Dreams

Dreams can be so funny sometimes. Last night I had a very vivid dream that I won the lottery. I was checking my ticket and I was like holy shit I think I just won. Then I was on the phone with my Mom asking her to read off the numbers to confirm my ticket. And then here's the dumbest part, I was on Facebook updating my status saying I just won the lottery! LOL, I remember saying over and over I'm gonna retire, I'm gonna retire. Then I woke up and quickly realized it was just a dream, I was so bummed

Facebook? That IS dumb. :D

Good thing you woke up before they took the taxes out...and it became a nightmare.

People keep trying to steal my secrets while I dream, so I have to keep them in a vault hidden in a fortress in the mountains, surrounded by soldiers made up from my subconscious.

Then you can have the opposite, when I was younger I had a super vivid dream someone destroyed the interior in my car. I can remember even worrying in my dream how to get it fixed. Then I woke up and I was so relived it was a dream.

Re: Dreams

I saw Inception last night...so you can imagine how weird my dreams were last night. Every time I seemed to shift from one dream to the next, there was Ellen Page standing in a big doorway (note to self: find a better use for Ellen Page in my next dream than standing in a doorway)

The night before I dreamed I was at my 20th high school reunion (which is still several years away) yet it was held at my elementary school cafeteria.

Yrs. back I would have the same dream over and over again. I was running down our pier and slip on a banana peel and my feet would go flying out from under me and I would suddenly wake up as I was hitting the deck.

Re: Dreams

Speaking of recurring dreams I often have dreams of when I used to work at a bank. It's always the same, I'm working the drive up window and there's a line of cars wrapped around the building and we're just about to close, and I can't remember how to do the job. Totally silly since I could walk into that job today and be back up to speed in minutes.

And of course who hasn't had the dream of being in class and you realize it's the final and you didn't study. Or you haven't been to class all semester, that sort of thing.

I died in my dream the night I saw that movie... it was so freaky

Re: Dreams

I'm sure I've brought it up here before but perhaps my weirdest dream ever wasn't so much the dream itself but the circumstances following the dream

This was back in college. So I have this dream that I'm standing on one side of the road and my friend is on the other side. I see her and wave to her. She waves back, and starts crossing the street. Suddenly she's hit by a bus! She flies in the air and lands hard on the asphalt. But then she gets up and appears unscathed.

So anyway, I wake up, and think to myself wow what a crazy dream I'll have to tell this girl all about it when I see her. We'll probably have a good laugh over it. So the whole day passes and I still haven't seen her, and no one else knew about the dream.

It's early in the evening now and I'm walking back to my dorm. I then see her running toward me in a frenzy. "Oh my God! I'm so glad you're ok. I had the craziest dream last night. I had this dream where you were on the other side of the street and you waved to me. I waved back. Then you started crossing the street and were hit by a bus!"

Woah!

I graduated from college in '04 but I still have the dream that I haven't been to class all semester and the school takes my diploma away. It always sucks.

When I was younger I used to have a reoccurring dream that I was stick in the backseat or passenger seat of a run away car and I had to try to reach the steering wheel and break pedal. Those freaked me out, and I'm sure there's some kind of deeper meaning that I don't want to think about.

Re: Dreams

When I was 9 I dreamed that I was sitting down to lunch, and I had peanut butter & jelly cut in two halves, in triangles.

One half sprouted eyes, opened up, ate the other half, and then looked up at me and burped.

I laughed so hard that I woke myself up. I'll never forget that one.

I've had a recurring dream that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get a high school diploma. It's one of those you're trying to move as fast as you can and can't get anywhere type of dreams. Then the whole world passes me bye and I'm stuck with zero education. Strange. Every time I wake up from that dream I feel the urge to go make sure my high school/college diplomas are still in the closet. LOL.

My dreams are pretty weak by comparrison.

I keep having dreams that I either reenlist or that I am still in the Army. Every night I'm in a new f'd up situation. When I wake up I breathe a sigh of relief that it was just a dream.

I have this dream often. It's always some circumstance brings me back to college as though I haven't finished and it's like I have to work extra hard and things are all different when I go back.

I also (seriously!) have a dream that many times I'm going Resident Evil style and am either protecting people from zombies or terrorists. I always have some sort of automatic weapon and try to protect my family.

I have that one. I am in the dream, and my discharge was denied. I was involuntarily extended, and I have absolutely no clue where to report. I HATE that dream.

I also have sleep walked. One time, while doing a paper route, I got out of bed, got ready, walked outside, the papers weren't there and I was mad, so I called the guy who ran the route, and said where are my papers! He cussed me out and said it's only 1:45 am, i argued, and then at some point woke up in a complete fog of where I was, I had to stumble out an apology and go back upstairs to bed. It's happened a couple other times, but that was the deepest and weirdest.

Anyone ever have lucid dreams, you know where you become aware of the fact that you are dreaming? It's pretty wild, there are actually some techniques you can train your brain with to make it happen more often.

Yeah, I have had that happen many times. However it seems that once I realize I'm dreaming, it's only a matter of minutes before I wake up. Never seems to last very long.

One thing I've noticed- for me, when I don't realize it's a dream, I have no control over what's happening. It's like I'm watching myself in a movie. Once I realize I'm dreaming, I can actually control what I'm doing and saying. But like I said, that only feels like it last for a minute or two, then I actually wake up. The human brain is something else.

Definitely. For me, I can only do that for about 3-5 minutes before I realize and wake up. :(

I have this happen pretty regularly...well, not like every night but you know what I mean. I've gotten to the point where I can sort of control my actions, if that makes sense. Like my cognitive abilities kick in somewhat.

Really weird.

Re: Dreams

If you do some little "reality checks" throughout the day when you're awake, you can train yourself to do it when you're sleeping. Once you realize you're dreaming, it's pretty crazy.

What works for me is checking the time on a clock or watch. During the day whenever you look at a clock, just ask yourself if you're dreaming. In a dream when you look at the time, look away, and then look back, chances are the time will be different or the numbers will be all out of order.

I never have dreams I can recall later... My wife is one of those people that remembers every detail of her crazy dreams, I'm always jealous because it sounds like fun. I've had the dreams where I'm fighting but I can only punch in slow motion or my fist never connects right... I also have this thing where dreaming that I'm going to die is super relaxing and comforting, i have no idea why. I'm not suicidal or depressed that I know of, but if I can't fall asleep, I think of dying, usually peacefully laying down in the woods, and it relaxes me so that I can get some rest. I'd love to hear someone explain that one...

Re: Dreams

Many times when I'm dreaming and I don't like what's happening I "shake the screen" like my dream exists on an Etch-a-Sketch and start over.

I remember as a kid often times feeling like I had "left my body" and I had to find myself back to me before I woke up. Weird stuff

Interesting. So is this how you train your cognitive skills to respond during a dream?

Okay, here's some far out stuff since we're talking about it. Do you guys fly in your dreams a lot or at all? And like land in weird places, times in history or the future?

Yeah there are some other techniques too like keeping a dream journal. It's just all about being more aware and knowing what to look for in order to realize a dream vs. reality.

I used to fly all the time, haven't done that in a long time though. Hmm, I wonder why.

It seems like as soon as I realize I'm dreaming the dream itself completely shifts, like I just changed the channel or something and everything starts to go fuzzy. I guess it could be that my conscious mind starts into interfere with my subconscious and I sort of lose my train of thought.

I had a dream once the mods here had to ban Matty. It was actually pretty ugly. Don't know what he did but I guess it was pretty bad
