ASHBURN, Va. -- It could be a smoke screen or just a cautious assessment of his quarterback's health, but Mike Shanahan says he's not certain that Donovan McNabb will be available for the Washington Redskins' season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

"I really don't know for sure," Shanahan said Sunday. "That's why it's day by day. We'll see how it goes."

McNabb hasn't practiced since spraining his left ankle in the second preseason game against Baltimore. He sat out Friday's game against the New York Jets and watched Sunday's practice with a black sleeve on his left leg.

Shanahan said the leg is too sore for McNabb to play this week against the Arizona Cardinals, but McNabb likely wouldn't have played in that game anyway because the coach prefers to rest his starter in the final exhibition to avoid injury.

However, backup quarterback Rex Grossman said he won't play this week either, perhaps as an insurance policy to make sure at least one of the top two quarterbacks on the roster is ready to go against the Cowboys on Sept. 12.

That leaves bubble quarterbacks John Beck and Richard Bartel taking the snaps Thursday at Arizona.

The news from Shanahan was more positive concerning running back Clinton Portis, who sprained his right ankle against the Jets.

"I don't think it's too serious. It's not a big setback," Shanahan said. "I would anticipate him being able to practice in a couple of days."

Fullback Mike Sellers, who missed the Jets game, remains day to day with a sprained left knee. Backup linebacker Perry Riley sprained his right ankle against New York and was wearing a walking boot Sunday.

I would be very surprised if he is not the quarterback in two weeks...

The fact that they're not going to play Grossman on Thursday, does tell me there is some concern, however.

Well even if he's starting they can't lie on the injury report. Well, I guess they could but the fact remains that McNabb isn't 100% and if the Dallas game was tomorrow, chances are Rex Grossman would be the starting QB.

And while this isn't anything to panick about, the underlying and underreported story, in my opinion, is every little nick and bruise McNabb gets between now and whenever he signs an extension will impact for how long and for how much.

Don't expect an extension to even be offered til after the season at the earliest, and the current situation is exactly why they haven't offered one. To offer an extension to a guy who hasn't taken one official game snap for the franchise and has already been hurt would be moronic. No it would be very, very Cerrato like.

That also goes for if he is inconsistent with his play during the season. I am figuring we are going to draft a QB in the next two drafts to be Donovan's understudy, then he will be eased into the job. Don't count on Donovan being her for more than his current contract.

Just Mike making a comment as to the current health of DMac. Like everyone else has stated we have two more weeks to go and he is still sore from the Ravens game 8 days ago. He has time to recoup and possibly get it together by Sept 12th. We all will take a wait and see approach, if he is practicing a week from now he is playing.

Let's not freak out just yet.

Shanny was rather vague. Of course Donovan is going to play. Two more weeks of rest will get the job done. He better not be gimpy for MR. Ware though.

I guess you are right Saden, I shouldn't worry so much. I still stand by my statement about not extending Donovan'a contract before the season is over though.

McNabb will play on the 12th. But a sprained ankle is unlikely to improve over the course of the season. You can still play effectively on it, as long as there is no swelling.

4-6 weeks is the typical healing time for an ankle sprain, give or take depending on the severity of course, but his doesn't sound too bad. He should be able to play without much of a problem and be close to 90% by 9/12.

MS was talking about several players but I remember him saying something like this "I thought Kelly would be a day or two and look how that turned out" I think he's going with the glass half empty. Mental game to Dallas IMO.

I don't think he is, but who knows? He might be thinking Rex would be good enough to pull it off. Thing is I am wondering if the crappy play by Dallas isn't one big mind screw in itself. I just can't fathom them looking so piss poor.

Excellent point regarding the contract ramifications. If he can't make it out of preseason healthy, McNabb certainly has less leverage to demand top QB dollars.

Normally,I wouldn't be that concerned about Mcnabb being able to play...

IF,I was just going by reports that it's a sprained ankle...But I'll say again...I'm concerned that they're making it sound better..than it really is.

I swear his leg snapped in 1/2 when that ravens guy bent his leg back like a pretzel on that intentional grounding play.

As I said before..it looked A LOT like the Theismann leg break.

So part of me wants to believe it's all coach speak and Shanny is just playing mind games with the Cowboys...

Anotehr part of me thinks that maybe McNabb is hurt worse than being reported.
Who knows?

I do know this....Love the Rex and think he is playing very well with the exception of a few bad plays like the safety and pick. But overall,he's done pretty darn good for a backup.

But my prediction of us dropping 40 points on dallas opening Sunday night changes from not only the points we score..but IF WE WIN...?

I truly do not like that feeling.

He seems to be walking around just fine. If the injury was severe he would be on crutches.

It takes a few days for a minor sprain to heal, and it usually takes 3-4 weeks to return to playing sports, so we should be OK.

I think we are going to kick butt anyway. We will just kick it better, and be able to get our foot further up their butts with McNabb under center.

Shanahan didn't sound very optomistic in his assessment of the McNabb situation. There appeared to be a hint of dissapointment in his expression.

McNabb has not been able to practice, has been experincing some difficulty with the nuances of a new offensive system and by his own admission, needs more time to make the necessary adjustments from what he's been accoustomed too after working eleven years in the same system.

Anything less than 100% would not be good for starting McNabb in the season opener. Futher aggeravation to his existing injury would only serve to set him back even more.

I think we all need to get use to Mike Shannahan playing mind games with the media on injuries, much like New England does. I think McNabb will be find in two weeks. The way the Cowboys have looked and the way the Skins 2nd team moved the ball on the Jets' 1s, I don't think I'm really worried. The turnover ratio has been great in the preseason, keep it up guys. I can see DeAngelo Hall getting 8-10 INTs this year.
