Ty Law wants out of New England

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1758628&partnersite=espn
The "bridge is burned." All-Pro cornerback Ty Law does not want to play another game for the Patriots.

Citing "irreconcilable differences," Law said he has told Patriots coach Bill Belichick and vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli his desire to play somewhere else after being "lied to" about their intentions, according to the Boston Globe.

"Right now, it's not about money," Law told the Globe this week. "That bridge is burned. I no longer want to be a Patriot. I can't even see myself putting on that uniform again, that's how bad I feel about playing here."

That is probably how Champ felt but he never said it publicly! One thing you don't do is short change your best employees. When people don't feel appreciated and are given the runaround about their status/future you are bound to have situations like this. I just wish we hadn't spend that money on Springs.

I say more power to you Ty!

If the guy is under contract he should shut his mouth and honor it, I would like to know how much money law would give back if he was getting burned all year? As for champ he was offered 2 very lucrative contract's we didn't short change him, he wanted to go so good luck and don't let the door hit ya in the A** champ.

Screw that...even if you are under contract teams can release you at any given time. Honor nothing...get yours I say. It is all about being happy and he is clearly not happy.

I suppose marriage is kind of a contract but if you get to a certain point in a relationship where you both can't stand eachoter you think it is wise to stay together to honor that contract? I'm not advocating divorce here but people should have the option of getting divorced.

EEich 03-13-2004 07:22 PM

I agree... teams are screwing players all the time by telling them to renegotiate or they're gone. Players should have the same right... "renegotiate or I'll sit"... but then again they have to put up or shut up.

Like Boomer says... the NFL is the league where they play... for pay.

JWsleep 03-13-2004 07:29 PM

This is a continuation of the old-time struggle between players and owners. In the bad old days in baseball, the owners had all the power. Now the pendulum has swung back towards the players. It's a big, big business, and there is no loyalty. Money talks, or the players walk. Why should Ty Law be loyal to Bob Kraft?

(I'm NOT saying I like this, but I'm not sure of a better way to do it than the free market. Owner monopoly wasn't great either, and wasn't legal, apparently.)

manicd 03-13-2004 08:53 PM

Oh, this is the best part though.

"It's not a reason to hold out. I get $1 million just to show up. Who wouldn't show up for $1 million? The money ain't the thing, because I have that. Then again, I'm not going to sit here and say I don't want $7 million, either. That's stupid. Hell, we all gotta eat."

Yeah, I need 7 million to put food on the table.

sportscurmudgeon 03-13-2004 09:34 PM

There is really a fundamental difference between the Champ Bailey situation here in Washington and the Ty Law situation in Boston. Champ's contract was up; he had to get a new contract in order to be eligible to play for anyone in the league - including the Redskins even if they hung a franchise tag on him. Ty Law has a contract with two more years on it. While both players are excellent cornerbacks and both want to do some negoitating this off-season, the differences in the two situations are greater than the similarities.

However, there is a lesson here for fans to see. Ty Law signed a classic NFL contract with layered signing/roster bonuses and a large backloading so that the first few years were "cap friendly". His is not the only contract like that; virtually every huge contract for a top flight player in the NFL is the same kind of thing. And now, he is in a situation where he stands to make a lot of money on his contract (but it will be a cap burden for the team) or to make a lot of money renogiating his contract with his team to make it more cap friendly or to make a lot of money negotiating a new deal with some other team.

We'll see how this one plays out in New England. But, do not be surprised when this happens to some of the Redskins' players such as:

Chris Samuels
LaVar Arrington
Clinton Portis
Fred Smoot (after he signs his second contract here)
Lavernaeus Coles
John Jansen (maybe?)

Ghost 03-13-2004 10:02 PM

It's happening right now with Samuels ... he's eating up something like 10% of the team's cap space, so far refusing to renegotiate. LaVar's bump is a number of years down the road, same with Portis. We'll renegoiate some of these contracts and pay out the difference in signing bonuses, while letting other players go (like Steven Davis), making trades if possible -- like Champ, who''ll use up so much of Denver's cap space that they convinced the Skins to throw in a second rounder ... I believe the deal we gave Portis is a lot more cap-friendly. That's life in the NFL these days. I hope Gibbs is getting acclimated.

I doubt anyone forced him to sign that contract last year. If he doesn't like it now why'd he sign it then. You put your name on the dotted line you live up to it!!!

Daseal 03-14-2004 07:38 PM

He already said he's not going to hold out, and I think he has more agaisnt the orginization than just the money. There's not a damn thing wrong with saying you want out. If he's unhappy, why should he just keep it inside. Tell NE he's unhappy and maybe they'll trade him while they still can.

Ghost 03-14-2004 07:59 PM

Seriously. This is a business and these guys should honor their contracts and quit whining like a bunch of prima donnas. I can't muster much sympathy for these millionaires.

Daseal 03-14-2004 08:54 PM

Guys, he is honoring his contract. He offered to buy it out because he left, the only thing he isn't doing is taking a paycut, and who can blame him? He didn't say "I'm not showing up to training camp" he said he'd play, but he also said he was unhappy there. Why is this such a big deal, he's being an adult about it, and NE is much more likely to trade him if everyone knows he want's out.

You think contracts mean shit? He's not going to restructure, and you think contracts are always acted upon? Not in this league guys. Players are cut the second they make too much money, they have their contracts voided by the owners. The owners don't give the players any sort of special contract agreement, why should the players always live their contracts out?

Which is he doing, he just doesn't want to restructure for a lot less than what he's worth. I'd take his same posiiton right now unless I really had close ties in that orginization. He single-handedly beat the colts. He beat up Harrison and stole the ball a bunch, and he gets rewarded by a paycut.

johnnyredskin63 03-15-2004 04:44 AM

when you sign your contract you are giving your word legally you will honor it.if you are any type of man you honor that respectfully.i'm sorry your word is your bond i do not care if you are wealthy or homeless.if he had any sense at all or any honor,he would protest in a respectful way not like a spoiled child.

If you look at it that way, the owner or someone from the team also agreed to it and signed it, so they should also honor it and not ask him to restucture.

cpayne5 03-15-2004 01:16 PM

If Ty Law has been treated poorly by NE, I don't see any problem with him sitting out. If he is greedy and is only after more money, then I have no patience for that. As for you guys who are saying that its ok for a player to sit out because the teams can cut you at anytime, you should read a contract. I'm sure that there are stipulations in it that explicitly say when and why a player can be cut. There are NO stipulations in it that say a player can sit (without forfeiting a pay check).
If you look at it that way, the owner or someone from the team also agreed to it and signed it, so they should also honor it and not ask him to restucture.
that's true, but i am sure they told him they may have to do that on down the road.i agree that both sides should agree to carry out the complete terms of the contract, regardless.lets face it,if the owners could not get the players to restructure their deals, the league would be extremely boring.

The contract is not guarenteed by the team that is part of the deal, and because of this player's may recieve a bigger contract with the team knowing they can opt out, but the player does not have that option he is bound by that contract, as well as when they sign the contract they do so knowing that those are the tearm's if he didn't like it he didn't have to sign it at the time, but he did like it, and as it turned out thing's went pretty well for him on the field and now he want's more, but if thing's didn't go so well he wouldn't be parading for a pay cut now would he.

They should play thier contract's out because of a speacilty in the contract, it's called a signing bonus, they seem to forget all about the upfront money and only look at what's left on thier contract, and that is a big part of the contract, the player get's a guarenteed bonus up front and the team get's a more managable cap friendly contract down the road, as far as his performance you don't think that the rest of the team has a hand in his success? learning form belichik as well as parcell's and playing in thier defensive schemes had a lot to do with his success, we saw first hand this year what bad coaching can do to a player's success, it can really keep a player down if the coach doesn't use him properly, law has also said he doesn't know how he could play again for the patriots. although he didn't say he wouldn't he is trying real hard to force his way into a new contract some how or some way.

johnnyredskin63 03-15-2004 05:36 PM

these guys are making millions playing the game you can't help but love.most of them say they would play for a pat on the fanny.how about a pat and the fanny and millions
of dollars?play the game already fellows.

Daseal 03-15-2004 05:44 PM

First of all, what's all the talk about him sitting out. He said he want's out of the orginization, but he clearly states he WILL PLAY OUT THE REST OF HIS CONTRACT. The signing bonus point is good, but in the long run would save NE money to cut him, and he even offered to buy it out. Which to me says how much he really no longer wants to be in NE.

I don't think a player of Law's stature should have to take a paycut after he had an incrediable season and took them to a Super Bowl. He's not happy within the orginization and ASKED to be let out. Is he demanding anything? Is he going to sit out? As far as I'm concerned with all the trades/cuts going on, why not ask. You might just get your wish. Sure he can stay on the Pats pay roll for two years making a shitload of money and not restructure or want to be there. Or they could trade him for another player and picks (I hear Seattle is willing to let Alexander go for a CB) and I bet you they use 1 of the 1st rounders on a CB.

Daseal 03-15-2004 05:49 PM

Stop with the greed. It's an insult.

I'm paying you 30,000 dollars a year, and it's time for your yearly review. You've been an excellent part of my company and you've really helped us do a lot here! I'm prepared to offer you 18,000 dollars a year now. You've done so well you've earned a paycut. Congratulations.

Listen, none of us would EVER take that in our real lives, why should these guys? Granted the numbers are quite a bit higher, but if you were in his position you'd do the same damn thing. You want to give me a fraction of my previous salary, even though I had a pro-bowl callibre year?

Don't even lie and say that wouldn't piss you off, especially if you weren't exactly happy with the company. You'd go shopping.

Contracts in the NFL are meant to be broke. Mainly by owners, but I see absolutly no problem in a player asking to be released. If I were an owner I'd like to know who doesn't want to be there. I'd try to work it out with the player, but if I couldn't I'd probably release them. Simply because you want people who want to be there. Anyhow, I think Ty Law wants to make money (who can blame them, I don't see anyone crucifying LaVar after his outrageous contract, he's just trying to get his, right?)

johnnyredskin63 03-15-2004 05:56 PM

if i was making twenty million and my employer asked me to take a paycut to ten million,i'd damn sure take it.how many houses,cars,boats,exwives,5 legged donkeys
does one person need?come on,the guy makes boatloads playing a kids game for christ sake.be happy and have fun while you can.life is just too short not to brudder.

Daseal 03-15-2004 05:58 PM

I wasen't aware that new england want's him to take a pay cut, I thougt he just wanted to renegotiate, If they are asking him to take a pay cut then I would have to say coming off a SB win that's not right, but if he just stick's to his gun's he will get his wish and be released or traded or they will pay him the remainder of his contract.

SmootSmack 03-16-2004 01:18 AM

The argument players often make when it comes to their contracts, be it taking a pay cut, settling for less money, or simply restructuring, is that they're negotiating not only for themselves but also for future players. If, for example, Ty Law (arguably a top 5 cornerback) agrees to settle for less money what does it do for his fellow union members? Especially cornerbacks who hope to negotiate new contracts soon. Someone like Fred Smoot for example.

How sincere this argument is I don't know, but I know that it's often brought up

Daseal 03-16-2004 07:27 AM

Offiss, read the article. It will help you understand Ty Law a lot better. I don't think he's being an ass at all. It's not a tiny pay cut they want him to take either. I think they said 18 million, which is way less than his current contract. I think he'll make over 18 mil these last two years! Well, not quite, but still.

Johnny, I understand that money isn't the end all be all of existance, but everyone here admits it's quite a luxury to have. These guys are bartering for their families future with money, sure they have money, but if they get more there's a better chance to invest it correctly. These guys work all year basicly straight through. Sure, they get vacations now and then, and they love what they do, but that doesn't make it any less grueling! Not to mention, it only takes 1 play for you to never see the field again. You better get the money when you have a chance.

Hell, look at our own Dexter Manly. A college degree for football players means nothing. He went through (or at least part) of college and couldn't even read. They learn football, nothing else.

Like the man said...he has to eat. Believe me the more money you have, the more money you don't have. You'll first buy a big house, and then a big boat...family is asking for money from left to right because you are loaded so you give them some. Nice Jag, let me buy it. Wow, this diamond is phat...let me cop that. 10 million might seem like a lot, but once you have that kind of money your living standards go up....way up. All of a sudden 10 million seems like nothing. 10 million is nothing man ...it is chump change. You can't even open up a nice movie theater or a motel with that kind of money nowadays. Sure you could put that money and invest it but come on, if you have never had that kind of money before you are bound to spend it.

Yea from what I have come up with on a couple of show's is that the guy is a pretty decent guy and a real team player, and belichik I guess stuck his foot in his mouth man to man with law and now they are back tracking, apparently belichik didn't believe law was capable of playing corner as well as he did down the stretch, but they don't want to pay him as such, from what I have heard he also went to management 2 year's ago offering to restructure to make sure the team was able to keep brady, he sound's like a real stand up guy and a winner, I stand corrected on this one I didn't know new england was asking him to take a pay cut, as well as some of the other particular's, my bad! I hope he win's out now!

Daseal 03-18-2004 07:29 AM

Ug, after reading my quote I need to read my posts before I post them. There are so many grammar mistakes it's like I'm back in elementary school! Hurray for tense switching.

Anyhow, I really like Ty Law and wish him the best, but I think NE is trying to really work him over here. I hate NE and hope Ty gets out and they don't even make the playoffs, which I think with Ty they might not even make. They really aren't that talented and I'm not a fan of their formula. If they didn't have the coaching staff they have those bunch of no names would be at the bottom of their division.
