Portis heard his groin "pop" (out 4-6 weeks)

washingtonpost.com
"I heard it pop," Portis said of his left groin, and he immediately went to the trainer's table behind the Redskins' bench. He stretched himself back out, and reappeared for the first series of the fourth quarter - only to gain two yards, and aggravate the injury again.
Doesn't sound good.

Maybe they should trade with Buffalo for either Jackson or Lynch now that Portis is done for a while. Rumor has it the eagles want Lynch since McCoy has a broken rib.

Lynch wouldn't be a bad fit if we don't have to give up anything .. he seems like the kinda RB that's just in a bad situation with a bad team

McCoy played most of the game with it. I sure hope he isn't out long. I have him on 3 fantasy teams...

I'm probably a bad person but i actually root for Portis to get hurt during games, because our running game improves no matter who takes over. Wish him the best, anywhere else.

Except for Portis, the new regime actually seems to hold people accountable for performance. One more hurdle down to being a real team.

I'm just waiting for the point in the season where they figure out they really don't NEED Portis.

Other than blocking on blitzes...

Cp has looked great this season IMO for the amount of carries I would guess he's over 4 yards a carry. This would be a bad blow, more than u guys think. As for lynch? Trade DT for Lynch.

I think they were at this point.

I don't understand all the recent CP hate, his production in a committee role was pretty good and he is one of the best picking up the blitz in the league.

If Portis is done, it does not help our team.

Very true, and in more ways than one. Shanahan has kept a nice toasty fire on his ass this season. First, with practice wonder Larry Johnson, and this week with Ryan Torain. Gibbs gave Portis "star treatment", and Portis welcomed it.

I'm actually really excited to see what Ryan Torrain can do, if he starts this week. I still think Portis is a great 3rd down back, but his best days are clearly behind him.

Portis still has plenty in the tank, but yeah he had already hit the apex of his career when Gibbs was here. I like what I saw from Torain, but CP blocks better, and still seems to be more physical than him. CP out for awhile doesn't bode well for us. Torain can't do it alone.

So I guess Torain trucking over Mikell was a fluke? When was the last time Portis trucked anyone? Although I guess Portis is known more for speed than power. But his cuts are always sloppy... dude's always losing his footing... the Eagles game was better, but I still thought Torain was better. Portis can't even seem to stay healthy anymore. What's the point of having him when a new injury pops up after every game so far? Hand, ankle, groin. He's been hanging around Haynesworth a little too much? :Smoker:

Torain can't block for squat, but blocking is coachable, being on the downward trek of your career is inevitable, which I feel is where Portis is going. His better years are behind him, the guy is a 2nd stringer, 3rd down back at best.

Well this was Portis' last year here anyway and I think his production was pretty good. Torain was going to get plenty of chances regardless. CP going down is pretty bad for this team.

Google searching tells me that it may be the muscle tearing. My search was not too thorough, but it did net a WebMd result.

I would hate to have to trade for another RB. I think the Iggles game showed what a good RB tandem can do for our team (see Thomas Jones/Shonn Greene last year).

re: Portis heard his groin "pop" (out 4-6 weeks)

I dont understand the hate for Portis either...
The guy has stellar blocking skills and has shown a burst this year.
We had 3 over the hill backs on the squad and Torrain didn't even make the squad.
Even though I thought Torrain would have made the initial cut, I don't trust that he can be a starter in this league....I wish it...but wishing doesn't make it true...and a good GM should never put his trust in a wish. If Portis is seriously injured....we may be forced to make a trade for a decent back...because everyone knows....without Portis, we don't have a starting quality back.

I didn't see the first quarter...so I must be missing all the glory you guys are dumping on Torrain...what I saw was a back that didn't know when to turn upfield and make something out of nothing..and I really dont know if I'd get excited over 1 quarter of work when no team has game planned for you yet. I bet Portis would have done great this year if the blocking was there...that is the real issue...this team has only had 1 game with decent rushing numbers so far...so don't think the situation is resolved.

I like the idea of trading DT for a good back if needed.

And as for Gibbs ruining Portis...that's BS...he a RB...you run him till his tongue falls out when all you have is a running game....then you get a new one.
Remember...he got us to the playoffs twice. At least Gibbs USED all his talent...
Is it better overutilize your talent or underutilize it?
The current coaching staff has been a bit guilty of the latter.

re: Portis heard his groin "pop" (out 4-6 weeks)

This should be the end of the road for Portis. Everybody knew because of his declining production plus his huge bloated salary, that this was his last season.

Torain is ready to step into his role this season and should be our feature back next season. CP could stay here as a 3rd down back if he agreed to a salary cut (which he wouldnt, and if he got healthy.

But i think more likely the redskins let him go for a low draft pick 4th round pick, or something like that. I see a release possibly, if he wont agree to a trade, or if he refuses to sign a pay cut. Either way he is probably gone in 2011.

Torrain didnt do anything spectacular, but he did show he can get consistent yardage per carry. Portis is a skilled RB and his experience alone makes him a better RB than Torrain at the moment. But Portis cant break a tackle to save his life these days and is extremely injury prone.

I agree with you that a RB should be ran and ran and ran. Riggo sure didn't have a problem with it in his day. But when its time to replace the RB then it's time to replace the RB.

I love Portis but...It's Time!

I can understand why some here are tired of CP, he obviously draws a lot of attention to himself. what I think comes off wrong is people that seem to imply being a 3rd down back means he's done. Kevin Faulk, who was never even a starter, has made a career of being a 3rd down rb in NE. He's 33 or 34!

If CP can keep his tude in check & play for a reasonable salary (he ain't gettin big bucks anywhere else) he could be here for 3-4 more solid years playing as a 3rd down back. He's as good as any in the nfl at picking up the blitz, he's a better blocker than our TEs.

I agree. In addition, he is not a bad receiver as a check down.

I just don't know if he can handle the fact that he isn't the runner he was four years ago, check his ego at the door and get the job done. He's never (IMHO) shown that kind of maturity. I guess I think he is one of those "I try. I do what the coaches tell me to do. Therefore, when I fail, it's someone else's fault." Critical self analysis does not strike me as CP's strength.

Clinton Portis has served us well and has been loyal to the organization. that goes a long way in the locker room. his production has been down for the past few years but so has our O-line. with the line getting in more reps our running game will get better no matter who is in the back field. I'm happy to have portis, he works harder then any other back we've had this season, injuries... yeah, but if he wasn't going all out for the skins he'd already be gone. if anything i think we should look at trading away some real wasted talent like fat Albert and get some draft picks and young talent. (sustainability). isn't their a Heisman trophy winner going into the draft this year? i can think of a few teams that need a d-tackle. shoot i also know of a wide out (randy moss) that said this is his last year on the pats.......
