Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
With Snyderatto not running things anymore, the Redskins are no longer a place to go to get paid, so the greedy moneygrubbers wont want to come here (which is good). But what about the hard working, blue-collar players we want the skins to go after - why would they choose to come here?
McNabb is one of the most beloved players in the league - and the Shanahans completely humiliated him. I dont think free agents will want to come here because they fear Shanahan could do the same to them. What do you guys think? |
Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
I think the McNabb thing is a bit overblown. People know that Shanahan has won a lot of games in this league doing things his way. If you perform you've got nothing to worry about. Can we sit here today and really say that DM was performing at a high level? Anyone?
|
Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
People do forget too that Andy Reid had decided he was better off without McNabb. That should have told people something, but it didn't.
But Props to Shanahan for doing things his way. Mcnabb wasn't working out, so Shanahan benched him. No other coach in DC would do something like that, we would just have to suffer through that players contract because they were the highest paid... |

Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
I expect the Skins are going to be pretty aggressive in free agency. They're set up well to do so, cap-wise.
|
Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
As fans, we side with Shanahan. but players view McNabb as incredibly awesome and amazing. Its their perception that really matters, not ours. Without exception, ever quote from a current or former player (now in the media) has taken mcnabbs side in the issue and feels the teams disrespected him.
Remember, we arent just talking about mcnabbs performance being poor.we're talking about the manner in which it went down and how that looks to other players. |

I am eager to see how aggressive they will be & what that means; will they be aggressive in going after a few guys? big-money guys? We'll learn a lot about Allen & Shan this offseason. I expect the team to sign a no. of mid range starters rather than a few big contracts. Maybe something comparable to Gibbs II 04 class. |
Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
Anyone got a list?
I would like for us to go after Steve Slaton if he's a FA. He has a perfect style of running for the zone blocking like the did in WVU. He could also help on ST if he doesn't become our feature back. |
Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
We really don't know who the unrestricted FA's are yet. Do we?

Here a pretty solid list resource |
Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
i wish they'd stay quiet for a year and just try and draft and get a bunch of un drafted free agents. let them play together for a while and then when this team might be ready for a playoff run, then add in the big money free agents. the front office has to realize that they're not one off season away from being a contender.

Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
There are only so many opportunities in the NFL. We'll have no problem luring FAs. Joseph, Woodley are two names I'm hearing a lot lately

I like both those names ALOT. Kalil the center in Carolina and Vincent Jackson are 2 names Id like to be hearing after those 2. |
Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
I bet some players appreciate the fact that Shanahan does not coddle players the likes of McNabb/Haynesworth. Shanahan could give 2 sh!ts what people think about him and is all about winning. That is the kind of coach you want to play for if championships are your end goal.

Well yeah, good teams usually sign their best players. Hopefully we do the same with Carlos. But they are still free agents, unsigned players |

Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
For NFL players who can actually play, Free Agency is dominated by the money on the table. They do not worry about getting playing time - - because they know they can play. They don't worry about anything except getting paid what they think they are worth.
What the Skins have to do is to put the brakes on their historical tendency to OVERPAY free agents. |

Well I hope in the future he gives more thought to giving up draft pick for a QB whose team is willing to trade him to a division rival. |

The redskins always get the guys they want, I'm done getting hyped up about FAs, the past has ruined it for me.. Yea I'd like to see some of those guys mentioned but until we actually win again it doesn't matter

Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
Of course we will pursue FA. The only reason we weren't aggressive in FA last season was because the crop was god-awful horrible. It's not like Shanahan didn't forfeit a draft pick once because he was in violation of the salary cap. ;)
Kyle is never going to adjust to the players we have, so we'll accommodate HIM and grab the best Andre Johnson clone on the market, be it VJax, Sid Rice, etc. |

Of course not, but with Mount Cody now being the NT, they MAY entertain trading him. |

So I'm not worried about what other players think as long as they know they are no longer getting a contract with the Skins to retire. Let them contact current players and ask all the questions they want. Also remember Tom Coughlin was called a hard nosed difficult HC also his first yr and if I remember correctly there was talk of him being fired either during his first yr or after. Look at him now. Perhaps he lightened up a little and the Shanahan's can also but I'm glad there is some hard nose coaching going on for a change. Hopefully there is no more expecting a roster spot and playing time because of all the money they make. |

Re: Huge FA Class in 2011 - But will anyone want to come here?
The whole notion of 'players won't want to come here' is as dumb as Shanahan 'lost the locker room' in the midst of the McNabb situation. Players don't care about that bs when money is on the table. Most free agents will go for A) Money, B) System fit, C) environment.. We've shown we're not scared to spread money around, Shanahan/Allen will get players that fit and bottom line, Shanny's rep for winning and having a good program will offset any concerns of McNabb/Haynesworth.
As for a free agent wish list (trying to be realistic as well): RB-Tim Hightower WR-Malcolm Floyd or Jacoby Jones OL-Deuce Luitui, Davin Jospeh or Ryan Khalil DL-Aubrayo Franklin or Barry Coefeld LB-David Harris or Manny Lawson |

Ngata plays DE, Cody is slated to replace Kelly Gregg at NT. I am hoping that Anthony Bryant works out at NT (he looked good yesterday). |

Exactly, hopefully we spread money around and bring in some young talent to build some depth all over the team. Usually we throw a few huge contracts at players that we shouldn't be giving that kind of money to (Jason Taylor, AH etc.) |

Ngata and Redding are the DEs, and Gregg is the NT. Ngata's athleticism is better suited to the 3-4 end position, instead of being a space-eating NT (which is what Gregg's role is on that D). |

Well I'm sure at this point and time most players will have each others backs considering the CBA and all but I was refering to players having the Shanahan's back in this case. Apparently they like what the coach's are doing and how they are handling things. |
