Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
The Positive
Yes,we played like warmed up garbage against one of the worst teams in the NFL. No doubt about that! But there are some things we need to keep in mind, before jumping off a bridge... We got Philly this weekend, who is red hot! A win @ Philly puts us back in 1st place with a 2-2 overall record and a 2-0 Division Record.(2-1 conference record) We also get Trent Williams back instead of Heyer..(he could have played, but I think the coaches did the smart thing in resting him for 3 very tough opponents coming up(Philly,G.B. and the Colts) Our running game looked a lot better, although it was against the Rams. Maybe with Portis,Williams,ATV and Simpson,it will give Shanahan more tools to work with against opponents. Gano is looking good. Been a long time we had a kicker I didn't feel nervous about. If they can avoid the stupid ST's blunders on the FG teams,we will be fine. (Hunter Smith will be holding for him,if we sign him cause we won't have 2 Punters active on game day) This could be good as well. Hunter also gives us the fake FG or Punt as he throws the ball well...A new dimension to the ST's we should have kept all along. (should have kept him in the 1st place) My vents.... We need to find a way to get Brandon Banks back on the practice squad or 53 man roster...(But I have a feeling he will be scooped up through waivers...this was a very bad move imo) We desperately need his speed on the field. Do we really need Roydell Williams that bad or newly signed RB Chad Simpson? I simply just don't understand this move, but the coaches know better than me. We can use Banks on screens, returns or whatever. He may have fixed his fumbling for all we know, but his homerun ability and natural speed an RAC as a receiver can not be overlooked for moving the ball downfield for 1st downs. This team is not very fast and cutting the fastest guy on the team with lots of promise or keeping him on the practice squad is not very smart imo... Haslett needs to have a team meeting or Fletcher does or someone... We go from allowing 7 pt's against Dallas to 30 pt's in back-to-back games against the Texans and Rams... That is just not acceptable!!:angry-smi If they don't fix this problem, than Philly will drop 50+ pt's on us with the way we are covering receivers. I don't know if it's the tackling, the 3-4 scheme or what, but I did notice something yeesterday that I DID NOT LIKE AT ALL... I saw our CB's playing off the Rams WR's 10 yards off the ball or more...And after the quick slants and passes by Bradford, there was no adjustment. Why did he not Blitz this game? Or play not as aggressive as the previous 2 games...? Did the Texans game scare Haslett or something? Allowing all those yards... If you would have told me that Greg Blache coached this last game against the Rams,I would have believed you... Time to end the Shanahan VS Haynesworth pissing contest and get him on the field somehow...It's one thing to have an ego and prove a point,it's another when it's a detriment to the teams success. What, you didn't see Haynesworth cave in the o-line of the Rams on that goalline stance last night? Play the damn dude Shanny...!!:angry-smi Or haslett! Why are we not using Fred Davis and Chris Cooley as weapons? (They were against the Texans and that was a dose of what could be?) I don't feel like they are being used the way they should...maybe I'm missing something...It's not Mcnabb...it's more of the playcalling Whazup Kyle? Anyways...just wanted to say... Next Sunday against the eagles imo, could be the turning point of the season Like I said before...we win and we're 2-2 overall with a 2-0 division record and a 2-1 conference record with G.B. coming to our backyard and sitting in 1st place.... We lose and were 1-3 overall with a 1-1 division record and a 1-2 Conference record and in bad shape. So,let this one go guys...next weeks game against the Eagles is HUGE!! I think we can do it,but we got to play better defense than this... |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
You're dreaming if you think we'll beat the Eagles. This will be our biggest loss all season. Sorry, Im done dreaming.
|
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
The skins historically play UP against good teams and DOWN against bad teams. Lets hope they have some pride and actually show up to this game..... Haynesworth actually said the team looked past the Rams, and it showed.
|
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
I say in the NFL everything can change on a dime. It would not shock me if we win next week at all.
|
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Definitely not time to panic. Just gotta get back to work this week and continue to work on the things we're not doing well.
|
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
I would like our chances a hell of a lot more if Shanahan would stop playing head games and get guys like Devin Thomas on the field. Thomas is running like his hair is on fire returning kickoffs. It's almost like Shanahan wants to prove that he can marginalize his predecessor's overhyped receiver and still win. The problem here is that Thomas is the most physically gifted WR on the active roster. He is clearly working hard enough on special teams to warrant a play or two with the offense, but no, it's much more satisfying to play head games, at the team's expense.

Im not too worried about it. Heyer-Lichensteiger-rabach-hicks- j brown seems too much like last seasons patch work. We can expect this year and perhaps some of next year to have growing pains. 2012 watch out!! |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
They will be beat the Eagles this week. Things I would like to see:
Stop the run Do something about those short passes and play action plays, they have been getting killed for the last 2 weeks and I see no adjustment. |
You're dreaming if you think we'll beat the Eagles. This will be our biggest loss all season. Sorry, Im done dreaming.
If you have been a Redskins fan as long as some of us, you should know that to count on the Redskins to lose against the Eagles in a blowout is a fantasy. The Eagles even with McNabb and Co. couldn't blow us out. Even Zorn beat the Eagles! No matter how well a team plays against another team, it is hard to reproduce that week after week and especially against a division rivalry. This game makes for an Air McNabb victory. He will be ready to play. Trent Williams is back. Ryan Torrain will surprise the Eagles. And Kyle Shanahan will dial up pass plays in the redzone. I predict Redskins 28, Eagles 21. |

Wouldn't shock me either. I think they got caught peeking ahead on the calendar. I do expect we'll see a sharper and more focused effort next week. |

You said it. I'm confident this will be the outcome. Has been our MO for years now. If the team is good, count on the Skins showing up or pulling an upset. If the other team sucks, the Skins will bury them for three straight quarters and pack it in. That's how we roll. |

McNabb and Shanhan will be ready for this one! Too much is at stake and the playcalling in the redzone will be successful. Trent Williams, Kareen Moore and Anthony Armstrong are back. 3rd down conversions will be prevented and we win. 28, 21 |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
I'm not a huge gambler, but if you want to lay some money down...this is the game to do it imo...
I think were 6.5 or 7 pt underdogs...probably the only reason it isn't more is because we have a QB. We usually play our division rivals pretty tough, no matter how bad we suck. (with the exception @Giants) I would imagine Shanny and Mcnabb will have a huge chip on their shoulder this game. Hopefully,Haslett does too.... I'm not questioning Shanny cause he's working with new players and has done a decent job at getting pt's on the board. 13,27 and 16 Yea not great, but were not laying 3 or 7 pt eggs on the field like last season. Were just not getting TD's in the redzone. We fix that and we will be much better. If haslett doesn't get this D fixed and fixed fast,i will be jumping on the fire Jim Haslett bandwaggon very soon!!! Not yet,but he has me concerned a little... We need to have a big Defensive performance against the eagles, for me to feel a little better. I don't expect us to shut them down, but I want to see sacks and forced fumbles and INT's or we won't stand a chance!! |

Anyways...just wanted to say... Yeah, we lost but we move forward onto Sunday and beat Philly, we are 2-0 in the division. Screw all problems- the team has to stay focused on winning the division b/c that is going to be the key to getting into the post season. I am not going into panic mode and will be silent on Haslett for the rest of the week b/c of ACEINTHEHOUSE. Thank you for sound reasoning ! |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
I had said this would be a test of the "new" attitude, and well I guess they failed. They ended up looking past this team and looked pathetic on the field.
That said. I expect we will play Philly better, and one can only hope that McNabb knows their CB's better than anyone. Really Really sickened by yesterday's game tho'. Just was another round of the same old Skins :( |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
We simply do not have the players. We're a 4-12 team that has a better QB, better offensive scheme but a defense that doesn't fit and a tough schedule. 4-6 wins is probably keeping things in perspective.
|
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Another positive to see from this loss...
I HATE losing to the Rams, but I would rather lose to a team, that most likely will not make the playoffs, than lose the tie-breaker on a team in another conference because they too are 9-7 or 10-6. Not saying the Rams can't make the Playoffs in the crappy NFC West, but most likely they would have to win the division, since I see only 1 team out of that conference making the Playoffs anyways...the division winner. So it's almost better to lose to the rams who have no shot at the playoffs, than like say....The Bears or even the Bucs maybe? See what I mean. So if we were to lose say the lions and rams but beat the Bucs and Bears or even packers for that matter... We could possibly get a wildcard if say we were 9-7 and the Bears were 9-7,but we get in because of a head-to-head victory.... Other than a conference loss hurting us...if we regroup and go 9-7 or 10-6...we don't have to worry about losing a tiebreaker to a 6-10 rams team for that last 6th seed.. See what I mean? I guess what I'm saying is....In the NFL,it's almost better to lose against the real bad teams, than to lose to 9-7..10-6 playoff contenders in your own conference..do to the head-to-head playoff elimination process. That's all... |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
I agree. But the way we lost was SO disheartening. IF we can figure out a way to beat Philly then yes we are right in it, if we lose again then have the Colts and GB we are looking at a big time FAIL this year.
I was a little to optomistic about the switch to the 3-4. We are getting gashed in the run and pass. We shall see though there is still 13 weeks left to this year and plenty of time to get this thing fixed. |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
So in my post above...
it would almost be better if we lose to the Rams,Lions,Texans,Colts,Titans,Jags and beating GB,Bears,Bucs and Vikings.... And say...go 5-1 in the division... That's a 9-7 record But if the Lions and Rams are both out of playoff picture and our other 4 losses are to AFC teams... and lets say The eagles win east division at 11-5 (example) Packers win North at 12-4 Saints win South at 11-5 and Seattle wins West at 10-6 And say the last 2 wildcard spots are open to Bears 9-7 Redskins 9-7 Bucs 9-7 Falcons 10-6 Dallas 9-7 (we sweep them) Vikings 9-7 Falcons get 5th seed Guess who gets the 6th? Plenty of games guys... This eagles game is a biggie! |

I agree. We've done some purging and adding but we have many of the players we had last year. Better coaching, better qb, but similar talent. I was thinking 8 wins would be a ceiling for this group. Higher than 8 wins I'd be shocked. Give it time. New coach, new GM, new system. It's hard to do, but give these guys some time. |

Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Kind of reminds me of the first year of Gibbs 2.0.
It is disheartening to lose against a team like the Rams, but we have to remember, it isn't going to happen within one season. Let's at least get into year two before we start jumping off the cliff. |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Lets see, people, we've changed:
1. Whole front office and coaching staff 2. Starting QB 3. Offensive system 4. Defensive system 5. Most starters on O-line 6. Many starters playing different positions (mostly on D) It will take a little time to get everything running smoothly, it's to be expected. The defense especially will take some time with a big transition from 4-3 to 3-4. As the title says, don't panic, people. I believe we'll see an anti-Zorn year. Horrid at first, firing on all cylinders by year end. 2-6 first half and 6-2 second half...completely conceivable. We're fixing a 4-12 team...it can't be done overnight but I am confident in the majority of the changes made. Now, just replace Rabach and Sundberg. Welcome back Albright and Hunter the Punter. Also, I don't understand all of the Portis bashing going on post game. He looked GREAT yesterday, breaking longer runs, averaging over 6 yd/carry, without Trent Williams blocking for him. He was nicked up coming into the game. He wasn't benched for performance, I believe his wrist got aggravated. We need CP, especially his blocking. Torain did equally-well. Credit most of the O-line. Kareem Moore, nice return to action. |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Ok I'll be honest that was a long post from the OP, and no I didn't finish all. But I got the jist of it.
I'm pretty sure you saying almost what I was saying last night after I calmed down. I came here and saw the ..."Lets string Haslett and fire him" thread and could only laugh. Then there was the whole lets cut this player and the player cause they suck comments. lol. We are 3 games into the season. We have a new HC, OC, DC, and all the coaching staff below them, new scheme on both sides of the ball, new QB, new OL, new DL, and just because they are not a SB team right now we need to scrap everything yet again and start over yet again. How about everyone take a deep breath and calm down, enjoy or don't enjoy the games the team wins or loses on Sundays and allow this organization, coaching staff, and players to figure this thing out, bring in the right players, and correct the problems. How about we talk stability for a change. Give the team a chance to succeed vs. automatically labeling them losers and screaming to fire everyone "yet again" and putting people in place who will be destined to fail because there is no patients in DC. |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
It's hard not to panic when this team goes out and performs exactly the way we didn't want to see .. the exact same way we have dealt with for the past 20 yrs .. THESE types of games were exactly what McNabb and Shanny were brought here to avoid .. we are 1-2 and yes Philly is this weekend .. but if you don't think some of the mojo that was steam rolling towards this game is gone your nuts ... the Eagles are as Hot as they have ever been .. that crowd is going to be going crazy ... i knew we lost that game after 5 min .. it was just one of those lazy ass games that we do after big games .. i'm so pissed off at this team because i know they are better than that performance .. i hope they are as pissed off as we are ... all that being said .. this game is the season, i know it's early but think back to when the Giants were 1-2 and the Skins' were leading them at halftime and they came back and won that game and then went on to the Super Bowl .. this is our moment to knock the Eagles off .. it's just a matter of if we can do it or not ... god damn that Rams game .. God dammit to hell

We shall see though there is still 13 weeks left to this year and plenty of time to get this thing fixed.
I don't mean to poke at a possum when he's down but I think we all figured there would be growing pains with the 3-4, especially since we don't have the right players for the scheme but Haslett is the secondary issue. I tried to point out when talk was out there that the team was interviewing him. I asked what has he done in the NFL period besides being a player? DC of the Saints? the defense sucked. HC of the Saints? the defense sucked. DC of the Rams? the defense sucked. HC of the Rams? the defense sucked. When I was basically called an idiot I gave up and figured perhaps I could be wrong and he'll shine here. Now I'm simply hoping it is just needing the right players for the scheme which will take a few years to fix. I think Haslett needs to atleast pick one thing... either run or pass but not both at this point and decide that is what we will be completely shutting down. I still think this team is better then 8-8. |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Football is as much mental as it is about coaching and talent...
I knew that when we lost that Texans game, that this game was going to be more difficult to win. Not because we lost to the Texans, but in the way we lost. Not only did we have a 17 pt lead and blew it in the 4th Qtr,but we actually won the game on a Gano 52 yard FG and then the TO as he kicked it...then he missed and we lose. Those kind of games stay with you, no matter how mentally strong you are. Then we go on the road to whom we assume is the easiest game of the year and get surprised by how Bradford is playing and just look totally out of sinc. I PROMISE you...we win that game against the Texans...we beat the Rams as well... So now we find ourselves in a possible season turnaround or season ending game imo... Do we come out uninspired and lay another egg,as Mcnabb being the only guy on the team who gives a damn, wanting to prove the eagles wrong? Or do we challenge the Eagles and play the way we all know we can, like in the Dallas game and challenge every play and tackle well and make big plays on offense like the Texans game...? Thus, pulling out a huge win and upset and turning our season around and going 2-0 in the division? We will see very soon! |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Its not like we played a bad team that over-achieved, we LOST to a bad team. There are some positives to take away from the games, but the negatives are huge. Poor game plan/play calling coupled with our "playmakers" falling short (pun intended, but not solely directed at CP). The same things we were not supposed to see under MS. They don't get a pass becasue its a new this or that. The head coach is supposed to put the best team possible on the field and win the games you are supposed to and a few your not. We SHOULD be 3-0, at 1-1 the team used there "get out of jail card" in loss to Texans. 1-2, losing to the Rams after blowing a win at home, is garbage but its still early enough to fix some things.
Now comes the real test. |

Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Yeah I was never in love with the idea of Jim Haslett as the DC. I warmed to the idea when you looked at his Ds while he was in Pitt and I thought there may be a chance for some of that here, but at this point we just do not have the personel. I don't thnk there is a easy fix at all, and yes Haslett is definately part of the problem but he could be part of the solution if he can get this thing turned around. If not MS will fire his ass either during the season or next offseason.
Mike does run through DCs like nobodys business. Where is GW when you need him? Oh yeah winning championships with the Saints. |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Even after the Texans loss I still thought this could be a playoff team... but not anymore. We are capped at 6-10.
But no need to panic people, we should be used to this by now. Go back to whatever you were doing and I'll see you all next offseason. |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
Take a look at the 2009 Jets season:
2009 New York Jets season - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This is probably the best case scenario for this team this year and I even go to say just a playoff birth would be awesome. Much like the 09 Jets season we are in a bump in the road but there is enough talent in the room both on the field and in the booth to believe we could make a run like them this year, not saying NF Champ game but at least playoffs. |

This year they are suffering from a suspect d-line (esp the DTs), they are thin at LBs, and are starting a converted CB as their FS (replacing Darren Sharper). In past seasons I've felt that we needed an offense good enough to compliment our defense. Now that we have that, we've gone ahead and start with a brand new defensive scheme. Now we have a semi-decent offense to go along with our growing-pains defense. |

The falcons lit them up yesterday...And the putrid Niners who were dominated by the Chiefs....were able to put up 20+ pt's against that "awesome" Gregg Williams defense. I think Bradford NOW..is better than Alex Smith... IMO...Gregg Williams is way overrated You guys want a very good D-coord? We should hire Marty Schottenheimer Now that guy is good for the Defense! Can't win the big game as Head Coach but as a D-Coordinator...OMG! (and shanny on Offense) This team would be awesome..
GW is a very good D coord. He's historically had great defenses w/ teams w/out alot of names. Saints aren't a great defense but they do a good job of creating TO's. |
Re: Lets keep things into perspective and not panic people!
The Bleeping Rams beat the Skins by 2 TDs and dominated the second half of the game and the way that all of this will be turned around is to re-sign Brandon Banks? It took me at least 10 seconds to be able to get my jaw back up off the floor after that...
Folks, the reason everyone seems to be so outraged today is that the expecations for this team were unrealisticly high to begin with. Mike Shanahan is a good football coach - - but he does not have a magic wand. Jim Haslett is a defensive coordinator who has had some good defenses and some bad defenses - - depending on the talent he had to coach on those defenses. This year, he has middling talent; it is not the worst in the league by a longshot; it surely is not near the best either. Remember when Bill Clinton ran for Pres in 1992? His advisors kept reminding everyone in the campaign, "It's the economy, stupid." Let me remind: "It's the talent, stupid." The Redskins are not "talent-rich". Nonwetheless, they have more talent than the Rams and they should beat teams like the Rams on the basis of superior talent; so there is something else going on there. My personal hypothesis - - which I cannot prove - - is that the veteran Redskins players have lived in a pampered environment long enough to believe that all they have to do is show up against an "inferior" opponent and the "inferior" opponent will quiver in fear. Sadly, that usually does not happen... This team will be in the upper echelons only after they purge the players who play inferior teams by mailing it in and replacing them with solid draftees and free agent signings of football players - - not guys with stats who want to be paid. The Redskins have signed a ton of the latter and rarely do they ever work out here in the pampered envrioment that leads them to believe they really are as great as they think they are. |
