McNabb excited about TE opportunities
“The success Houston had last year with (tight end) Owen Daniels before he got hurt is something that we’d like to do in this offense, as well as what Dallas does with Witten,” McNabb told reporters during the Redskins’ mini-camp.
Good things coming for Cooley and Davis. |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
You betcha. Could be Cooley's best year yet. And Davis will do some serious damage.
|
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
We will be very competitive this year.
HTTR. |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
Sounds like we are taking the lead in the off season!
|
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
I hate to revisit this subject since I know it's not happening, but it would have been nice to traded cooley. Davis is so sick! I just dont know how we would use both. Although having a backup of that caliber is silly!

Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
Fred Cooley is set to have a big year.

oh we're going gossip Davley? Coolis? |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
Ya know, last yr it was reported the Skins were going to figure out a way to utilize both TE's and everyone got excited. In my humble opinion... Zorn either did a terrible job trying to do this game plan or it was JC not trusting anyone but Moss and Cooley. Maybe it was both cause after Cooley went down ARE stepped up, Davis stepped up, Thomas saw more passes, etc.
I so want to believe both Shanahan's will figure out a way to use our Two TE sets to it's best advantage. I had wonderful pictures in my mind of Cooley being flanked wide to take advantage of the smaller DB's, or both Davis and Cooley going out for passes creating a mismatch with the opponents back field. It never happened. I'm guessing the Shanahans will figure this out and if nothing else make the other teams wonder which TE is blocking and which is running a route on any given play. |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
Zorn had two TE sets?
Unless we're talking goal line/short yardage, I never saw 'em. |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
Zorn hated two TE sets he rarely used them and the mentality seemed to be at least before Cooley got hurt was the use of a two TE set would come about more of necessity (JC is on his back too much we need to block for him). So they would trot Sellars or Yoder out there to lock but two TE receiving sets was something they used when they were on the goaline and it was a rare occasion, it really only happened when the Shermans took over playcalling and then Yodes caught a couple, Davis had a couple but only goaline stuff.
Zorn had two TE sets?
Unless we're talking goal line/short yardage, I never saw 'em.
yup. didn't cooley say they only ran like 7 pass plays last year? seriously, zorn was a complete joke. I certainly think Shanahan and McNabb will find a way to get his playmakers the ball. who those playmakers end up being, we'll have to see. |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
IF our O-line re.....tool is at least somewhat successful, this year could be a lot of fun.
If NOT.....Katy bar the door? |

He has a total of 51 catches and 6 TDs and those are sick numbers. OK |

And Santana Moss said that the Giants DBs were calling out our WRs routes (correctly) on most plays the second time we played them. I can't find the quote but he did go on to say that it does happen a few times a game but the Giants knew every play before it was run. I would think it would be safe to say that at least the teams in our division knew what we were doing on most snaps. Even on some of our more genius trick plays. |

You have to consider most of his numbers came in just 9 starts. |

we should trade cooley for a 3rd round pick!!!!!

Davis showed a lot of potential once he got the chance to start. You watched the games didn't you? |

The only one that threw them off was the swinging gate it seems. Well, at first anyways. |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
Fred Davis is about to be the new Laddell Betts. Starter goes down in a lost cause season and the back up plays lights out in a limited number of starts. I wouldn't be surprised if Davis was mediocre for the next few years.

All this based on what? Is it that hard to believe that a guy ranked as one of the best WR prospects out of HS that converts to TE and wins the Mackey Award in an impressive fashion could actually turn out good? |
Davis showed a lot of potential once he got the chance to start. You watched the games didn't you?
#1- Cooley is a proven still young player. #2- He's a pro bowler. #3- Davis did show potential, even though he only had to learn 7 plays. I'd rather be in the position have having to figure out who should be the starter vs. scratching my head wondering who's good enough to start. All this means is Cooley has some competition and both will be pushing each other to be the best they can. Plus I'm sure both will need breaks at some point in time so the other can relieve each other. |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
Too many people are ready to trade Cooley and go with Davis. I think we need both of them, whether we have one on the bench and the other in the games or both of them in the games.

Alright fine, I'm not saying he's definitely going to be mediocre but you have to admit the circumstances are pretty similar to 2006 when Betts replaced Portis. Superstar goes down with an injury, gets replaced by second round pick that up to that point is a bust, and shines during a lost cause season. Maybe it'll work out, we have a smart Offensive Coordinator but my moneys on Davis being mediocre.
Stir the pot Dirtbag. :thumb:
Thanks 53, I'm doing my best. |

I just said that it's not fair to say that he'll fall into mediocrity without any basis to the statement. |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
Forget Davis and Cooley -- we have ANOTHER tight end on our roster..
-- Selvish Capers could have been a tight end. As a kid in Louisiana, the rookie right tackle modeled himself after Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez. He was a three-year starter on his basketball team, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound leaper with self-described "great" hands and a nose for the end zone. But after he arrived at West Virginia, he started adding weight. He also realized the Mountaineers' offense wasn't dialing up a lot of plays for the tight ends. Coaches suggested he change positions, and he agreed, at first reluctantly. He said he has a 32-inch vertical and can still put down windmill dunks. And he said he'll change his body type once football ends. "I never really tried to gain weight, it just happened," said Capers, whom the team lists at 6-4 and 308 pounds. "I don't know where it goes, to be honest. A lot of people say I've got all the weight in my legs. I don't even really know." When he was at West Virginia, Capers told reporters that "I still watch the tight ends and think to myself, 'I can do that.' " So I asked whether he'd drop that message on Mike Shanahan's desk. "No, indeed not," he said. "I've got to tell them I'm gonna block first and get that down pat, and then maybe we can discuss it." It's making it or break it yr for our WR's I'm sure they will come thru with flying colours. |
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
Can't wait for the season to start to see how both TE's play. I'm glad we have both of them!
|
Re: McNabb excited about TE opportunities
I'm NOT happy to have both of them. I would have been much happier to have Cooley and some awesome Center or RG or LB or RB instead.
But now that we have them, I'm hoping that Shanahan finally actually uses two TE sets (and our O-line holds up without a blocking TE so that McNabb doesn't have to fight for his life). If that works, then yes, two top tier TE's is good. But at the end of the day I'm always going to say that I'm sad that we have two great TEs -- instead of a great TE and something else. |

Good things coming for Cooley and Davis.
Both Shanahan's make good use of double and triple TE sets. And its a misconception that Zorn didn't run double TE sets. But, Zorn often didn't pass to the TEs from those sets and in general Zorn's passing game as a whole was ineffective, based on the uptick in performance when Bingo Lewis took over. But here are some of the types of double TE passing sets and play's i'm look ing forward to: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-mqzBAAy_k]YouTube - Texans Use of Owen Daniels[/ame] NFL Videos: Owen Daniels Highlight, WK 06 vs. Bengals 2009 |
