F...Blu Ray

Ok I love the better picture and video.

But... so many more previews now and they are nearly impossible to skip.

And why oh why do we still have the bars on some movies? I am playing a Blu Ray movie on a 16x9 screen yet Istill have f--king bars! Grrrr!!!!!

Also don't even get me started on Blu Ray movies just printed for Netflix, no bonus material and tons of previews, it sucks!

MTK 11-15-2010 02:21 PM

Re: F...Blu Ray

Movies are shot in odd formats that's why we still get the bars.
For example: Original HDTV programming is made in the 16x9 (1.78) as aspect ratio, which fits the dimensions of HDTVs. However, many theatrically films are made in either the 1.85 or 2.35 aspect ratio, which is even wider than the 16x9 (1.78) aspect ratios of HDTVs. Thus, when viewing these films on an HDTV (if presented in their original theatrical aspect ratio) - you will see black bars on your 16x9 screen. However, the bars will be less pronounced than if the same movie was letterboxed on a standard 4x3 set.

HDTV FAQs - Why are Black Bars Sometimes Still Visible on a 16x9 HDTV?
The unskippable previews really are f'ing annoying

Re: F...Blu Ray

Thanks Matty, they should just reformat them to fit 16x9 TV's.

Another annoying thing is some of them you can stop and resume no problem. Others you have to bookmark then stop to save your place. THEN on some of the Netflix ones you have to bookmark then when you go to resume you have to watch all the previews again to get to your bookmark.

My question is: Just who the hell uses these "special features" like integrated chat and being able to cut and splice your own edit of a movie... seriously, do people do this?!

I know those are dumb when I say special features I mean like commentary or deleted scenes, you know...

I also love the ones that like update the local weather for you on a widget, like I watch that movie every day of my life.

I hope to god not....reformatting equals stretching or clipping.

Yes they do...people are weird and they do weird things that are pointless and time consuming. One man's interest is another man's boredom.

No offense, if you like to recut the saden1 special edition of Harry Potter, then actively discuss with the hogwarts homies, more power to you man. Always thought those were features they added because they could (and it helped to justify the added cost of blu-ray), not necessarily because they were demanded.

I'm sure there are some big movie nerds out there that love the extra stuff, but generally I think it's a waste and just an excuse to pump a few extra dollars out of the consumer.

It's more than that, the picture quality would take a hit. Then the videophiles would be up in arms. Why not just adjust the format on your TV?

Re: F...Blu Ray

Out of the hundreds of dvds/blu rays I own I would say less than 2% of them have bonus features that were deciding factors in my purchase and those were normally special sneak peaks at future projects, short films related to the movie, or real deleted scenes/alternate endings. I do love how many blu-rays are now coming with a free digital copy for me to use with my ipod/iphone.

it's pretty money, but what i would love is if they can find a way to put a standard dvd format on the disc w the blu ray, that would be nice. i have the ps3 in the living room on the massive plasma but i just have a nubbs dvd player in the bedroom. since we rarely watch movies in there it's not a big deal, it would just be nice to have it interchangeable w/o having to buy two seperate dvds

I doubt you would prefer 4:3 over 16:9. What is important to me and many others is that we watch the movie as it was shot. Feel free to stretch the picture on your TV to get rid of the black bars.

These extras are called "value added" and their intent is not so they can charge the consumers more but differentiated their product from competitors and move more units. Blu-Rays don't cost more because they have extras, they cost more because they know people will pay what they charge.

I mean, you have movies like Avatar being reintroduced into the market with a directors cut edition. When Avatar first came out I bought it for $24.99 and the new directors cut version costs $24.99.

Personally I do enjoy the extras...they have good stuff in there and you're no worse off watching that than watching SportsCenter.

I am tempted to buy the new collectors edition Avatar just for the commentary. I feel to hear what the director was thinking or trying to portray in a certain scene.

More and more companies are doing this, especially Disney, but I think now with companies delving more into their catalog of titles for conversion, you will see more blu-ray/dvd combos.

Man that picture sums it up amazingly well for me. For me the time between when I put the dvd in and wait for the menu to show up is the time to go handle business, aka get food ready, get everything nice and comfy, and make sure I'm good to go. That way I can skip past the annoying trailers/whatever and by the time I'm ready to go, the dvd is at the menu. Then just skip past everything until the start of the movie and problem solved.

Same thing with TV shows. All these studio execs wondering why people pirate TV shows. When you charge upwards of $40 and $50 for a single season the reasons pretty much write themselves and this is coming from someone who owns every season of Friends along with all but one season of Everybody Loves Raymond.

They keep on giving people excuses to not buy legitimate copies and then wonder why the bottom line isn't producing the numbers they want. For God's sakes man, previews are cool in the actual theater because not only do they act as a buffer that allows you to get to the movie a little late but you get to see previews of movies you've never heard of before. Previews at home on the other hand usually include movies that are about to come to DVD.

this might be an fu bluray thread, but i didnt want to start a whole new thread. For anyone interested in buying a bluray player,I suggest a samsung bd-c6500 I just got at bestbuy on sale for 139.99.Ive been researching them a little,Ive bought 3 this week and tried them out and this one is by far the best, especially for the price.I havent even tried to play a bluray disc in it yet,so I cant attest to that, its the other features it has that are cool as shit. Its wifi, and it lets you stream any movie service, while others might only let you do vudu or blockbuster or whatever, this one does it all.It does pandora, facebook, and a few other things, plus you can buy apps from samsung to put on it like an iphone. But to me the coolest thing it does is it will let you stream movies from your home computer if you have some on it.You have to download a program from samsungs website that lets you do it,then your good to go.

Don't buy Samsung blu-ray players, they are a flimsy and unreliable. If you're getting a blu-ray I would suggest you either get yourself a PS3 or this bad-ass Panasonic player.

so does the PS3 do everything you "need" or want a blu-ray player to do? If you don't have a HD TV, is blu-ray worth anything?

PS3 does everything you need for blu-ray and then some. Without a doubt it is the best blu-ray player on the market. Of course if you just want a blu-ray player and have no use for it as a gaming device the price is a little too high.

My brother has the Panasonic, and yeah, it doesn't have the ability to stream content from your computer. It does netflix, pandora, twitter, etc.

If you are going to stick with the Samsung you should definitely get the warranty from BestBuy.

ok thanks, its too late for the best buy warranty,I'll check out Sqaure Trade warranties, theres are usually cheaper anyway.
But 2 different best buys I went to 2 different salesman said they had the samsung and loved it,so hopefully I'll have good luck with it.
