Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Redskins' receivers to join Donovan McNabb for "hell week"
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 18, 2010 12:40 PM ET The Redskins will open training camp in Ashburn, Virginia, on July 29, but Donovan McNabb and some of his teammates are getting a head start. Rick Maese of the Washington Post reports that receivers Devin Thomas, Santana Moss and Malcolm Kelly are among the players who have accepted McNabb's invitation to spend this week in Arizona for an intense series of workouts in the desert heat. "I think it's important for the specialists on the offense to have that chemistry, to have that bond," McNabb said, "where they can trust me and I can trust them." McNabb calls the workouts -- which he also did with teammates in Philadelphia -- "hell week." "It's a different mindset," McNabb said. "I prepare guys the way I prepare." For some players, a week of relaxation might make more sense than a week of hell right before the start of camp, but Thomas is among those expressing excitement at the opportunity to get extra work in. "Can't nothing but good come out of the situation when you go out and work out with your quarterback before the season starts," Thomas said. "It's a great time to build that chemistry without the coaches being there. You just get a little of that extra bonding time to lead into training camp." |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
I love it. Like DT said, nothing but positive can come from this.

Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Really like what McNabb is bringing to the table with the team concept, something that is rather new in DC in the past 10 or so years.
I see these little things being very big moving forward as a TEAM. I hope it translates into the WIN column. Also applaud Kelly, Thomas, and Moss for putting in a little extra for the cause of team betterment I see this paying dividends for all parties. |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
I have always liked McNabb.. The guy want's that RING as bad as REDSKINS fans do! I know this sounds like a Homer but I can really see us competing for a Championship these next 3 years.. And as far as our WR's go, they all better be in AZ with Donovan because Terrell Owens and possibly VJ are still possibilities.

Well it looks like at least the slated top three will be in Arizona. Not sure about Jackson, but I think it's safe to remove TO from your list of WR possibilities list. |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Yea I guess T.O will have to wait even longer lol

Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
I love reading this. This isn't fluff, actual things getting done to improve our qb/wr situation for the year. I won't be the only one working in the AZ heat this week :).

i am so happy about this. this is just the type of leadership that campbell was never able to provide. HTTR!!!

If I recall, Jason worked out plenty in the offseason with the WRs. But he's not named Donovan McNabb and didn't have a fancy name like "Hell Week," so his workouts didn't get this kind of pub. |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Really like this, REALLY LIKE THIS. Definitely a different feeling for this upcoming season.

I still really feel for Jason - I can't wait to see how Jason does at Oakland; I really hope the best for him.. Back on the news; I'm really glad to hear this - just like someone just said, hopefully this will turn to winning games.. |

the point is that mcnabb is respected in the locker room and can get our tops wrs to arizona for extra work outs. i dont remember JC having the wr core to mississippi. mcnabb commands way more respect and control over the whole offensive scheme than JC, no doubt about it. this kind of news makes me wish it was august already. pass me some of that koolaid. |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Great news everyone needs to be there, I know this will get back to the FO & they will see who dosen't attend or take the invite & that person will be one of the 1st cuts. 11 days to Training Camp opens.

Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
^ I think it's mainly our excitment of this team.. We have a very good coaching staff and a damn good GM. Throw in a HOF type QB and any news is good for us. Campbell was always gonna be " just a guy " and we all knew that. McNabb actually gives us a shot at making a legit run

Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
This is great to hear... its really important for them to develop any type of familiarity with each other as they can before training camp... I cannot wait for camp to open up and see how this team starts to come together!

Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Now, would a rookie QB picked first by us in the first round make three years down the road for "rebuilding" come up with this?

That's exactly what I was thinking my writing/typing is not the best so I didn't say anything. LOL |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Great to hear that McNabb is asserting himself as the leader of this team. Combined with the fact that main players within the Redskins offense will not only be working together and building chemistry, but will be competing against the likes of Revis, this should have a, not definite, but significant impact on our performance come the regular season.
I just hope that Cooley, Portis, and Davis accept his invites too. |

i think it was a different kind of respect though. campbell was respected as a person and as being tough. he was well liked but he was not respected as the leader of the offense. i don't mean to knock on campbell, i like the guy but he was way too unemotional. he needed to show more fire and leadership, imo. |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Nice to see that Devin and Malcolm are enthusiastic about working out with Donovan. Those guys do have the potential to be great ballers for us if they work hard and really strive to improve their game. To me if they don't deliver for us, it is going to set back the rebuilding effort back a few seasons.
|
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
The big reason this is such good news is that it gives these guys a head start on learning the new offense together. We're going into a season of major major change, which usually means huge adjustments with spotty results. But this gives them a head start.
Just please nobody get hurt! |

Hint:the strategy to getting Ovechkin vs. the strategy of milking Tatum Bell for all of trade value worth. |

Skins fans should be...bustin' at the seams hearing stuff like this......

Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
I know I am loving news like this. Having a guy like Donovan leading this group is so awesome for me. I have always admired DM as a player and I enjoy having a guy with his work ethic leading this squad. Like others have said JC was a good guy and all, but he could not get this group to perform. I know it is only July but having guys like Tana, DT, and Malcom travelling out there a week before 2 a days is just awesome. It is a show of dedication to this up coming season and it may be another step in getting this team back to relavance in the NFC.
HAIL TO THE REDSKINS! Because : damn it they deserve it just for all the work they have put in this offseason. I know we will see it on the field come september. |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Great to see Moss as a 31 year old veteran go out there. Hope he does *something* this year. I've had such hopes for him, only to see him have just 2-3 good games per year. So goes the careers of short fast WR's as their speed goes away..
Does anyone know why the heck they pick Arizona? Why make it a "hell week" when they could rent a stadium in San Diego and practice in sunny 70 degree temperatures.. It's not like it's going to be 112 degrees when they play football September to January... Only thing I can think of is to prepare them for training camp in DC, but... why? ps. GREAT to hear Revis out there with them. A great corner to practice against! (and we don't play him this year -- unless...) |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
I'm glad they're working together but I'm pissed our QB/WR never did things like this in the past...why the heck aren't Davis/Cooley participating?
No wonder McNabb was able to win with mediocre receivers...they were on the same page. |

Colt Brennan will be there too

Gotta love this little jump on training camp these guys will be getting. Thumbs up to McNabb.

I love McNabb...........so strange....spent so many years loathing him..........

Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
I remember last year, I was all excited that our OLine went to Arizona(i think) and worked out together. It was exciting for line chemistry, and I know it bolstered my belief in the line (prior to game one of course).
Here's hoping this move works out far better! |
Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
I think this is year has a diferent feel than last. Last I was going on blind faith in the team. This year it feels a little more solid.

Definitely. We're in much better hands now with Allen, Shanahan, McNabb as opposed to Vinny, Zorn, Campbell. |

Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
As long as the injury bug doesn't come calling I think we are in a much better position this year.

Re: Redskin Wideouts to join McNabb in Arizona for "hell week"
Kudos for guys taking some responsibility and acting like real pros that care about the game of football, as well as their team. Nice to hear about these types of things instead of players ducking their responsibilities, and shirking mini camps. Good job you all. I actually hope MK and DT do a good job this season now, and prove that they are not busts. It seems like with some direction provided by a vocal team LEADER, their work ethic is right where it needs to be.
