Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
I had this idea last night, and it got me thinking?
What if the NFL built a stadium somewhere in the US, preferably in a state/city that didnt have an existing team/venue, that would serve exclusively for hosting the Superbowl each year? It could obviously hold other functions throughout the year to generate money, like boxing/WWE/MMA... It could have a retractable roof, so that if the weather was nice on Superbowl day, the roof could be open. Would this work?? I think it could really be a good addition to the league, and it could have the prestige of being "Superbowl Stadium".... |
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
Having the SB in different locations helps pump revenue into different cities. No way the league would agree to having it at one site.

How would it be paid for? Our favorite post writer, Sally Jenkins (:) ), has a critical article today about the NFL and mentions the financing of stadiums. It's worth reading that article & thinking about your idea. Still, in theory, good idea. |
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
They had the Super Bowl in a Non-NFL city when they use to have it at the Rose Bowl. No NFL team plays there and it is a huge stadium. But they haven't been back their in a long time. I only think of it, becuase the Skins won there with Riggins, Theisman and company back in the 82 season. But I agree with Matty, it generates revenue for different cities and that's kind of a big deal.

Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
I say build one in Mexico City, the Drug Cartel would make millions :)

Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
I sort of like the idea Bill Simmons brings up in his response to the second email of this mailbag column.
Basically he thinks the Super Bowl should rotate between only a few cities that fit his criteria for the perfect location:
That leaves Miami, San Diego, New Orleans (even if New Orleans can get chilly, Bourbon Street makes up for it), Las Vegas (if it ever builds a stadium) and Los Angeles (hopefully breaking ground on Farmers Field soon) as our We Should Be The Super Bowl Rotation quintet in an ideal world.
|
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
Then again, there is a very slim chance that I will ever actually attend a Super Bowl, so I don't really care where they play it as long as the Skins make a few more over the years.
|
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
I say rotate between the 32 NFL team stadiums, alternate AFC/NFC each year. A Superbowl in Buffalo or New England might have to be scheduled in June though :)
|
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
Sad thing is if a city paid enough for exclusive rights the NFL would consider it, just like they do with TV packages and video games. Only problem is they would have to pay $1 or $2 billion for that exclusive right.
|
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
Why? The NFL has 32 stadiums and there are how many more big enough for the SB. Do we really need to build one more? Talking about waisting money like the government.

Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
I'm not sure a stadium could pay off its construction and operating costs by hosting only one NFL game a year.
|
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
Kansas needs it....right in the center of everybody. :)
|
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
Yea i think it is totally impossible............
|
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
All I know is there sure were a buch of suckers this year who paid $200-$300 to go to the game and sit OUTSIDE in the cold and watch it on a big screen TV under heat lamps. That is dumb to me. I know I could host a pretty nice party at my house for $200 and have my friends come watch the game at my own house INSIDE. How did Jerry Jones sucker those guys into that? They were in the parking lot!

Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
It wouldn't work. But it would be nice to have it on a rotation, kind of like golf does with some of the majors. Putting a SB in cities like Jacksonville, Minneapolis or Indy doesn't make any sense. San Diego, Miami, LA and New Orleans should be where they should put it. Even Las Vegas if they had a big enough stadium.

I imagined that it could hold events through the year like Pro Wrestling, MMA, concerts and stuff...maybe have the odd regular season game there, but i figured the superbowl would be money... |

Good point. |
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
yes,bad idea.I would like to have the SB here some day,but it will never happen.
|
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
So what would be the benefits of having it at the same site every year?
|
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
Well, it would certainly be more efficient for the NFL to not have to use the resources dealing with all the bids, the criteria for hosting and dealing with various entities on why or why not certain cities are eligible. They would also not have to listen to all the butthurt stadium owners and mayors of towns that can't have a super bowl.
I'd say that is not enough beef to warrant a "this city only" stadium but it sure would cut down on the drama. If anything they should work on making sure all the teams endeavor to build domed stadiums. Then everyone is eligible and they could just go down the list and let everyone have a Super Bowl. |

Interesting concept but not sure it will happen for quite awhile.

Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
The cold weather and snow in Dallas was insane but isn't football meant to be played in the cold and in the elements?

I see no problems there. :D
don't forget the huge traffic bottleneck and lack of parking around the stadium! |
Re: Would an exclusive Superbowl Stadium work??
This is a brilliant idea....why not build the stadium in Alaska? They don't have a home football team and people can go explore the majestic beauty of Alaska on tours provided by the NFL.
Genius! |
