Clinton Portis appreciation thread

I realize that there's already a thread on his being released, and that many have weighed in with comments expressing appreciation for his contributions over the last seven years, but in my humble opinion, this is worthy of a separate thread. Although limited my injuries the last few seasons, when healthy he was very effective and played with a lot of heart.

Moments that stand out to me are his first run from scrimage v. the Bucs (64-yard TD run -- I was fortunate enough to be at that game, and people went crazy), countless blocks on blitzing LBs which he did without fear (I think he knocked a blitzing Sheldon Quarles unconscious at one point), and his incredible performance in the last 5 games in 2005 to get us to the playoffs. I wish the man well.

The guy will be missed for several reasons on the field plus his Goofy ass dress up off the field LOL.. He was a true gamer and workhorse. I will always cheer for CP

Re: Clinton Portis appreciation thread

Thanks, i didnt want to get all sentimental in the release thread about how im gonna miss him and all.....

I always hatted it when he dressed up. I thought he opened his mouth a little too much. He hated preseaons, was allowed to come out to rest during Gibbs 2.0, and i think partly fake his concusion. But i loved his play on the field. The guy was tough as hell and played hard every play. Never took plays off.

Most of us will miss you CP! I hope you find a team that can win!

When he and Gibbs called every person in the organization when ST died to tell them the news and offer support. The way he took charge during that time

For years CP gave us a running game which other teams had to respect and plan for. This was true even in times when the OL underperformed. The guy brought it every play, every game. I am proud that he was a Redskin and he will be missed.

Re: Clinton Portis appreciation thread

I'm kind of mixed on it myself. It was time for a change, that much is easy to admit. Seeing his work ethic last year with Shanahan changed my mind on him a little bit. But the 2 years with Zorn, he was really a PITA, made worse by the fact he wasnt delivering on the field.

He was a classy guy with handling the ST tragedy. And he loved Coach Gibbs. But i respect his honesty when he said yesterday that after Gibbs retired, he didnt have the same passion for the game anymore. I wish him well in life, and what football may have left to offer him.

He was always honest and spoke the truth. Thats very stand up of him. Best wishes, CP, and thanks for the good memories.

Man -- I hadn't recalled how gaping the hole was he ran through. 64 yards and no one got within about 5 yards of him the entire time. I haven't seen our O-line block like that in a long time (perhaps since that very play).

Career long 78 yards. Amazing how so many people on here bashed him for a 78-yard run.

It's amazing to see the burst of speed Portis had on his 64-yarder. His legs look so fresh. It's amazing what a couple 300+ carry seasons can do to a player.

He still had it in the end. When he couldn't go around someone, he went through them.

Shame that injuries ranked up so quickly and frequently.

Now that it's all said and done, I'm kinda bummed #26 is gone. Definitely one of my favorite Redskins of the last 10 years, and probably of all time.

Re: Clinton Portis appreciation thread

Yeah, he's a player people loved to hate and rip while he was here, but we'll all miss him. After we lost Taylor, he really stepped up as a leader on and off the field. He's had his good and bad moments, but in the end, he's one of the greatest Redskins players of all time.

Definitely my favorite along with Darrell Green. I may not even retire his jersey. I won't be ashamed wearing it after he's gone.

Definitely one of my favorites as well! I kept hoping there was a slight chance that he'd come back and be a one two punch with Torrain, but I suppose it's not meant to be. Thank you Clinton Portis!

I'm included in a long list that share both your views and memories. Number twenty-six has been like a fixture that is now broken. Sort of hate to see the man go. Good luck!!

Best way to start his tenure here with the TD. Will be missed CP.

He even wrapped up his career admirably. He was running hard in that last game against the Titans.

Sad to see him go. I know people were annoyed by his characters like south east jerome and sheriff gonna getcha but I always thought he was just trying to lighten the mood a little! He'll be missed!

I gotta admit, I'm going to miss CP. No one played harder or tougher on game day. Hope he catches on with New Orleans (or a winning team) and gets a chance to win a ring.

You're right on both points. :D

I just wish that video wasn't in slo-mo. His blocks were awesome at real speed.

Re: Clinton Portis appreciation thread

I have some great memories of him, the best was the game winning td run around left end v. Philly on 1/1/06 that brought us to 10-6 & in the playoffs. That came after S. Taylor picked up a fumble if I remember correctly.

The saddest part of his leaving to me was not the record (Riggo was my fave in the 80s so I can't route against him keeping the record), but the renewed commitment when Shanahan came in. CP was a pain in the ass for Zorn but then cleaned his act up this past year, but we'll likely never see what SE Jerome et al will play like in their twilight in DC.

With out question Portis has been my favorite player for many years. I have been hoping to see him return to his Pro Bowl form but i guess it just wasn't meant to be. I am very sad to see him go but wish him all the best. Shame we couldn't have kept him as a 3rd down back. His blocking skills alone would have been well worth the risk of injury

His price tag wasn't. You don't pay a blocking specialist elite money. Ever.

I was at his first game as a Redskin where he busted off that 64 yard touchdown run. I'm definitely gonna miss him, lotta people gave him shit what with being injury prone these last 2 years but he did play with heart and he has always been our best blocking back for a long time. I really wish him success elsewhere, I just wish his time as a Redskin had been better in terms of wins and success.

That's the same play I was going to mention as my own favorite. Actually, Portis scored the touchdown that put us ahead, and then Sean recovered the fumble that put the game out of reach and sealed the playoff spot. What a great five-game run that was.

6,824 yards.
46 touchdowns.
7 seasons.

One can only guess what he could have done with an Hog-like offensive line.

Thank you CP. Godspeed.

Clinton always played hard and you can never ask anything more of a player. I always liked Clinton and I think he will be missed. So as of now, we do not know who is going to take the snap from center or whom he will hand it off to or whom he will throw it to. My, we look like we are going to have a stellar season in Shanahan II.
