Call me a blind optimist but...

Does anyone realize that right now at 3-5 the Redskins are just 2 games back in the wildcard? The Giants are the only non division leader with a winning record at 5-3. The rest of the NFC is just as pathetic as we've been. The following teams are at 4-4, St. Louis, Detroit, Green Bay. The Cowboys, Saints, Bucs, Bears and Cardinals are also 3-5. We were a bad call away from beating the Packers & Cowboys and a Rod Gardner catch away from beating the Giants who lost to the Bears today. Our offense is still a long way from good, but if the D keeps it up and the special teams keep playing well then at least we can maybe steal a couple games and make a late push.

LadyT 11-07-2004 08:25 PM

After the next 2 games, assuming Brunell starts, we will be 3-7 and basically out of it once and for all.

SmootSmack 11-07-2004 08:26 PM
After the next 2 games, assuming Brunell starts, we will be 3-7 and basically out of it once and for all.
I think we can easily beat the Bengals next week.

ZackMills 11-07-2004 10:28 PM

Just because Gibbie lead us to a win this week, don't get your hopes up.
After the next 2 games, assuming Brunell starts, we will be 3-7 and basically out of it once and for all.
I think we'll beat Cincinati. They are not nearly as good as the win they put up today. I'm pretty confidnent we will beat them and be 4-5 and I'll be getting excited. I'm not going to say pull this guy or start this guy, but if we dont have a passing game before the Phi/Pit/NYG/Phi stretch, we will be 0-4. I'll tell you waht, if we have a passing game we have a really good shot against philly. They have a poor run defense, and our defense can shut down their offense within reason, and hold them to a low # of points ( I'm thinking like 20 ). If we have a passing game to open up our offense I really like our chances to split with them. Now Pittsburgh is REALLY good, so we'll see there. The Giants are on again off again, I think we can beat them too. If we dont get a passing offense **cough cough start Ramsey cough cough ** then we will get rolled.

EEich 11-07-2004 10:41 PM

Easily? Have you watched a single game this year?
I think we can easily beat the Bengals next week.
ZackMills 11-07-2004 10:43 PM

They just beat the Cowboys. Remind me, did we beat the Cowboys this year?

Daseal 11-07-2004 10:52 PM

Guys, I hate to say it but we'll have a time keeping Chad Johnson in check. See what happened to Denver when they tried to man up on C Johnson? If we get some hits on Palmer we'll be alright. I think it'll be a good game and Johnson is the X factor. The play-offs are not unreal if we wen 2/3rd of our remaining games.

itvnetop 11-07-2004 11:02 PM

palmer was easily rattled while I was at SC. he's definitely gotten better, but if you put him on his back enough, he'll start overthrowing his receivers.

we should contain rudi johnson, so it's up to carson to beat us with his arm.

Daseal 11-07-2004 11:03 PM

Yeah, Im not saying it's an impossible task. I just think it will be interesting to watch.

Gmanc711 11-07-2004 11:20 PM
They just beat the Cowboys. Remind me, did we beat the Cowboys this year?
The score might not have showed it... but I'm pretty sure we beat the cowboys.
Yeah, Im not saying it's an impossible task. I just think it will be interesting to watch.
oh totally agree... to put a meter on how good chad johnson is, look at what he did to champ. and look at what champ did to houston's andre johnson today.

chad is a top receiver in this league no doubt.

SmootSmack 11-08-2004 12:06 AM
Easily? Have you watched a single game this year?
Ok, so "easily" was a poor choice of words. What I meant to say was that it don't think it's a stretch to say we could beat the Bengals. Not that we'd hand their asses to them on a platter just that I could easily see us beating them as opposed to seeing us beat them easily. That make any sense?

JWsleep 11-08-2004 01:10 AM

The problem is our schedule gets tough:

we play Philly twice, the Steelers at Heinz field, the vikes, the roids in Dallas. That's five games that we will not, unless things change incredibly, be favored to win.

We also play the gints at home, and we tend to play down to their level and suck.

THen there's cincy, who looks better, and thats not a surprise, really, given their coach.

And then there's the niners.

Look, if our passing offense somehow comes to life (read: Ramsey), we could get some of the tough ones. We've got the D, specials are looking better, and we can run the ball. But if we can't pass, it ain't gonna happen.

aehs77 11-08-2004 01:17 AM

running game will continue to improve and as gibbs and buges continue to work in more zone blocking and defense that is number one with half the roster out will get their star back in a few weeks.

offiss 11-08-2004 03:55 AM

So long as Brunell is QB we will go no where, who one today's game? Defense and special team's, Portis had to throw our only TD pass which was set up by Thrashes return, once in a while you get a win like this but it aint happening every week especially when we play playoff caliber team's, if the switch isn't made we will be singing the blues in the upcoming week's about the one we let get away, I do think though Gibb's is starting to warm up to the idea of a QB change, almost 150yds. rushing by Portis, no sack's, decent protection, and Portis show's that reciever's are open you just have to throw it properly, I think Gibb's will be looking long and hard this week at narrowing down our problem's to Brunell, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Ramsey is taking half the snap's this week and probably will see action in the second half of the Bengal game.

Great point Paintrain. We could easily be 5-3. The defense has been uncanny all year long and now the special teams are shaping up as stellar. It is only a matter of time when our offense starts to gel. It is conceivable that even for this year we could make the playoffs. I am mainly concerned that get ourselves in a real groove by the end of the year, working on all cylinders as best as possible.

I look for us to pick up another win against Cincy, and maybe we will have some surprises in store for the Eagles and upset them.

ZackMills 11-08-2004 02:50 PM

I was always under the impression that defense wins champsionships...unless you have an old, stubborn head coach who won't change with the times (see JoePa and Gibbie) :cussing:

MTK 11-08-2004 02:53 PM

There's no comparing Paterno and Gibbs as far as age.

Paterno is pushing 80, isn't he? Now that's an old man.

Gibbs isn't even the oldest coach in the NFL. So let's get off the old man stuff and show the guy a little respect.

You cannot deny that he is an older coach and that he is stubborn in his ways, which will be his downfall. And as far as respect goes, he didn't wipe by buttocks when I was young, therefore, he gets no respect from me until he proves to me he can win again. I don't care if he got 3 SBs and is in the HOF...what have you done for me lately Gibbie, thats what I want.

heybigstar 11-08-2004 04:12 PM

Im skeptical about Lavar's return .. will he be back for our Pennsylvania road trip?
probably not ... i am excited to watch him play in a system wear he doesnt have to shoulder the responsibility and can roam free and use his athleticism to raise havoc.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Lavar do anything he can to be ready for the Pittsburgh game. He's from the area and the last time he played there was during the Terry 'Robinski' era so he didn't it wasn't a good time. Not that this one may be much better, but it could mean more than that game did.

What do you mean blind faith?

Also, I think Paintrain pointed out on another thread that the playoffs really aren't a long shot when you look at the records of non division leaders in the NFC

 We are 3-5, a bad team with a bad QB and a stubborn old coach. We will not make the playoffs. And by blind faith you are not watching the games, seeings that Gibbie can't do it anymore and relying on his past.

Eleven out of the 16 teams in the NFC are between 5-3 and 3-5, and if Indy wins tonight, that will make it 12. What does that mean? Parity is in full swing and who makes the playoffs is still totally up in the air. If the Skins can manage to climb to .500 within the next 2, or even the next 4 games, anything's possible. I've thought all along that Philly peaked too early, and they look a lot more "human" than they did the first 4-5 games of the season. The Giants got a big confidence boost, thanks to us, but they are starting to struggle (they lost to the Bears?!?!), as are the Cowroids. The NFC South and West are up for grabs (minus the 1-7 Niners and Panthers), and especially if the Vikings lose tonight, so is the North. This means the Skins still can control their own destiny by starting to win more of these close games....and finding a way to put up some points would help too! ;)
Put in Ramsey!!!!

I agree that the season is a bit shakey at this moment, but i do think that we can use the bengal game as a "make or break" game. I also think that Brunell needs to sit back and relize that he needs to do something or sit down, it is not fair to the rest of the team. Brunell potentially can be a good QB. He looks like he isn't comfortable in the offense. Gibbs did the right thing in going out and getting him, the price might have not been so good, but hopefully Ramsey can at least learn something from him.

WERE A BAD TEAM???? We have the best defense in the league, arguably the best running back in the league. We are ONE player away from being a domanite team, and we are 3 BS calls away from being 5-3. Dont even try to say this is a bad team. The only thing that I'm reluctant to be optomistic on is our schedule, we have to put together three really good games against Philly(2) and Pittsburgh. Other than that I think we are a good team, with a poor qb.

AnonEmouse 11-08-2004 07:17 PM

I had to watch the Steelers game last night (UK TV). Anyone else catch it?

Basically, the Steelers ran all over the Eagles and Roth did enough to ensure they were out of it by half time. Bettis and Staley (assuming he's fit) will be tough to defend, and they have a passing game (this kid looks the real deal!).

They stuffed the Eagles run and put almost constant pressure on McNabb. Looks like they have good balance overall and their ST ain't too shabby either. They showed everyone how to beat the Eagles, but you definitely need a passing game to do it. :(

your too optimistic. stop complaining about "BS" calls. they happen. they happen for the good and for the bad, yet we never complain about when they benefit us. :oink:
