Redskins Insider - Brian Westbrook: "This season is gonna be different"
I'm really starting to hope we can sign this guy. If he's completely healthy as he says, he would bring a totally different dimension to the offense. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Westbrook would be a great addition to the backfield, no doubt.
But who gets the axe if Westbrook joins the Skins and makes the roster? LJ? CP? WP? |

Johnson has earned a lot of praise from the coaches for his work ethic. We haven't heard much on Parker, and the little that we have heard wasn't particularly good. Parker would appear to be the odd man out if Westbrook is brought in. |

Yeah I could see that. Should be a good camp battle. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
I wonder if this means Portis will play more then 3 downs in preseason this year
|
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Everything I've read says Portis is the "starter" but will primarily be used on 3rd downs. To me, thats a contradiction - If he primarily plays 3rd downs, he's not the starter. LJ makes the most sense to be the primary 1st and 2nd down back. Now, things would get really interesting if we brought westbrook here, since he's also mostly a 3rd down type of back. Either way, looking at our roster I really dont see a reason for willie parker to be here - with or without westbrook.
Personally, I don't like the idea of rotating backs much within series. Most backs, especially guys like Portis, get better over the course of a series. If you take them in and out of the game (unless theyre just exhausted), it messes up with their rythm. Ideally, I think we should have Portis take most of the snaps in the 1st half with Westbrook sprinkled in on 3rd downs. Then give most of the 2nd half snaps to Johnson, while mixing Portis and Westbrook in on some 3rd downs. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Brian has wore me down. What's with the whole "it has to make sense to me?" I look at it this way...either you want to be a Skin and play with you bro or you don't. His comment screams of they made an offer that makes sense to them, but I need more money for it to make sense to me. The only other thing it could be is he wants a guarenteed roster spot for fear he would get beat out by one of the others and cut.

That gives them the chance to get in that rythm, and then also limits their carries somewhat. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Ehhhhh, I think Westbrook would be another liability. We have plenty of Running backs that haven't played a full season in a while, for various reasons. Westbrook is ALWAYS hurt, no matter what guarantees him or his agent give.

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
good place as any:
Redskins Insider - Clinton Portis, in shape and motivated, will enter camp determined I think we will be fine with the running game. Smoot has me expecting Ryan Torrain to have 1900 yards, but these "old" guys have shown they know how to get it done, and I think the Shanahans will make it happen. I think Brian Westbrook blew his opportunity to sign on with a team, and now, will have to wait to see what opens up as preseason gets rolling. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
I really don't want to see this guy die on the field from a hit to the head. I mean honestly I hate saying that, but how much more can his head take?

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
The fact that MS has shown interest in him tells you he is seeing something he doesnt like. I think if we do get Westbrook, Parker is gone.

I wouldn't go that far. Westbrook is a known talent who has an injury risk. If we didn't already have Parker secured, we'd probably have gone after him. Many thought the guy would retire and didn't want to waste a key roster spot on someone like that...now that we know the guy is all in, we need to take another look...the only problem is we already have 3 experienced backs. The question is this....what is the gain over a guy like parker...it is not as huge as it would be for some other teams backup RBs. I personally would prefer Westbrook over Parker...but you never know. Westbrook could be gone after 3 game for his career and a cut parker may be in Philly or something having an insurgence....it is really kind of a risky move, but the upside is high with Westbrook IF he doesn't get injured. No one wants a player to get seriously injured while on their squad...if it doesn't happen on national tv...it may just happen in practice when he gets rocked by Orakpo....If we get him....we should be VERY careful of how much contact he has outside of game day |

excellent point man, I see him signing within the first week or two of training camp after a few teams see that they have a glaring need and are desperate. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
If Westbrook waits any longer, how useful is he going to be at the start of the season? Certainly it is going to take him awhile to get back to "football" speed. Still, I would not mind B.W. being a Redskin.

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
There will be injuries in our backfield, but the question for BW is, does he wait and miss the prep phase with the new team and offense, or does he sit it out, wait for Portis, LJ or WP to get hurt, and then get a bigger payday, or signed by another team for a higher salary? Also by doing that, it runs the risk of him not getting signed at all as well. Its very risky on his part, cause if he does get signed, it wont be for all that much, and the time missed could mean his production would suffer thru the next season, reaffirming everyones suspicions that his best days are long gone, and he is a HUGE injury Liability. Then there goes a possible multi year contract, and his NFL future is Caput.
Simply stated, if he is so healthy and rearing to go, he should definitely take the best offer he has been given, and prove that he has whatever he says he has on the field, and then POSSIBLY renegotiate in next years off season. Signing now gives him the best chance of increased production, and extending his NFL career........ |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
First, I'm not sure what to make of having two backs with 3 concussions and at least 15-16 missed games last year.
But if you're wondering whether Westbrook would be okay after missing training camps -- it'd probably be okay given McNabb knows him better than anyone. Last year he only started practicing August 16 (albeit with Philly playbook, etc). However it would be wise for the Shanahans to be flexible in the order of starters from 1st and 2nd half. CP has typically had a killer instinct l8 in games, but from everything we hear LJ is looking to have a monster resurgence to his career. The coaches should give both guys the opp to be the "closing" RB, see who runs stronger to the finish. If the performances are basically equal then maybe switch it up. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Come on Westbrook? A walking frigging injury for 2+ seasons now. Don't you think we have signed enough older RBs on the roster at the expense of giving a young stud a shot? Signing both LJ and WP show me that all this change stuff is mostly hype.

Westbrook to sign somewhere by Monday according to Mort. I predict Denver, they are having RB injuries...we don't need him. CP, LJ and Torain will work. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
I just can't see why he'd sign here. I know playing for Shanny is a major pull but he's be in competition with at least 3 other other guys they are already high on and have already been working with. I can't see BW looking at that and thinking it offers much of a unencumbered opportunity. Denver does seem like the obvious choice right now but there again not too far down the line Moreno is gonna be back and he most definitely is starting over BW once he is even remotely healthy. I don't get why he has waited so long.

Broncos just added Justin Fargas this week. Westbrook didn't want to deal with training camp basically, so he took his time. Maybe he took too much time If he wants playing time it'll probably the Rams, if he wants a chance to win he's got a better chance here. If he wants perhaps a little of both then he'll sign with the Saints |

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Thats one way to look at it a paycheck is a paycheck for some. If he does sign with the Rams thats all hes getting.
No happy ending here if this move occurs this team flat out sucks! Brian Westbrook expected to join Rams Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 14, 2010 3:37 PM ET Steven Jackson said this week the Rams didn't need a veteran running back, but it looks like they are going to get one anyway. ESPN.com's Mike Sando relayed the news cautiously on Twitter: "Just landed in STL and finished radio with John Clayton, who says the Rams will likely add Brian Westbrook on Monday. Good insurance." Perhaps Westbrook is waiting for tonight's games to happen just in case he gets another offer before making it official. While Westbrook has no chance to win a title in St. Louis, this looks like his best route towards playing time. Chris Ogbonnaya was the favorite to be the backup running back in St. Louis. Should Westbrook sign, the Rams could wind up keeping Jackson on the sidelines during many third downs. |

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
I was for maybe picking him up back in April/May and having another weapon on the field but honestly right now it's not fair to all the other RB's who have been here busting their butts. Plus it would take a while for him to learn the play calls and scheme. Which means maybe by the last preseason game he would be able to perform somewhat well.
So now I'm against it. Portis looked good. Williams and Torain were awsome. Did Johnson even play? I stopped watching or fell asleep somewhere in the 4th quarter when it was 35-17. I was sorta supprised to see 45-17. I know it's a sin what I did. so no to Westbrook. He missed the boat in my book. He had a chance to be apart of something special and he waited too long in my book. All he's good for now is having a team with an injured RB call him. |

There was an offer on the table for him that he refused in an effort to perhaps find something better. Speculation suggest he would already be signed here if the money was what he'd be willing to accept. It's not too late providing he dosen't find a better offer. |

We simply don't need Westbrook. He is a walking injury anymore. If we are probably going to cut Parker, why sign Westbrook? Torain and K Williams looked solid last night. We need to keep some youth on the squad to build on later on down the road, when CP and LJ start to decline.

i see Portis, Johnson, Torain, and K. Williams probably stashed somewhere to be activated at a later date. Parker will get cut. At this point, we don't need Westbrook. Offtopic, but i'm more concerned about M. Kelly & D. Thomas.
