F...Toyota
I have defend Toyota on here before but now no more!
My 07 4Runner with 62k on it transmission blew up today. Car has been babied, also just paid it off a few months ago. Good thing I bought a Toyota! F...me. |

It should have a 5yr/60k mile powertrain warranty. Being out of warranty by only 2k miles, Toyota should not give you too much grief over having them pay for the repair. Unless they find evidence of abuse. The dealership should be happy to call the regional Toyota folks to request authorization to replace it no charge. If they don't, call them yourself (calmly) and explain the issue, and I bet they'll pay for it. Which engine do you have, the v8 or v6? |

I agree...way too many Toyotas with major issues. Many of my coworkers have Toyotas, with major issues and/or recalls. They're gone off a cliff quality-wise in the past few years. |

Sadly I will have to agree with you. |
Re: F...Toyota
Yeah, it's unfortunate for the people buying them with the "stereotype" or expectation that they'd maintain their past level of quality. Also didn't help that Consumer Reports had been recycling old quality tests and ratings instead of re-testing newer models. Things were going downhill and only the people who bought them found out...prospective shoppers had no clue.
Anyways, are transmissions a common issue with that model? Maybe check a forum for that specific model. If I were you, don't give up until they cover the entire thing. It's barely out of warranty and far before a reasonable failure mileage. Demand a loner car too...that job could take them awhile, especially with them being busy on the newest recall...2005-08 Corolla and Matrix with soldering issues, causing the engine to just stop, even at highway speed. Someone I work with has that car. Scary. There have been some accidents due to it. Good luck. |

Re: F...Toyota
Wow...that's bad. Every car forum I've been on discusses problems...and how to fix them...and what models/transmissions to avoid buying.
Sometimes, Toyota fans remind me of Apple fans...or Starbucks patrons. Many times, the same person is all three. :D |
Re: F...Toyota
Man they do everything they can to avoid giving you service with your warranty. My aux. jack broke back in my '09 Corolla about March this year while it was still under warranty (3 yr, 36k miles) and they tried to do everything they could to avoid repairing it until I finally got fed up and told them to fix it. Also the tire pressure indicator light is on and I think there's a malfunction in the system because it blinks for a minute when I turn the car on and stays solid, and according to the manual that means there's a problem with the system and not a tire. Because the psi in all 4 tires is normal, so it shouldn't be on. But they told me it wasn't them and maybe a stem broke and that's what's causing it. So I've had to deal with that for a while now.
Plus as recently as a month ago my aux. jack broke again, like all the times pulling the cord in/out has caused the jack itself to loosen from the dash thus creating an unstable connection. So I took the car to the dealership again, and they told me since the car's warranty expired at 36k miles (I was at 36,700) I would have to pay 100 bucks for the part and some obscene amount for the labor. In short, I hate them. Everybody that works at the dealership near my house is an asshole and their bottom line is doing whatever they can to avoid servicing cars under warranty. |
Re: F...Toyota
I haven't heard of a single transmission failure in the 4th gen 4Runners.
Obviously, that's not to say that there haven't been any, but I definitely would have heard about it if it was widespread. |
Re: F...Toyota
Shoulda bought Americun.

Can you describe how the vehicle is acting, exactly? Did the dealer say that the transmission is "blown"? |

The thing is Toyota and Toyota owners brag and brag how the cars are built so well...etc etc and in all reality the newer ones are not as reliable as the old ones. I am just fustrated today beacasue A) my car broke way before it should have and b) i am eating a ton of crow at home becasue no one in my family really likes the car but I convinced them to get on the reliability factor, which is now just a huge egg on my face. |

Re: F...Toyota
Does your 4R have 57k miles or 62k miles? Was it not the diff like you said in your T4R.org posts???
BTW, there are better forums for 4Rs out there. They're nothing but a bunch of grocery getters on that site. Check out Yota-Tech or Toyota120 if you want to talk to people who know what they're talking about. |

They are saying the transmission is wearing out the rear diff. The problem is the tranny the rear diff is the symptom. I am a grocery getter!!!!! I fit in perfect. |

Re: F...Toyota
Also, the only way they won't cover it if they find signs of abuse. If you've taken care of your vehicle, there's nothing to worry about.

lol @ the second part
Who knows it baffled me a bit and I said it to my mechanic guy (been going to him for like 10 years) he said maybe they are trying to grab more warranty dollars, who the f knows I like to avoid the dealer at all cost. I just got off with the phone again with them and they have to keep it longer to figure it out, know they are thinking wheel bearings. Who the F knows??? I will have a clear answer by noon tomorrow according to my service adviser. Which tells me he is putting another Tech on it that understands it better. In the end I am in a bad place. |

Well, I imagine mredskins was quoting the service advisor, who generally aren't the most technically literate folks in the world. That's why they're service advisors. |
Re: F...Toyota
Wheel bearings actually makes sense, given what you said over at T4R.org
It's less of a problem, but a problem that may not be covered under warranty, unfortunately. It may end up costing you more than if you actually had a bad tranny. |

Exactly right he is "guessing " what the issue maybe and just going off sound; wheel bearing could be it. My mechanic says he sure it is either the axle bearings (different from the wheel bearings) or the differential either way you have to tear down the hub to get to either. Well anyways I won't know until tomorrow because Toyota needs another mechanics opinion to determine the problem. I had to stop posting on Toyota forum about my issue they were all getting mad at me because I was saying a Toyota failed. I felt like a chore boy who said the priest molested him and now the congregation is mad at him. |
Re: F...Toyota
SO wait, is your vehicle drivable?
If the tranny nuked itself, you'd know for sure. |
Re: F...Toyota
it is drivable but very loud Toyota has it over night. When my Grand Cherokee's tranny went it was instant it started slipping and making noise. to be honest it is looking more and more not like the tranny.
I am hoping differential at this point because that is under warranty. What really sucks is i have the cash to fix but we have really been pinch pennies in my household the past 2 years so we can move so dropping a couple grand on a car that was suppose to last 200k miles is very disheartening. |

That's not too bad. If they're nice they'll try to get Toyota to pay for it. They're more likely to pay for axle bearings than wheel bearings. I'd be surprised if it your diff. It sounds like a bearing to me. Unless your diff is dry, I doubt that it would go bad so soon, under your driving habits. |

Thanks for your help cpayne i will keep you posted. Labor is always more then the part so you are probably looking at $500 to do the axle bearings. Do you have a 4runner? |

I'd love to have another one, actually. My wife drives it day-to-day, mostly, though she's got an S2000 and Jeep Rubicon, too, so she rotates. HA Here it is being wheeled with 30 day tags on it (I had just bought it the day before)... :silly: |

nice truck
honestly i hate to say this but in my heart of hearts i don't like my 4runner it is not for me; many folks love them and imo it is boring do nothing truck that has a horrible ride now that it is going to cost me for this repair i really wish i had got a another grand Cherokee, the build quality imo is the same and gc kicks ass |

We will see what they say tomorrow anything short of we will replace it under warranty will proceed with me driving to the Toyota dealership then driving the 4runner to carmax to turn it in.

The 4Runner is one of the best, off the showroom floor offroaders you can buy. In the world of car-based SUVs, it's real 4x4. I'm glad that Toyota realizes that there are people out there like me who still want a body on frame SUV that doesn't compromise too much wheelability for comfort. It's a perfect fit for me. I'll buy yours for $5k right now. ;) |

I am willing to bet it is not the wheel bearings that is way to easy diagnose they would have easily said it was that right off the top. Unless the vehicle has not been taken care of, those types of things should never go down (at that mileage). 60k is nothing on a decent car built today, especially Toyota. They are known for exceptional reliability. |
