Name change
I saw that the Washington Post was asking a readers poll this question, so I thought I might ask the same question here...
IS IT TIME TO CHANGE THE NAME? I am in favor of changing the name. For racist reasons above all and secondly Dan Snyder's 'Redskins' don't deserve to be named after native americans or prestigious franchises of the past... Let's change the name or sell or move the team. Bring back the name DIPS! That is what we are... Deion, Spurrier, Haynesworth, McNabb... |
Re: Name change
I'm against it simply because a new name doesn't promote winning ways. Besides it's likely that the new name would not be original or cool. Bullets/Wizards?
|
Re: Name change
I dont care either way about the name but its only a matter of time before the name is changed.

I'm not even interested in the poll results. |
Re: Name change
Keep the name!!!!!
|
Re: Name change
I hate the times between the Super Bowl and the beginning of FA and after the draft until training camp.....
|
Re: Name change
The name is never gonna change. Kind of a waste of conversation really.
|
Re: Name change
The logo on the helmet will change before the name ever does. I'm not sure either will any time soon.
|
Re: Name change
There will continue to be sympathizers but, it's not likely to happen anytime soon.

The name and logo hasn't changed yet, so why would it now?? I'm all for adjusting the logo but don't mess with the name. |
Re: Name change
The name isn't changing and neither are the uniforms. Next topic.
|
Re: Name change
.............no................
|
Re: Name change
I'd change it back to the Braves
|
Re: Name change
absolutely not, ever.
don't care about racism, offending anyone, nothing. i mean i do generally as a human being, but this is my FOOTBALL TEAM we are talking about here. c'mon son! on a related note, i pray leonsis brings back the bullets. at least the old color scheme. "wizards" was always corny (although sadly the best name in the contest) IMO, and most of their gear is hideous...unwearable except to a game. |

It's been a long offseason already hasn't it? At least we have the combine coming up. |
Re: Name change
Im against any name change, I also love our Uniforms and the Logo and see no need to change any of it.

At least we have the combine coming up.
But seriously how many times do we have to talk about the name change... Thank god for the combine. Can you imagine if we have a lock out? By next October we will be arguing about whether Miller Lite is less filling or taste great. |

I think the Washington Divas should have to change their name because it's offensive to opera singers.

Re: Name change
I think the harder the moral minority tries to change the teams name the more Snyder will fight against it. The only way it changes is if a judge tells Snyder it has to be changed. "If" that happens I would hope they simply change everything, meaning the team colors also. It just wouldn't be right to have to change the logo and name and keep the colors.
and if they ever are forced to make changes then I can only hope they pick up the colors Red, White, and Blue to follow suite with all the other teams in DC.... Caps and Nats. Rumor is the Wizards are supposed to be going back to original colors also. |
Re: Name change
My concern with anyone wanting a change is "if" a change is ever made it would be my luck I'd hate the change and then we are stuck with it. So for all you talking about wanting change be prepared for a situation where you might be unhappy with whatever changes are made.
Personally I have rode the fence on the uni change, for this reason exactly. I'm happy with what we are wearing now, but a side of me would like to see an update. I imagine if the owner would spend less time throwing away draft picks and spend more time touching up the uni's he would make more money off the fans who just have to have the latest and greatest. I think a lot of people are becoming hesitant when it comes to buying players jerseys because they come and go so fast here. |
Re: Name change
Never! A name change would be the single worst thing I could imagine happening to me in terms of my sports teams. I would not sign off on a name change even if you told me we would win the next 10 Super Bowls! I would rather lose as the Redskins then win under any other name! Next topic...

Re: Name change
The name links us to our heritage. Changing the name would be a major loss for the team and Snyder would lose $millions in having to change marketing/signs/etc.
Maybe it was wrong from the start to inherit the Braves than change it to Redskins, (what the redskins have to do with DC is beyond me) but its fiction. I always loved The Senators but thankfully we didnt switch to the Nationals- (that name is pretty 'tarded) |

I would hate for the name to change.
However the bleeding heart liberal treehuggers run rampant in this country and I almost expect a name change within my lifetime. |

Charley Brotman took to calling them the Senators because he couldnt come up with a good logo for Nationals and then everyone started calling them the Senators. Nationals wasnt some name they pulled out of thin air. |

In my mind if they change the name the team I grew up loving would be dead. I am not from the Washington DC area so i would have no natural reason to cheer for a team from Washington DC that was not the Redskins. The Redskins are my team. |

Love this quote!!! |
Re: Name change
I honestly cant see it happening unless the Redskins become a consistently winning team. I mean if there was ever a reason for a fan to defect it would be because the name was changed. There will be a lot of PR stuff out of Redskins park saying that’s its still the same organization with the same legends and traditions, but at the end of the day I think a lot of people will view it as its no longer the same team. It will give people a easy reason to switch teams if they are tired of mediocre play. And some people may also say I don’t want to route for a team that switched names; ie my team is the Redskins and they no longer exist.
Now if the Redskins are playing great and have been for some time the organization could probably get away with changing names and not losing a lot of fans. But that makes for a little bit of a catch 22. 90% of Native Americans embrace the name Redskins; it more plays into the warrior heritage to them and puts them in a favorable light. Im sure Native Americans would be more okay with it as long as the team is considered a joke and continues with years of poor – mediocre play. But do it while theyre winning it kind of disrespects Native Americans. 'Redskins' mascot acceptable, poll says - NFC East- NBC Sports |

But its still the same team, just a different name. It amazes me that anyone cares what they are called. I am a fan of the team no matter what silly nickname they use. |
Re: Name change
Also thinking about what i just said. If the team were to move to LA (or another city) would you still be a Redskins fan? Its the same team just a different location.

Yes but I do think changing cities is a lot different than changing nicknames. I think the answer would depend on if one lives in DC or not. I suspect the DC person would dump them while someone in TN doesnt care quite as much where they are playing as long as the uniform and name are the same. |

Its not a nickname its the actual name. Its different then a high school or college mascot. The team is firmly grounded in the name / is the name. |
