Board is screwy??
So is the board screwy for everyone? Actually I guess it's just the front page that is missing the usual "last post" link and such. Looks weird. Never realized how much I use stuff like that.
|
Re: Board is screwy??
I've got the same thing. It looks like some threads have the last post link but not all of them.
|
Re: Board is screwy??
Yeah to me it looks like they cut out the "last poster" line on each thread. Probably to streamline the look of the main page. That eliminates one line from each thread displayed. That's pretty significant.
It's consistent for me. Every single thread on the main page does not have the "last poster" username listed as a clickable link. |
Re: Board is screwy??
Just trying out a cleaner look
|
Re: Board is screwy??
It be nice to get the last poster back option becasue sometimes if I see SS or some one knowledgeable posting in a old thread I click it because I know there could be a chance of some good info.

BTW of all the boards I visit this is by fair the cleanest and easiest to read. Some VB boards I visit have like one thread that will have over a 1000 pages but 4 post per page that is so fawking annoying! |
Re: Board is screwy??
Though I realize it's not a democracy, if it were, I would vote for the last poster option. Same basic reasons as mredskins
|
Re: Board is screwy??
Here is one issue I have had with the "last poster" option. If a thread say like a gameday thread or the supper happy fun thread gets to large the "last poster" option no longer works if you click it it will just take you straight to the first page of the thread. It is weird.

yeah I've never been able to figure out why that happens |

It is because of deleted posts. Once there are enough deleted posts to to take you to the "last page" where that post exists the "last page" isn't actually there anymore because the deleted posts have shrunk the thread. It has to calculate that "last page" based on your display settings for # of replies per page so it is a dynamic thing that can't be helped. It likely only happens in bigger threads. |
Re: Board is screwy??
Oh and I would vote for the old interface. This was already a pretty clean looking site. There is such thing as "too streamlined".

Me to It's to...........clean. Can we dirty it up just a little? |

That may be true in the Supper Happy Fun thread but on a gameday thread it does it as well and there are rarely deletes there. Once a thread reaches about 70 pages it will happen. |
Re: Board is screwy??
Yeah deleted posts aren't the problem, we don't delete posts that often, just seems to happen once a thread reaches a certain # of pages.
|
Re: Board is screwy??
weird then...i can't conceive of why the number of posts would matter at all. irrelevant either way.
|
Re: Board is screwy??
So I am not seeing this change. Perhaps I am blind, but is change on the "Home" page? If so, was there a last poster column?
I don't know, because I never use the home page. I only use the "All Forums" page as my bookmarked warpath site. |

Re: Board is screwy??
Most enter by the home page
|
Re: Board is screwy??
Ah, so is the "last post" coming back?
|

once I'm done with my little study... perhaps

My vote is I hope it comes back,I liked it better like that |
Re: Board is screwy??
Personally I prefer the all forums page, since I check this site a lot. I can read the latest in each forum, and then I will click each forum if I want to see more.
To me the Home screen has always been too busy. |
Re: Board is screwy??
I hope the old page comes back as well.. This I feel doesn't give me enough information like, who started the post, the last poster, etc.
I also hate how when a thread gets a long.. after like 2 or 3 posts in, there's a banner ad now! Where they do that at? |
Re: Board is screwy??
The ads have always been there, gotta pay the bills
|
Re: Board is screwy??
Thanx for the changes MK

Yeah you can reset counters on threads to help with that.. but there are definitely still quirks regardless.. like it not saving last viewed post properly.. so oftentimes if you click that link it'll take you to the end of the thread rather than where you left off I can't remember if there's an option to save that in the db vs cookies or whatever |

I always figured it was spam deletions. Now I'm curious.. I haven't seen this happen on other boards where it wasn't deletions. |

I usually come in through the home page but that's because I can usually type faster than open bookmarks or whatever other method of entry to the site. My biggest beef with the home page is that the easiest way to access all forums is via a dropdown menu. To me that's inefficient, not to mention that web crawlers will not follow javascript (which is how the dropdowns are created/displayed). So it takes it following different links for the crawlers to get back to the actual home page and forum groupings to scour all content efficiently. To the average user that won't change much (unless you're like me and don't like dropdowns, or at least longer ones). But as far as search engine optimization, the higher up the page the better.. but if it's not able to be crawled, not so good. |

spammers don't get through often enough to have significant deletions from them |

By the way have the site configured from an end user perspective it doesn't seem as if there would be. The counters still make me curious though.. I'm not sure why they would register another page before there really was one. Without having ever really testing it I've noticed that the vbadvanced landing page will often display that there are say 3 pages of a topic yet when going to the actual forumdisplay that there are only 2 I don't think that vbadvanced changes the way that counters work though, something like that is probably outside of my scope.. but from dealing with multiple forums on vbulletin that characteristically have multiple page threads this seems to be the only one with the counter/page issue.. I wonder if it's a plugin that's run errant |

got any recommendations for something else to use? |
Re: Board is screwy??
I guess if you complain you should be able to present an alternative right? I'd personally probably just use a straight link to the forum home. I mean there may be some members who hop to one of the subforums first but idk.. maybe that'd be worth polling or looking at analytics for where people tend to end up within the forums coming straight from the home page, though I'm not sure if analytics shows a non-traditional link jump, that I'd have to look into.
I was going to say just put it in a vbadv module but that'd take up real estate from the headlines, polls, etc so that's probably not a good idea. |
Re: Board is screwy??
I know javascript isn't efficient but I went with functionality over SEO. Still, most of the drop-down options aren't that important and can be weeded out. Something to think about.

I'm also big on functionality and user friendliness over SEO, if SEO imparts itself no doubt I would think that the menus are used minimally and a better context menu could probably take the place of those boxes obviously not a huge concern as it won't change membership any |
Re: Board is screwy??
You're probably right, let me know what you think of the new menu
|
Re: Board is screwy??
I like it.
|
Re: Board is screwy??
I didn't wanna post a brand new thread so I'm bumping this.
I started a topic in debating with the enemy and for some reason none of the debating with the enemy threads show up in the Off Topic box on the main page. Like how when you create a new thread, it bumps up to the top of the off topic box? Yeah. Not happening. Didn't know what was up. |
Re: Board is screwy??
I removed that forum from showing up on the main page. Figured it was better than removing it altogether, which was something I was considering.

lol could you move my thread to the parking lot then? Cuz I'm interested in what everyone has to say, but I'm afraid no one will see it. :/ |
