MAD about Mad Men

Here we go, look out for spoilers!!!

Re: MAD about Mad Men

To answer JoeRedskin, I agree Henry did seem like he stepped in a pile of dog poop and his mom not liking Betty either has to add to his doubt.

Re: MAD about Mad Men

Already mentioned this to SS, but the AMC site has Betty listed as "Betty Francis". Guess they got married in the time represented by the break? Kind of hard to get her and Don back together.

Betty has just gotten bitchier and bitchier. Other than to look at, does anyone really like her character??

SmootSmack 07-26-2010 10:11 AM

Re: MAD about Mad Men

I love Betty's character mainly because she's pretty cold-hearted (then again she did get cheated on repeatedly). But I'm glad they decided she wouldn't just be another pretty face, happy homemaker.

I've had a feeling that something with the kids was going to ultimately bring Don and Betty together, maybe at the end of the season. And something I heard the other day tends to confirm my suspicions

mredskins 07-26-2010 10:31 AM

Re: MAD about Mad Men

SS to your point about the kids, it is interesting that on IDMb they are not listed out to 2010.

Don done went nut-so...I like. That weasel living in Don's house is disgraceful.

JoeRedskin 07-26-2010 11:13 AM

Re: MAD about Mad Men

Well, in terms of a character's "weaselness", we are talking degrees here. Don's pretty much head weasel when it comes to cheating on spouses with ole' Roger a close second. Henry, to me anyway, seems like a relatively good guy.

Interesting to see where it goes - I really think he is going to find out that being the "other guy" is a lot more interesting than being married.

Is Francis broke? Why is he telling her to find a house specially after he told her he would take care of her? He's in it for something...it's the quite ones you got to worry about.

I don't think there was an implication that she was buying the new house. I think he was telling her "Look - cut ties with this guy. Why are you still here? Get out of this house so we can start our life together."

You could be right but so far the guy (other than sleeping with another man's wife - but in this show that's almost a given - he has been pretty much up front. Once Betty made the decision, Henry's been right up front with what he wants and why. He apparently married her practically the moment the divorce was final and he's not hiding from Don. Again, I think he is the odd man out, though how they make it happen, I don't know.

I'm pretty sure they got married...I would imagine that if he married her he would make the call of moving out right away. Don's daughter will be Henry and Betty's undoing. I'm rooting against this Henry guy on the basis that he's not man enough.

He probably hasn't even got to the one where Betty poses for Playboy.

Kind of funny you made this comment because after Sundays (8/15) show they maybe heading that way.

Is it just me or is the season a yawn fest.

Ok, maybe not just you but I've really liked it. I think seeing Don kind of lose the old school charm as most of the people around him evolve is really interesting.

Not enough Betty Draper and Roger Sterling, looking forward to their return next week.

This season has moved a bit methodically, but that's kind of always been how Mad Men operates. Don's descent is pretty remarkable to see, but I'm not sure I want to see him fade into a drunken loser.

Did anyone else get a good laugh out of Lane Pryce shouting jibberish Japanese during the Godzilla movie? (I'm assuming it was jibberish, because I don't remember learning that his character speaks the language, although I still find it funny either way).

Season moving very slow and kinda uninspiring so far. That fuzzy brows chick is a lesbian?

It was hilarious - my wife pegged her the minute Peggy got off the elevator - "Betcha she's a lesbian and is going to make a pass at Peggy".

I agree with your assessment. Kinda wondering where they are going with this storyline.

Aside from that scene, this episode had some really funny moments. Between Don's new secretary and Peggy riding in circles around an empty studio this one had me cracking up.

I agree a lot of plot lines going on, it felt like the old Mad Men I am exicited about the series again!

Not to get too off track on this, but does anyone else think the "Next Week on Mad Men" are totally useless. They literally give you no idea what's going to happen in the next show. I believe the format is:

Dramatic Line, Dramatic Line, Dramatic Line, Shocked Face, Dramatic Line, "To see more about next week's episode go to AMCtv.com"

I've noticed that too. It always seems like it's going to be some huge deal and nothing ever comes of it.

Hmmm...maybe the same people who produce Entertainment Tonight, also do the previews for Mad Men.

Ever watch ET? They preview everything and make it sound like a big deal and then by the time it comes up in the show it is like a ten second clip. ANNOYING!

I really liked this last episode, but it sure seems like they're focusing a whole lot on Peggy this year (Don is expected). I miss the ensemble aspect of the show

I do plan to start using "You should be thanking me, and Jesus, every day for giving you a chance!" in staff meetings

Or you could start using Don's secretary's metaphor about watching a fight, I mean if you want to get fired.

I've always viewed Mad Men as a show that kinda revolves around the whole Don/Peggy angle (when not dealing with generational themes). Both characters are very similar, in terms of distancing themselves from their pasts and recreating new images.

That episode (two weeks ago) was on par with Breaking Bad's "Fly" ep, with just two characters. Don and Peggy have a very dynamic relationship- Don sees himself in her and she looks to him as where she wants to be.

Anyone notice a stylistic change in Mad Men this week? Incredible scene when he's sipping the scotch and the camera/audio does some nifty things to show his change in perspective, when it comes to drinking.

I also like the subtlety in his ressurection... he's not quitting cold turkey- but he's now only drinking after someone puts it in his hand (or a glass of wine with his date).
