Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
Richie Petibon?? Is he the guy who went 4-12 after a whole lot of hype??
|
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
Yep, replaced Gibbs. I coached for many years, and there was an old saying. Dont replace a legend, replace the guy who replaces the legend and you'll be fine.

Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
You guys can knock Richie all you want, but he was the best DC this team has ever had. I wish we could have someone like him again.

Gregg Williams was just as good in my mind as Petibon was. Only difference is that GG didn't have the type of offensive support that Petibon got under Gibbs I. |

Not even close, most of Richie's personnel were mid to low round picks and FA's. |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
RP took over an old team that had just peaked a year earlier and was ripe for a big collapse. He really didn't get a fair shake as HC.
|
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
Petibon was a better DC than Gwilliams in my opinion.
Say what you want for Gibbs 2.0 but the combo of Gibbs and a high quality DC in Gwilliams sure did look good on paper....we did get to the playoffs a couple times after all I think Snyder did a good job on assembling a quality coaching staff there. The only problem was lack of talent in my opinion and a GM worth a crap of course. It was certainly worth a shot. Every effort since Gibbs 1.0 is to try to duplicate that magic combo. That is where I feel Hasslet falls short...as well as our oline guy...kinda dissapointed in him |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
There was some article last year about what Petitbon is up to these days. It was during the whole Zorn downfall in the 2nd half of last year.
I thought Petitbon was a fantastic defensive coordinator who had the poor timing of being a head coach during a year of transition for not only the Skins but the NFL (with the advent of modern day free agency I believe beginning that year). But when I watched the games back then it never really looked like he was enjoying himself as head coach. The stories I've heard from players/personnel who were with the team at the time were that several players were upset with the treatment he gave certain veterans like Art Monk, Earnest Byner, Mark Rypien (basically singling them out and making them earn their spots-like Marty did with DG); Petitbon and Casserly clashed a lot. Petitbon had been hoping he'd get the Bears job that year because he didn't want to deal with Casserly anymore, though at the time he was going for the Bears job he didn't know he'd be the Redskins head coach soon. Casserly didn't have quite the same problems with Petitbon but was upset that Petitbon was calling Casserly out at Redskins Park for not giving Petitbon a good enough team to work with. And finally, Petitbon was furious he was fired for a former Cowboy. Thought that was a slap in the face and for many years (maybe even still today) wanted nothing to do with the Redskins. |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
That's BS, Casserly gave Pettion "Reggie Brooks". That was enough talent right their with the holdovers to go to the SB.
|
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
Thanks for the info Smack! Mo Elewonibi, RP should have won 8 games with just him.

After a decade of just flat out dominating the NFL there's only one way to go and it ain't up. Petibon had no one on that roster...most Redskins ballers moved on, retired or were at the end of their careers. Anyone that blames Petibon for that terrible 1993 season has no clue. |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
During Richie's introductory press conference he stated it was going to be "business as usual" unfortunately for him, his opportunity came immediately following the first year free agency was introduced. He and Larry Peccatiello did the best they could with an aging and underachieving team. I always admired his methods, he had a different scheme for every team we played, the intent being to take away the strength of the opposition.

Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
So after Petibon was fired, was he out of the NFL?? Seems to me as successful of a defensive coach as he was, he would be able to find work again in the NFL, but i can't find anything on him.
He was only 56 years old when he was fired....he still had plenty of time to coach in the NFL...does anyone know where he went after leaving Washington??? |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
I think he just retired after that.

The hiring of Norvelle will always be associated w/a dark time in our beloved team's history to me, much more so than Petitbon's dismal 93 season. |

Before his one season at the helm, Richie was the best D-coordinator we ever had, and that includes Gregg Williams and Marvin Lewis.

That Bills team was basically "The Greatest Show on Turf" for that era, and Petibon's scheme battered them that day. Kelly was picked off 4 times, and Thomas, who led the league in yards from scrimmage, was held to 40 total yards. That game wasn't nearly as close at the 37-24 final score, with the Bills getting two TD's in garbage time after the Skins took a 37-10 lead going into the 4th quarter. I will always remember that defensive game plan as Petibon's Masterpiece.

The worst was James Washington and Alvin Harper. Simply awful. |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
IMO Ritchie might be one of the best defensive coordinators ever. If there was a HOF for assistants he'd be in there.

That whole time period makes me wanna vomit. When James Washington bowed down to all the Cowboys after they won that year. Pathetic. |

No kidding. He makes people mad now as a commentator too. He seems so damn sure of himself. Or rather he always seems pretty convinced that he's right. A very declarative person. That has to rub football people in the wrong way. |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
That video got me into searching for more Redskins videos on YouTube. I found the videos to the 1991 NFC Playoff game between the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Falcons. I thought it was funny how Jerry Glanville tried to intimidate the Redskins by sending the entire team out for the coin toss, instead of picking a few captains. And then of course the 'Skins go on to beat the Falcons.
Just think of the money that the NFL could make if they would make as many of the past games available to the public as they have in their archives. Lord knows I would purchase as many games from the 80's as I possibly could! |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
Man, I long for the time where we could dominate on defense like we did in those Super Bowls. Controlling the line of scrimmage was certainly not a problem then...

Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
Petitbon was the greatest DC that we've ever had. He would've been a good HC, but he suffered from inheriting a team that had grown old and Gibbs left him with nothing. The offensive line was as bad then as it is now. Casserly got the talent for Joe (except when Joe insisted on trading UP to draft Desmond Howard, who looked like a sure fire all pro, but couldn't run routes. Petitbon could change his defense at half time and come back out and demolish any opponent! Who coached the Broncos when they jumped out to a 10-0 lead and then Doug Williams destroyed them? I know Petitbon changed his defense and even Elway couldn't mount a comeback! But I hope Shanahan wasn't the Denver coach.
One thing about Shanahan, he shipped us Clinton Portis for a Hall of Fame CB PLUS a 2nd round draft choice. He looked like a genius in that trade. Plus he took an offensive guard that the Redskins cut (like we didn't need O-linemen then!) and he made at least two pro bowls blocking for Elway! |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
^ Dan Reeves
You've got your time frames all mixed up. Portis came after Elway. |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
I think he was talking about Schlereth. I think the Skins cut him because of injury risk.
He also made the Pro Bowl in 1998. I don't see any others from his Denver tenure. |

Jerry Glanville had him a full scale circus on the sideline. Hammer, Evander Holifield. Wow. |
Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube
Was he also the coach when we won against Miami? The Super Bowl was probably the reason they drafted Dan Marino the next year. They completed 4 passes all game. Since after halftime they had none (and only 2 first downs and 34 total yards), I guess we made a halftime adjustment! I remember I was watching with supporters for both teams. After Riggo scored we only had a 3 point lead with 10 minutes to play, but all the Miami supporters left because they knew they wouldn't score any more points! They scored their TDs on a 76-yard pass play on Miami's second series and a 98-yard KO return. (27-17 final score.)
