F' foot surgery
Had foot surgery to repair a torn ligament and dislocation in my foot last Friday (it's called a lis franc dislocation).
Two screws and a cadaver ligament later - I've got a cast the size and weight of a cinderblock on my foot and it is staying there until next Wednesday. After that, I get a walking cast that I am not allowed to walk on for another 5 weeks. PLUS, since it's my right foot and I can't put weight on it, I can't drive until sometime in mid-April. Blechhhhh. Even after that, I have to wear the walking boot for another 5-6 weeks. Double blechh. And finally, because misreading the medications (don't ask), I was without pain meds until Monday afternoon - I had the "make you drowsy" drugs, but not the "stop the pain meds". Made for an exciting weekend. |
Re: F' foot surgery
Wow dude that sucks, feel well soon!
I have never had major surgery, knock on wood. |
Re: F' foot surgery
Yeah, foot surgeries blow.
Had both of my feet completely reconstructed when I was 17. Cut and repaired all metatarsals (growth problem from youth, said I'd get stress fractures later in life if not corrected). Took 8 screws and 7 pins total. Getting the pins pulled from the bones by pliers was the worst part. I was literally (really) passing out as he was doing that. The nurses were putting cold water on my head and fanning me. :D I didn't walk for 4 months after the first one. Learned to walk and immediately had to get the other foot done, then had to learn how to walk again. So, about a year without walking really. 2 months of keeping it elevated in bed, then crutches and walking boots. They couldn't do both at once because it would require me being in a wheel chair and then when learning to put weight on the foot again, I wouldn't have a strong foot to lean on. Was not fun but taught me some life lessons. Then I had two more foot surgeries a few years back to remove shards of glass in my foot. Hope your recovery goes smoothly. Be careful with the pain killers. Serious. (lesson learned) Listen to the doctor. You don't want to put pressure on the bone where the screw is before it's fully healed and strong enough. Also, be careful with crutches and the boot on stairs. Don't fall down like I did! :bump: You should change your screen name to "Deadfoot". |

It freaked me out because my wife and I had alredy paid for our vacation/trip for the summer and I was paranoid i physically wouldn't be ready to go by that time. I was lucky and did not have to have surgery, but i was in the walking boot thing for 6 weeks. Wasn't able to start training again until 4 weeks after that...totally sucked. And yeah i was not SUPPOSED to drive, but i did, and my pickup had a 5 speed too. So good luck. |
Re: F' foot surgery
My boss had a foot surgery about 2 or 3 months ago. He tried to return to work to fast and got a infection. He still has a boot on his foot and limps. So be carefull and make sure you keep your foot elevated.

Re: F' foot surgery
Ouch, rest up JR. At least you should be good to go by summer time.

Definitely. I noticed that when you don't have it up, it will throb and pound like someone is beating it with a hammer...so you'll want to keep it up. This is a great opportunity to teach some lucky woman in your life how to be a maid/waitress/nurse/slave (even if it's your mother). |

I think you need to visit firstdown's downstairs doctor if you're experiencing that, Matty.
Geesh, here goes another thread down THAT road...that's life at The Warpath. |

Re: F' foot surgery
lol thats funny.
If you cant drive due to a medical injury, try getting a metro access card, never used it myself but people/cleints who have similar injuries to yours use it. |

Thanks all. I hear ya' Matty. Spring will be a pain, but hopefully, all foot issues will be cleared up in time for the pool! |
Re: F' foot surgery
Just drive with your other foot, unless it's a stick.
When I had my right foot done, I luckily had a bench seat in that car. I sat literally in the middle of the car and used my left foot for the brake and accelerator. Had my crutches leaning where the passenger goes and had my right leg propped up on the seat. Was extremely weird at first but I got good at it quick. The doctor would've flipped out though. Also, when I had surgery on my right arm, I had a stick shift and would let go of the wheel and reach over to shift with my LEFT hand! :D Good times. How did you hurt your foot?

Re: F' foot surgery
For those of you with a mind to, Keep JR in your thoughts. He was laid up due to the foot surgery, and this weekend got to moving around. Well he ended up in the hospital last night with 2 severe clots in his lungs, and more going on than just those. He's a good man, and has many dependent on him, so I know right now he is very stressed (not the best to be in with that condition.) He'll be in the hospital for a few days, and on meds for a lot longer. Don't know that he will see the Warpath any time soon, but again, for those that "know" him, keep him close.
Thanks |
Re: F' foot surgery
Sorry to hear about his health issues and please keep us up dated on how he is doing.

Re: F' foot surgery
Yes, he is. The doctors said that Sunday night there was nearly no blood actually flowing through his lungs and it was very touch and go. Very scary. But he is responding well to the drugs, and was basically out of the woods as of yesterday. Thanks for your comments, guys, I relayed them to him.

Re: F' foot surgery
Oh and Jamf, his boot is definitely bedazzled by his 4 yo daughter.

Re: F' foot surgery
Oh man prayers out to JR, get better fast man!

Good to hear he's responding well. Do they know how this happened? Was this a reaction to the surgery? |
Re: F' foot surgery
The doctors are fairly confident that a clot formed in his calf due to the surgery, and that a part of it broke off and traveled to his lungs.
I will say it is really a scary thing that he and I were driving and talking, and I had no clue how close to the edge he really was(in fact according to the doctors he was well past it). He was clearly struggling, but nothing that I would have thought could have ended his life. Yet, in fact, it could have. You couple that with Japan's tragedy of instantaneous destruction and, man, this weekend really hammered home the thought that the future is not guaranteed, and that every minute means something. |
Re: F' foot surgery
Holy cow...you'd never expect something like that from a foot surgery, but they're not lying when they make you basically sign your life away before any procedure.
Hope he's continuing to improve. Foot surgery is miserable enough without complications. |
Re: F' foot surgery
How's JR doing?
|
Re: F' foot surgery
He's still in the hospital, trying to balance the levels of the anti-blood clotting meds. I just looked up the meds (coumadin) and that stuff is seriously no joking around medicine. He had also developed a bit of bronchitis. He is going a bit stir crazy though.
His wife and kids also are doing well, she's stressed obviously, but so far they seem to be managing. |
Re: F' foot surgery
Oh man that is tough :(
I had another friend go through a similar situation after surgery. It's very scary but fortunately the doctors are on top of it now. |

Re: F' foot surgery
I think they've done x-rays, and they had a few cat scans of his lungs. Overall the docs are on top of it, like jamf said.
