Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

I mean the skins have some wishy washy fans to say the least but this season seems to be So up and down..

I was just reading the official fire jim haslett Thread and their was members Shouting literally Shouting that our Defense is never gonna do anything and we shouldda stayed 4-3.

Just wondering if you guys think our whole season is gonna be up and down like the first 5 weeks or are the skins gonna find that happy medium we're all praying for ?

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

I thought this team would be 8-8 by the end of the season, but I didn't know they'd be cutting it close, and I mean a scapel grazing your jugular close, for multiple weeks in a row.

This is a transition year, I think it will continue.

I don't know i feel like itll be an up and down year but we seem pretty resilient in close games in my opinion.

The Haslett thread was started way long ago. And in fact we are a lot worse statistically as in yardage given up. But every fan base has positive guys (Kool-aid drinkers) and their negative guys (realists).

As for the season, I think the closeness of these games has definitely been off the chart. We may become the new improved cardiac pros

If we finish 11-5, I'll be surprised. If we finish 5-11, I'll be surprised.

Otherwise it seems like the normal ups-and-downs of an NFL season with a bit more parity thrown in.

I said 9-7 with a WC and I'm sticking to it.. But I also had Dallas winning the east at 10-6

Not surprised at all. I said 9-7 team before season...feel like we are headed that way.

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

Not really suprised about the games being so close. I'm thinking we should se something come together towards the end of the season. So far, I'm pretty happy. Last two years, we were close every game. We would find a way to lose, however we are now finding a way to win close games. We need to blow a couple of teams out, or I'm going to have a stroke.

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

I never thought that I would see the day that guys complained when we are currently 1 game out of 1st place in the entire NFC.
I can understand the frustration though because like always the offense hasn't been putting up that many points. On the other side of the ball where we used to be stout we are giving up a lot of yardage.

The one constant is that defensively, despite the yardage, we aren't giving up a lot of points. At the same time, due to the defense's inability to get off of the field on third down; our offense is not always getting a short field (more of the same from years past).

I can say that the one area that we have gotten better is in special teams, particularly on kick returns and the kicking game.

Now, when I think about this season I ask myself one question "How are we looking against the league?" and despite all of my problems with the team and considering what we looked like last season, I am pretty pleased. The team has turned a few things around.

With all of that being said I expect this team to start being real contenders in the next year or so. This season is looking like a little bit of collateral damage from our past, but you can actually see some things turning around and at the moment it seems that we are heading in the right direction.

That is the most insightfull post that you will see from me for an entire year so enjoy it.

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

Something everyone also should note:

Many are very upset that we have the 31st or 32nd worst defense in the League on giving up yardage...

But what you never hear,is that 2 of our 5 games so far....
Have been in Overtime!

That's a lot of extra minutes for extra yards added to the game total.

I would love to find out how much extra minutes from both OT's we have played are, in total number of minutes played....

Just something to think about...

The thing I think is funniest is that optimists are considered Kool-aid drinkers but pessimists are considered realists.

I consider them wet blankets.

I noticed that, too. I consider realists to be somewhere between kool-aid on one hand and wet blanket on the other.

I do not think it is surprising. A good coached team with a not-terrible quarterback with almost no talent around him. Kinda is reminiscent of denver last year.

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

Well, I was on board with the Haslett Sux Fire his ass campaign after another disappointing loss to the Rams. (Who BTW arent as bad as years past)

I will be the first to tell you. I am a fan or a fanatic when it comes to the Redskins.

I try to stay even keel but sometimes after watching our team come out and play with no heart against a team we should beat 8 out of 10 times brings out the worst in me.

This team has shown me something over the last 2 weeks and I believe they will carry it over to Sunday.

This season may end up like gibbs 2.0's first year where we were competitive in every game but came out with a 6-10 record, but we are figuring a way out to win games in the end instead of lose them.

The biggest thing I want to see out of the team is to watch them COMPETE every Sunday. We are getting that now, the Rams game it didnt seem as though this team was ready to even play that game. So that is going to fire this FAN up!

Anyway rant over, I love my team, and I want to win every Sunday. AND if heads hae to roll to accomplish this I will let you know. :)

Even though I may be wrong. :cheeky-sm

The season is always roller coaster if you're basing this on fan opinion, hell it's roller coaster from one play to the next!

On the field it's about what I expected. I think we're an 8-10 win team.

Longtimefan 10-16-2010 10:02 AM

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

Before the season started I predicted 8-8 because I thought a four game improvement over last year was reasonable.

Thus far, it hasn't been so much about W's & L's but more about how the games have been played. I mentioned in another thread, some fans just don't want to adjust to this style of winning.

the backlash against haslett was justified. he wasn't making any adjustments. it's probably going to be like this the rest of the year cause this team is short on top tier players.

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

I paid for the NFL Tickets to see the Skins every week as I am an out of state fan! I told my wife that if the season continues with the close games into next season there will be no need to pay for the ticket as they are always showcased on NFL Replay.

This is a reality right now...We are evolving! We were losing these games last year. This year winning them. Maybe soon we will be blowing teams out the water. Until then I will enjoy the wins however they come. Last year was miserable!

I don't usually post during games but I do like reading the "we suck, games over" posts in the first quarter and the "yes, we pulled it out" in the 4th quarter.

They aren't wishy washy fans, they just think realistic instead of slurping heavily on the "cloud 9" kool-aid. On a different note, I can't recall a season in which the play on the field doesn't really reflect what the record may show.

Depends on what your definition of "realistic" is, if you read the gameday threads, that's wishy-washy.

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

I thought this thread was about the NFL season in general. It's been a roller coaster, one week the Cards look like a lock for getting the #2 overall pick in the draft (#1 going to the Bills), the next week they beat the Saints. I really don't see a complete dominant team in each conference, although it is early in the season.

The health of the players will determine our possible arrival into 'happy medium' world. Reason being we are still thin in a few spots and we are just now finding the right combination of players to use help us win more consistently.
Lorenzo Alexander in place of A. Carter, Lichtenstiener for Dockery, using C. Wilson and Hanyesworth more. Kareem Moore and Dirty 30 stepping up their play. Got to love it. Hasslett dialing down a bit the blizes and being more selective with it.
But we are paper thin to RB and to a lesser degree at few spots on the O-line. We are an injury away or two away from problemville. Hopefully Torrain, Keiland Williams, Anthony Armstrong and Lichtenstiener will blossom into stars and accelerate our way into happy medium world.

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

So long as we keep on getting more games we "should" lose (Dallas, Philly, and Green Bay) and fewer of those that we "should" win (St Louis and Texas) I'll be fine. ;-)

I think we're learning the 3-4, so we should get better, but I feel like they're forcing the personnel into the package. I would like it better if we could be flexible and put more of the players in positions which are their strengths.

I also think that the moment they can use Banks as a wide receiver it stretches the field and opens up spaces underneath. (He'll have to develop into it.)

yeah! that's probably what rypper11 was refering to in his post. Those game day threads are a trip.

Re: Anyone Else Surprised at the roller-coaster season

I thought anywhere from 7-9 to 9-7 like I predicted last season. I am leaning more to the 9-7, but we are winning in ugly fashion. Our offensive line is totally inadequate to sustain a real running attack and is inconsistent in protecting Donovan. It is going to take a couple years to solve the depth problem. Trading AH for picks is going to help. We are going to have to consider drafting another RB in the near future on top of the usual positions that sorely need to be addressed, like the lines and defensive backfield.

Washington should have beaten the Texans though so this last game against us was a payback win for that game. I know how you guys felt after that game cause I felt the same way last sunday.

This is a schizophrenic team and has been for a while. If the Redskins surprise you I envy you.
