The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Just getting a head start on it. No Haslett wasn't responsible for that McNabb pick, but we already knew the game was over. I know the offense has problems, but I've seen enough of the offense to know it's not anything that can't be corrected. The rushing game started to come around today before we abandoned it, and the passing game is good enough and will only get better if McNabb keeps gelling with his receivers.
The real issue at hand in this thread is our defense. I was willing to give a pass for getting gashed by the Texans offense, but letting a rookie quarterback missing a Pro Bowl running back in the backfield look like he did today is unacceptable. I don't believe the players are at fault as much as the scheme is, and the scheme sucks. The players aren't made for it. The majority of the players on our defense were damn good at being in a 4-3, and while some players have emerged in this scheme, namely Orakpo and Landry, I just don't believe that Haslett's defense will be successful in this league. We're not even 4 games into the season and the secret is out, and everybody knows it. Our offense isn't to the point yet where we can get into shootouts and win, and the more I see of this defense the more I think our offense is going to have to keep putting up more and more points on the board if it expects to win games. All we heard all offseason was about how the majority of our defensive players would have an easy transition to the 3-4. Well our defense has looked historically bad so far, and honestly I do believe next season we would be better off going back to a 4-3. I understand making the transition to a 3-4 from a 4-3 isn't easy, but we shouldn't be this bad this early in the season. Jim Haslett's defense is trash, and I just don't believe that if he can't make adjustments this early in the season then he won't ever be successful here in Washington. Instead of throwing away the majority of the players this offseason we should just go back to the defense they are comfortable with. Btw congratulations St. Louis. We just gave you your first September win in 4 seasons, and your second overall win in your last 29 games. |

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
The defense did lose this game. If Haslett couldn't run the 4-3 defense, he shouldn't have been hired. If Shanahan is stuck on coaching players of yester-years and not your Clinton Portis or Haynesworth, why was he hired?

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
We need a real nose tackle. Are there any decent prospects next year?
Kemo sucks and Albert is on and off. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Don't start. We just finished praising the hell out of this group a little while ago. Reserve the right to retract your statements.
|
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
IMO I think the offense has to get the defense out the field too. I do agree the defense sucks bad right now. But to there defense the D was gassed we converted 2 3rd downs all game & 1 rushing yard in the 2nd half.

Defense hasn't been playing well. We won a fluke in week one and the defense's issues caught up to us on week two. We just lost to a subpar team (apparently they are not) with a rookie QB that didn't play his senior year, basically no receivers, and their start RB (their main offensive weapon) out for half of the game. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
The defense wasn't broke, it didn't need to be fixed. We should've just hired a 4-3 defensive coordinator instead of overhauling a top 5 defense and making it the worst in the league. I mean honestly unless Jim Haslett suddenly realizes his defense isn't working we're gonna look like this for the rest of the season.
Just to clarify I don't want Haslett to be fired, because that solves nothing. There's nobody on the sideline that will make our defense better once they get the chance to shine. We're stuck with this for the rest of the season and unless Haslett figures something out we're probably gonna look like this for the rest of the season too. Hopefully his ego isn't so big that he can't figure out a solution. If he lets offenses like the Rams (without their Pro Bowl running back) look like that, then we're in trouble for the rest of the season. We've already seen what a great offense can do to his defense. Long story short, he needs to figure this shit out because our defense is playing horrible, and he hasn't shown the ability to adjust once offenses figure it out. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Carter struggles in coverage, we don't have a solid NT, secondary played a little better with Moore at safety, but our run D is horrendous.
|
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
We've been run on in all three games. Dallas just didn't stick w/ it. I agree it's going to take some time to convert to a 3 4 system and we may not have the personell for it. it's just obvious that we're not that good defensively. The line is avg at best and our corners are avg at best. Yes, D Hall is still avg. Has been avg and still is avg. No shocker there.
Don't fool yourselves guys, our team needs several good drafts to get some more talent. We'll be average til then. |

Carter in coverage is the least of our liabilities. Did you watch the game? |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
the reason the defense is on the field so long is that they play bad defense
|
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Count me in for firing Jim Haslett. I want to cut him!

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Too early to start demanding heads roll. Come on, let's be honest with ourselves we all knew going into this year we would maybe be an average team.

I wouldn't call for his head if I thought we can get better. I don't think we can in light of Haslett's questionable defensive play selection. I really believe Haslett is maxed out in terms of what he can offer our defense. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
I bet the Florida Tuskers had a better run and pass the defense.

Yeah I did and listed other issues as well in my post. Your right maybe not a big issue but an issue nonetheless. |

That summation is not a very good one. I sense from the game day thread a feeling of ship jumping. Is everyone off the wagon already? We've only played 3 games. |

Your summary makes me sick. I need anti-depressants. |

Has Haslett ever coached a top defense? I don't ever remember feeling dread going into a game against a Haslett D.

Best finish was a #6 ranked D. Only two top 10 finishes with the other being #10 i believe. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
D. Jax and J. Maclin are going to kill it next week. And when we do cover, Vick is going to run all over this D.
we need a LOT more than just that my friend.
The only thing we needed in our old 4-3 defense was a SLB and FS. We could've gotten Aaron Kampman or AJ Hawk from Green Bay and put Kareem Moore at FS, and move Landry back to SS. If we had a 4-3 defense, we could have had a d-line of Carter, Golston, Haynesworth, and Orakpo tearing shit apart. Fletcher would be playing his natural MLB position and be a beast in the middle. |

I've already divested my seat on the wagon and watching it as it heads towards the edge of the cliff. Best of luck to all those who are still on board...I hope Superman comes through and rescues you. |

Does it surprise you that people jump ship so quickly? I know everyone is a little upset especially after losing to the Rams, but to become so discouraged so soon sounds nothing like the energy that ignited this forum just a couple months ago. Where did it all go? |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
I agree the switch to the 3-4 was a big mistake, but we have an offense problem also. Donovan hit 7 different guys with passes, but only to 2 WRs for 7 grabs total(Moss had 6, Roydell 1). Bradford hit 9 different guys, but hit pretty much most of his Wrs. We simply do not have the overall talent to compete. Going back to the 4-3 would help the D somewhat, but we still have massive depth issues all around.

Sorry dude, I never trusted this whole switch to the 3-4. I mean, how the hell can you beat anyone after getting beat by the Rams? Here's the rest of our schedule... @ Eagles (L) vs. Green Bay (L) vs. Indy (L) @ Bears (L) @ Detroit (??) We could easily be 1-6 or 2-5 by the bye week. |

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
We do not have the personnel for this D, that seems pretty clear. But the die has been cast: we are going this way, come hell or high water, so it seems. We're going to have to get used to being weak on D this year, and then we'll see what the draft and offseason bring. My guess is we'll get better as players get used to the system and coaches figure out the least bad group to get out there. But we're in transition and it ain't going to be pretty for a while.
Stick with the plan and build through the draft. And don't start firing people at week 3--that's been our problem (or at least thinking that way has been). We were 4-12 last year. You can't change that overnight. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
he has about 4 more games to turn it around, but if we keep regressing the way we are i just don't see how we can keep him here for another year. last year the d was not our biggest worry and if anything you could say we upgraded our talent level this year, i really didn't think it would be this bad.

But your right, our personal is not even close for the scheme. |

I don't mind a "win-now" attitude, but I don't understand how you are going to win when you switch to a new defensive scheme that doesn't fit our personnel. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
I think the biggest thing about Haslett has been that he's too easy to solve. This is the third week in a row now where we have been the better team heading into halftime and only to come out and get absolutely stomped on.
We have potential, but Haslett has to start adjusting his plays, rather than continue to blitz his linebackers because he feels like only he's able to do it. |

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Have faith. I am not going to give up this easy. A win or two the next 3 weeks and we are back in this thing. It is too early to give up. Come guys we will get em next week. Whenever we are 2 and 6 then we can think about giving up. HTTR!!!!!

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
It is too early to talk about firing Haslett. That said, our defense sure has taken a great step down. The dominant image of our defense this year is an informal huddle of defensive backs who are trying to sort out who should have covered whom after a play. It has happened again and again.

I agree and say they beat the Eagles next week. In order to do that, changes need to be made. |
