Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Would you make that trade?
From Profootballtalk: Time is running out for teams to sign restricted free agent Ravens tackle Jared Gaither to an offer sheet, but he may be available for less than his first round tender. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, citing two Ravens sources, said Monday an offer of a "high second round" pick would get a team's foot in the door. La Canfora suggests the Redskins as a possibility. If Washington didn't draft a tackle in the first round, they could potentially send their second round pick for Gaither. There would be no April 15 deadline to sign Gaither to an offer sheet because it would be a straight trade. By all accounts, Gaither played like a quality starting left tackle last year. That's why it's surprising Baltimore seems so open to moving him. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Seems fishy. There must be more details to the situation. BAL has been great about scouting personnel but, they're not immune from making mistakes.
|
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
I wouldn't make this trade before we were on the clock in round 2. That way we could compare him to whatever OT is on the board there.
|
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
I would do it in a sec. He just turned 24, i guess why he had to go in the supplemental draft. I also feel like i remember hearing he was a Redskins fan as a kid.
The only bad thing ive heard about him, is that hes supposed to be a little slower then most o-line guys or football players in general. So if you do do it soon so he can start practicing and get him a tutor while hes learning the play book. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
According to Scouts Inc, Gaither would fit more in a power blocking scheme, rather than Shanny's zone block. At 340 pounds it sort of makes sense. I guess Baltimore has the luxury of getting rid of one of their talented tackles, and given needs at getting some youth at the WR position and just about everywhere on defense, it would make sense. Besides, I would say that they didn't draft Oher to keep him on the right side.
I guess this would be a way to get Bradford and a starting quality tackle, if Shanny feels that Gaither would fit in our line (scheme-wise). Although, I would get him for a second rounder even if we trade down. Although I would defer to those that know more than I do, would Gaither be better than any 2nd rounder tackle? My gut says yes. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
I would make that move. I would like a lower pick back, though.

Yea, that's a good call. I wonder if he'll still be available at that point? |

There. I clarified your statement. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
sure, we need someone for LT. i dont care if he fits the zbs or not, we need guys that can keep any qb we start upright. it certainly opens up our options at 4......
|
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
If they think that he'd fit well I'd be all for it if someone doesn't drop to us in the 2nd.

Agree with this. Plus I'm not even sure Gaither fits what we need. And from what I understand he basically needs a round the clock babysitter to get him to practice, keep him alert during film sessions...do we need someone like that really? Are we trying to go with an all Terps OL or something? |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
I would be skeptical about anything JLC says even if he told me the sky was blue.

Agreed. We should just draft our own tackles. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Draft Okung...and bring in a young hungry guy who will be molded into a true "Redskin" by Shanahan...instead of guy the ravens dont want.......BUT if we make the mistake of drafting a QB @ 4......snatch him up pronto!!!

Its black right now so your right to question him. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Jared Gaither is far better than any OT we could hope to get between rounds 2-7
Hes a proven player thats still young, and hes shown the ability to hold down the left side. MAke the trade, a 2nd rounder for him is a STEAL......... |

From what I understand, that's why the Ravens want to trade him. Another talented underachiever. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
How can you call a 5th round pick who has started for the last 2 years an underachiever?

Because for his talents he should have been a higher pick than 5th round in the supplemental draft? That said though, he really only started playing football his last year of high school. |

Pretty easily actually. When someone has that much talent and doesn't want to work to get better or fulfill those talents, I call that an underachiever. What do you call it? |

This quote, plus the one above saying the guy is "slow." Does he have Down's Syndrome or something? |

Not sure of their depth situation but the fact the Ravens are willing to let a young lineman get away like this is telling. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
All I've read are some vague accusations about him not being keen on practice at college and not being up to scratch with his grades. I've not seen any criticism of his actual play, either at college level or in the pros.
I've also read that the Ravens would be very happy to keep him but they do have a ready-made replacement for him in Oher. |

Ugh...forget it then. I am out... I thought it was fishy why they didn't just want to pay him...you can never have to many good OT's. Thats why I guess. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
I'd take him...and another OT at #4. We'd be set.

listening to ravens radio, he has problems showing up and working hard. the ravens really like him, i think i heard he was rated the no 6 tackle last year, gave up one sack last year with a bad arm. ravens sources said while they really like gaither but they think he has hit his wall of potential and what you see now is what you will get in the future. they think oher has unlimited upside. another reason the ravens want to move him is b/c he will be an UFA next year and the ravens dont want to have to pay him starting top tier LT money next year, then have to give out another big top tier LT contract to oher a year or two later. basically they dont want 2 big money contracts for the same LT position. of the two, they would prefer oher long term. the ravens/ozzie seem to not like putting alot of money is one position. last year bart scott walked b/c they paid t-sizzle and ray lewis. but i dont think he will fit in the ZBS for us. hes the tallest guy in the nfl, has work ethic/concertration issues. i would wait to see whose available at our 2nd round pick before talking a great but ill-fiting LT just for the sake of getting a LT. |

they drafted him with a 5th round pick and hes been a 3 year starter. Now they might get a first or high second. This guy was not a mistake. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
He is clearly better than anyone on our current roster. But I am hearing the same things OTM mentions about him. If we draft a LT at 4 and then sign Gaither to a low money long term contract with the understanding that he will be a RT, I wouldn't lambast the team.
Given his work ethic issues, just not sure he is a guy I would want on the team. For all the reasons mentioned by OTM and SS, I definitely don't want him as our long term LT. Again, yes he is better than anyone we've got - but is he better than anyone we could potentially get in the draft? Does he fit in Shanny's system? Can we get him for a reasonable RT salary long term? I think the answers to all these questions are "no", so I wouldn't make the trade. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Baltimore is one of the best run teams in the NFL. If they're trying to get rid of this guy then something is up. He's better than anyone we have but we don't need anymore guys that don't want to practice/ poor work habits. Let's draft our own o-linemen and let the new staff mold him.

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
The reason draft picks are valuable is because you can get players for cheap. The Ravens had Casey Rabach, Jason Brown, Jared Gaither, all players the Redskins seem to be coveting, and all players that were taken with low draft picks.
We should do the same. We should only trade for established players if they are the missing piece, not to fill random holes. For example, I believe the Vikings traded some pretty premium draft picks for Jared Allen... But they already had a solid defensive line that was lacking the pass-rushing monster. If we had a solid offensive line and just needed a LT, I'd be all for it. But that's not the case here. |

We've got Stephon Heyer, Mike Williams and Casey Rabach!!! 3 potential pro bowlers. :-) |

if the guy is better then anyone we have, who cares how he practices? but i agree with the ravens being well run. maybe that should raise some flags

The funny thing is, you know how some people say the quarterback gets too much credit and also too much blame? I think the same applies even moreso to the offensive line. If we were to have Peyton Manning on our team, I wouldn't be surprised to see those guys earn Pro Bowl berths. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
man i just dont' see this happening...it would be pretty nice though. Isn't this guy their anchor? Like their best OLineman? I'm kind of behind on news other than Redskins :0

These guys are elite QBs in their primes. Any other QB, needs good offensive line play, hell how do you think Brett Favre was injury free throughout the season? |

Our offensive line will improve so much guys! look at that Saints vs. Redskins game, why did our team click all of a sudden? Because we got the early lead and had something to fight for. That's why we have coaches to help motivate every player and for this to happen game 1 through 16. Don't compare last year to this year just yet, these guys will be hungry and a guy like Jared Gaither would help a lot but not as much as potentially hitting a hungry young LT who will listen to everything our coaches have to say. But then again my guess is as good as anyone's right |

I don't think one needs to be an elite QB to make your offensive line look good. I don't know how you rank all the other quarterbacks but another example that comes to mind is Tony Romo and Bledsoe/Johnson. Their freaking center made the Pro Bowl after that. |

Yeah... But do you think their center deserved to be a Pro Bowler, haha. He just road the coattails of Tony Romo, in my opinion. |
