet and still runs |
Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
we need to be keeping the Cowboys OUT of scoring position
PASS THE RULE! |
we need to be keeping the Cowboys OUT of scoring position

Re: Competition Committee proposals: end play when ball carrier's helmet comes off & sudden death overtime
I'm for the overtime rule. It's innovative, gives both teams a fair opportunity to win. A high percentage of the time, the team that wins the coin flip, wins the overtime. A coin flip should not decide a game.
I'm against the helmet rule. The rules committee has gone too far to water down the sport. Football is a gladiator sport. There are too many rules that take away the physical aspect of football. If they want a no contact sport, then give the guys flags and lets play flag football. Deacon Jones is probably rolling over in his grave, you can't club a quarterback in the head. Jack Tatum cannot believe that you can no longer clothes line a guy or bump and run. What a pussy sport! |

The sport is physical and dangerous enough as it is, for those saying that it's become watered down or sissifed, I would love to you see guys step on the field for even one play. |

Vactor said when Vince Lombardi was coach here he actually challenged a fan to take the field to demonstrate what he perceived to be his worth, it was in short order the fan soon realized that just some of the drills were more than a notion......which quickly prompted a change of heart. |

I'm against people getting hit in the head, unless they're in the NFL.
I'm against people dying in automobile accidents unless it's in NASCAR. I'm against people giving their bodies over to drugs and alcohol, unless they're musicians. C'mon? Are you going to tell me that Charlie Daniels is good without booze, or that Lennon was better off without smack? There's always somebody trying to be a mommy. |
