Raiders Want Their Money Back from Russell

Raiders file grievance against Russell - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

This should be interesting.

I can't understand this quote though by one of Russell's agents

“The money in question was fully guaranteed. That is why JaMarcus was forced to hold out and miss all of training camp as a rookie,” Metz said. “The Raiders know that and this is our only comment.”

He was forced to hold out because the money was guaranteed?

I think he was saying he held out until the Raiders guaranteed the funds.

He wasn't forced to hold out shit. He held out cuz he knew he wanted max money cuz he sucked and he figured he'd rob ol' Al' before he returned to his true passion, eating as much as he wanted.

But no seriously I'm not sure if the Raiders will get their money back. I mean they definitely deserve it back but because of the nature of contracts its really hard to get it back without proving he really messed up. Like Russell would have to do something seriously wrong like on Vick's level to have to give up that money. Being a massive bust (in more ways than one) probably isn't one of those things.

They prolly could pay Jason's salary alone just on what that clown Russell received the last year.

This why when the new CBA comes out there will be a Rookie salary cap, & a minimum salary for players with 5yrs or more.

Love that walrus!

At least I think it's a walrus?

Russell doesn't really deserve all that money, but it's better that he gets it than that old bastard keeping it.

Actually, my sources say he was more interested in fishing than he was in football, even before he was drafted.

If your sources knew that then the Raiders definitely did yet they signed him anyway so they deserved what they got.
they deserve that money back (according to the way he played, not legally).
I think the Raider's fans should get the money back; not the team. I mean, think about it, those poor season ticket holders! Raider's fans are some of the most die hard fans out there! They're so die hard that they even took over an entire section in the stadium and renamed it "The Black Hole". Those guys trusted their team to make the right pick at quarterback. They got excited about getting a quarterback at number one overall. They all flock to the stadium to see how good he's going to be. But, they paid for a bunch of crap! They paid to watch someone that was worse then Ryan Leaf! Thats bad! And You know how many more beers they were forced to drink at games just so they could get through it? Probably 10 more....................at least! And at $9 a beer thats alot of money!

Heck, I don't know even know what the Raider's organization is really complaining about. I'm sure their revenue sales increased greatly during the games they had Russell starting! I bet it even doubled for the last three years. And you know what, they owe their loyal fan base an apology! Not only for drafting that bumb, but for paying him all that guaranteed money too! Because, when you pay that kind of money you have to keep starting him and starting him and starting him. Those poor guys..........how they ever got through it is beyond me.

And if they really do get paid more money for cutting Russell then they should, at the very least, give that money back to their die hard/ loyal fans. They owe them that.

JR is a mega bust no doubt, but I hope the Raiders don't get their money back. They were the ones that drafted the guy and agreed to his contract. Tough doo-doo.

Re: Raiders Want Their Money Back from Russell

Did anyone see espn's 30 for 30 film "Straight Outta LA" that was directed by Ice Cube? It was really good. An LA councilman said that Al Davis & the Raiders have always let you know that they put their team first, implying that Al Davis is getting what he deserves because he refuses to work w/people, namely the nfl & cities of Oakland & LA.

A sports writer said that Al Davis has played the victim so long that he's become the victim. Essentially saying, if you believe you are a victim you'll become one. After all his legal battles w/the nfl & the cities he's had his team in, he still doesn't have a long-term deal in place for a stadium.

This sounds like Al Davis is again trying to plead injustice, but there's just nothing there. How many teams would like to have $ back from top 10 picks that didn't amount to anything? I just want our draft picks back from when we selected Shuler & Westbrook!

I agree. While JR was a bust, it was a contract and they both agreed to it. Russell was willing to fulfill his end and be their QB (although not a good one). The Raiders need to honor their end of the deal.

I also think the problem with NFL contracts is they are never what they appear to be. If a player isn't performing, the team can cut him and not pay the future years. Then, if a player out performs his contract and holds out for more money, all you hear is how he signed the contract and should honor it.

Re: Raiders Want Their Money Back from Russell

That's nature of guaranteed money, it's GUARANTEED. JR was a bust no doubt but he received a deal consistent with what other firsts had received previously and the normal year to year contract increases. I don't know about a rookie cap coming from all this but at least make rookie contracts 3 years from now on. Then teams won't get hemmed up with huge salaries for guys that are not playing well enough to justify those salaries. At least then a team can pay on the scale that exists now but they don't have to make such a huge future investment in the player that has the potential to set them back for multiple seasons. This also presents an argument for teams to lobby for eliminating the dead cap space designation for players who change teams while under contract or leave football with accelerated bonus money still on the books. That money should be able to move to a franchise expense category that does not count against the cap.

Re: Raiders Want Their Money Back from Russell

Perfect scenario for Russell: Getting signed as a backup lineman project. He's mobile enough to be a pulling guard, plus he will not only be allowed to eat as much as he wants, it will be encouraged. 330 pounds...no big deal.

SmootSmack 05-28-2010 03:39 PM

Re: Raiders Want Their Money Back from Russell

Yeah it'd be perfect if all it took to play offensive line was to be big. He couldn't get motivated to play QB in front of a rabid NFL fan base for millions of dollars, something tells me being a backup interior lineman for close to vet min won't change that.

Hey, I think a lot of players, and coaches, should be paying money back to the owners if they didn't at least try their best on the field. Even Coach Gibbs should have given Danny some of his salary back because he left (both times) when he saw the talent level drying up. Vinny Cerrato should have given all his money back! Ditto for Zorn.

Maybe the first time he left because of imminent talent deficit but the second time I really think pulling that team through the Sean Taylor tragedy took a lot out of him on personal level. Sean was his first pick with the team for his second go round, Gibbs tried so hard to help Sean turn things around in his life, and see all that work end the way that it did I think coming back for another year would have been too much, I mean to see a career and a life end like that when so much progress had been made has to be disheartening and then to be the guy that a team looks to for guidance after the situation that took a toll....off topic I know but I don't fault Gibbs for leaving the second time and I think he earned his money.
