Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
Is anyone else bothered that we are almost half way into this season and our QB, Donovan still doesnt have a new contract??? I may be paranoid, but it makes me think that maybe Shanahan doesnt have faith in him to be his long-term QB.
We know with his injuries and advancing age, that McNabb maybe only had about 2 or 3 years left when he was traded here. Do you think that is a factor on why he hasnt been re-signed? Maybe they are worried about giving him big money when he could only have 1 year left or they dont want to sign him to a longer term deal because he is an injury concern.. I searched and hadn't seen any new threads on this in a while, and just wanted to weigh in now that the season is about halfway.... |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
Not bothered at all.
|
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
Well, be honest, if McNabb is just being graded on his play in Washington through 6 weeks, has he done anything to earn a contract extension.
He last played well in Week 2. 5 TDs, 5 INTs (one, yeah, on a hail mary). He's completing 58% of his passes. He'll be 34 in November. If it was your money, and not Dan Snyder's, are you paying that performance for the age 35-38 seasons? I don't think I would be able to. 10 more games though to turn it around. |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
Rumor is Shanahan wanted to give him 8-10 games to make sure he's his guy. Given how we've always been too quick to dish out monster deals in the past, I find this new approach refreshing actually. If McNabb isn't worrying why should we?
|
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
Because of CBA uncertainties, lots of guys are lacking contracts for next year. Plus we need to test drive McNabb before we purchase. I'm not concerned in the slightest.
|
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
No I am not, and yes DM has done enough to warrant a new big deal from Washington.
Name me one other reason other than #5 we have been in all of these tight games and why we have hope of winning them in the 4th quarter. Last night down by 10 to the /colts with 8:14 to go in the 4th I knew we still had a chance to win. I have not actually believed we coul make that kind of comeback with any other QB we have had here in the last 10 years or hell even since gibbs 1.0. #5 has brought respect back to DC |

That is a good approach, i agree. There is really nothing else Shanahan could have done. I suppose he was smart to not ink him to a big deal, like we've done in the past. This makes me think of when Joe Gibbs traded for Mark Brunell in 2004, and then signed him to a 7 year contract. Given Brunell's age at the time (34, IIRC), why in the world did he sign him for that long of a deal at that money?? |

Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
If McNabb cannot play any better then what I have seen from him this year I hope we dn't sign him to any new deal. The good news is his stock is dropping with each game so maybe by the end of the year we can sign him to a smaller contract not risking any big money on him.
|
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
I don't think anyone is worried about it. Finish the season strong and you get a big payday, get hurt and miss several games and you get measly pay day. The formula is real simple.

Unless his agent or his ego don't like that. He could always chose to go to a team like the 49ers who have a nice solid roster except for QB. |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
I am not concerned, I am grateful. I know that the fact we spent a 2 on him makes everyone want to sign DMac long term, but that value is already gone. I would say that to this point in time, he has not looked like a franchise QB. Now if they want to sign him to a 3 year deal while they groom his replacement, which personally I wouldn't think he'd agree to, then I would be behind that. Otherwise, if his play doesn't improve or gets worse, let him walk to AZ, MN or SF.
|
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
The counter to those who are saying its a good approach would be why cough up a draft pick to Philly then?
However, I think the real thing here is McNabb and his agent want to get inked for a big long term deal. Our guys dont think he deserves that and he has shown nothing to prove that so far. His market value is going down, so we should be able to ink him for a 2-4 years towards the latter end of this season. The truth is we need him because he is better any other option and we want him there as a solid QB while the next rookie we draft waits in the helm. |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
I'm not bothered but they need to sign him. They've invested draft picks so no way you let the guy walk after one year... unless they make a trade of their own to let's say San Fran and get back the picks. In McNabb's defense he needs better players around him.
|
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
I think a deal will be worked out in the end but Bruce Allen works very methodically, worst comes to worst they franchise him.
As I understand it, the Shanahans would like to lock him up for at least a couple more years though they've been "surprised by how poor his footwork is" (whatever that means) |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
They're not going to let him walk unless he proves he is just a complete disaster, and I don't see that happening. He's struggled as of late but we're not exactly helping the cause with poor protection at times and drops by the receivers. He'll get on track, not worried.
W/L record is what really counts, and all I know is a year ago we were 2-5 and in a free fall. |

You can add anyone you want to the roster but they still cannot catch a ball hitting the ground 5 feet in front of them or 5 feet over their head. He has also made some really bad decisions. I'm not totally against him because he has made some big game winning plays but they are stuck between allot of bad plays. He is becomming our version of Farve. |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
Im hoping that we draft an "Aaron Rodgers" and let him sit behind Mcnabb for 3 years then he will be our Qb for the future. Mcnabb is just our Game manager Qb for the next few years. If Mcnabb doesnt want to sign with us we will franhchise him and trade him. IMO Mcnabb sucks, but He is a good enough QB to win games Until we find the Franchise QB that we draft.

Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
For what it's worth, Peyton's agent said they weren't doing a deal until after the season's over, so I would imagine that would affect McNabb's contract negotiations.

I'm sure it will be brought up, but If I'm Bruce Allen, I laugh in his agent's face if they ask for anything approaching Peyton money. |

He's got a lot on his plate. |

Yeah but we all know what we were getting in McNabb and the coaches knew too. I guess they just need to work on his footwork and hopefully that will help. One of the Int's yesterday was on Galloway. He made no attempt on that ball and I have no idea how he made the team. |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
Still better than anything we've seen around here in at least 10 years, if not more. McNabb on his worst day is still better than the crop of noodle-arm crapola QB's we've had on their best days. He is a leader and the rest of the team rallies around him. There are intangibles that he brings other than just his on the field performance (which I think will improve as the season progresses). That being said, he did suck ass yesterday.

Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
Is anyone really surprised about his bounce passes? He has been throwing those since day one in Philly. Since he played basketball in college, I think he forgets he is on the football field at times.
However, the best option we have is McNubb. Period. |

I heard the same thing about 8-10 games and agree with your assessment. |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
I honestly believe our Defense can overcome "Some" of McNabbs mistakes...we are a turnover causing and sack machine.
What helps having Mcnabb over many other QB's is his ability to make things happen when they break down and the huge plays in crunch time. Yes,he had a bad game, but we still won. But he will also have those games where he lights it up. I don't want Mcnabb to play conservatively or scared because of bad plays... We had that in Soul Glo for way too long and that didn't take us anywhere. I want a QB that doesn't play scared....Plays to win Kind of like Rypien,Williams and Theismann...remember those guys? |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
I say at this point in the season, if Shanahan really is grading him per se, then McNabb has really only played "well" in 2 games, hardly enough to merit a contract extension or a big-money deal.
|
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
I think some are being a little harsh on McNabb. So he is not lighting it up. He is not losing games either. Give him time in this system and let our offensive line develop. The Shanahan's are also learning what works best for our players and they also need more time to get comfortable. It is a two way street. People seem to forget we were a 4-12 team last year and we were embarrassingly awful.
We have come a long way in a short time. Sign McNabb for continuity sake. Then we develop a young QB for the future. I think the impatient fans bitching about McNabb come from the old/former Dan Snyder school of football where we used to give up on a McNabb and signed a pricey FA instead. Then we are back to a new QB learning our system...again. Patience please. Lets build a team in a 2 to 3 years, instead of one offseason. |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
A fair contract, yes. A blockbuster one, no. I wouldn't be devestated if he wasn't resigned though. I wonder how Grossman would play in this offense, on this team.

Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
They will get it done and he will be here for awhile. Not worried about it.

We have got to learn to be somewhat patient and know that not everything is going to be turned around in one year. Snyder seems to be getting it, now we need to. |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
I think it's fair for one to be a little worried about McNabb not having a contract. The fact is we traded 2 fairly high draft picks for a 1 year rental. McNabb probably should have agreed to a contract before we spent 2 draft picks for a potential one year player.
I've heard MS wants to "try him out" after 8 games or so. I don't think it's wise nor was it the intention to send 2 draft picks to Phili, for a coach to try him out or see how he performs. That's a big gamble. A trade like this to means that both sides have to be committed long term at the time of the trade for it to be made initially. That's the issue i have. If he or we decide to walk, this was a huge front office blunder. I do think, though, that it will get done. I'm sure there are things we don't know. It is cause for concern. |
Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??
Also, by waiting it puts more pressure on the Skins to get it done and you know what more pressure means right? More money.
If the Skins don't get it done, it will look bad on their part. |

McNabb gave them 7 right away. We did not forget last year but a change in QB was not our only move and we do have new coaches. My problem with McNabb is the easy stuff he keeps throwing into the ground. |
