Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan

[YT]3_oDyuQR9Pk[/YT] Here’s the easy way to assess the Washington Redskins' decision to select Purdue defensive end Ryan Kerrigan with the 16th overall pick in this year’s draft: They added a strong, versatile pass rusher who can complement burgeoning star Brian Orakpo. Now here’s the better way to evaluate that move: The team also sent a potent message about the near future, one that said energy and attitude will mean as much as talent for new additions to that locker room. As good as Kerrigan is -- he was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2010 -- his approach to the game will pay huge dividends for his new employer. This is a young man who plays every down as if the Lombardi Trophy hangs in the balance. Kerrigan also treats any opportunity he receives as if he’s truly blessed to have one. For a team that has spent the past year coping with the headache that is their highest paid defender, defensive end Albert Haynesworth, this has to be a nice change. Kerrigan should pump new life into that side of the football just with his love of the game. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Hard worker.....the kind of player that will fit into just about any defensive scheme, plus he addresses a need.
I also like the fact he had a full college career having played in 48 games he obviously has a very good understanding of the game. Any change in position shouldn't be considered a drastic move. Shanahan on Kerrigan Mike Shanahan: 4-28 |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
He will be a fan favorite in no time.

How they grouped players together, after the trade back have 2 or 3 guys in mind, and then decide when the time comes. Far cry from Vinny who basically just told people after his picks that he was a slave to his board. And thats not to say the current management didn't emphasize the importance of their draft board but this group seems much more flexible. Why did you take 3 pass catchers? "Well they were the best players on the board so we followed the board and took them." |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I like the pick for a few reasons: Kerrigan fills a need as an OLB opposite Rak, he's a high motor, high character guy who is one of those first to arrive last to leave type players, and we picked up the 47th overall pick in the process. Overall I give a very solid grade to Shanny/Allen's first round.
|
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Two points:
1) Looking back, we will compare Kerrigan (and 2nd round pick) to Blaine Gabbert. Time will tell if this was a good move. 2) Is Kerrigan much better than Cam Jordan? Jordan had a lot of hype.. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I trust in BA! now who do you got in the 2nd round?

The thing I liked about him was the fact that he can play the run to. He's not just one of those finesse, run around the corner types. He will get his own push if he needs to. I know Von Miller was the better prospect and I'm not exactly a trained scout but half the time when I saw the footage of Miller he was getting pushed around and trying to run around people. Kerrigan on the other hand will bush rush you and go through you if needs to. However there also lies the problem. Kerrigan doesn't have a variety of pass rush moves. Though hopefully the fact that Orakpo has discovered this problem with his own game will allow Kerrigan to get to work on it sooner rather then later. |

Plus there currently isn't a #94 on our roster, so he'll get to keep his college number if he wants to. We'll see plenty of Kerrigan jerseys this fall. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Seems like a pretty solid pick...hope he works out. More important are the solid 2nd round picks we picked up. Hopefully we address QB, OL, or WR with those picks and develop them for years to come...time to start building through the draft.

Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
is it just me or does shanny seem upset in this video? at least not the least bit happy. He had to know quinn would be gone. Maybe he really wanted Locker? Maybe Kerrigan really wasn't one of the 2-3 guys he was hoping to get (or maybe he was 3 and shanny just added that in as a freudian slip really hopping for the top 2)
|
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Now we just need to swap both our 2nd rounders with the patriots first two 2nd rounders and take the shanahans qb of choice at 33.

Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Orlando Franklin OG and Dalton?
|
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I gave it an A because I'm really not a hard grader. Not at all. It's just that the Redskins have screwed up so often before that I've never had a chance to give them an A. They filled a need at value and picked up a second round pick in the process. He wasn't BPA, but I'm not a staunch BPA guy. This is a good pick.

youre talking about Shanahan. He could be getting "help" under the podium and he'd have the same face. |

Exactly, this guy is a master of hiding his emotions so don't read into it |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Is the beginning of the age of glory for the white LOLB? :laughing-
I feel that we'll be satisfied with this guy for years to come. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
What are people's thoughts on Mallett?

Better question might be what are peoples thoughts on Stanzi. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I gave the move an a. We essentially made up for the mcnabb trade by moving 6 spots and got a GREAT leader for our defense. This is a guy who will keep the energy up after Fletcher retires.
|
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Better question might be what are peoples thoughts on Stanzi.
Really good value in the third round or later. Could be a very solid NFL pro. Would not take him in the second simply because there will be better players available (Mallett, Kaepernick, Devlin).
|
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Love the pick coupled with picking up an extra 2nd rounder.
A. |

Stanza is the guy I'd target at this point. Could be the next Tom Brady or he could be a wasted pick, but at least he won't be a huge douche like mallet. |

Why did you take 3 pass catchers? "Well they were the best players on the board so we followed the board and took them."
This interesting quote from Shanahan also reveals [to an extent] how he felt about the QB's that were available at # 10 that he chose to pass on. Notice he said Jacksonville needed a QB [like we don't] so obviously he wasn't that high on Gabbert otherwise he would have taken him. [Q] “We felt fortunate,” Shanahan said. “It doesn’t always work out that way. Obviously Jacksonville wanted a quarterback. It was a perfect situation for us. They called us up with about six minutes left, and we were able to make the trade and hopefully [it’s] good for both teams.” [U] The scouting report on Kerrigan I posted in the draft thread but could easily have gotten lost in the traffic. Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
It's an easy A for me.
At 10 we were gong to get a player that could maybe be fantastic or possibly a complete waste. And if it was a QB it had the distinct possibility to set us back even further. Trading back and getting a guy that should be at least a solid long term starter in the league plus that extra 2 is just quality pool. At 16 the guy doesn't have to be a monster...he comes in with little pressure to transform our defense...everyone already looks at him like a piece and we resisted the urge to take one of the incredibly overrated QBs that this draft foisted upon the NFL. On top of that this guy is going to be a by-the-books type of player. We won't be worrying too much about how to convince him to fit into the scheme or anything like that. Having a motor guy with some talent is brilliant. Picture Lorenzo Alexander but with better skills. |

i really dont see kaepernick being a successful nfl qb. just my gut feeling. he will take a lot of time if he ever does though. |

I'm surprised I'm not hearing more about Devlin from analysts. What gives? |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Here is the way I look at it.
The Steelers win football games because of their defense... You make it to the playoffs, and those high power sling 'em offense struggle when the weather gets cold, but the defense is still full throttle. Steelers ahve and breed some of the best LB's in the NFL, and that's the core of their 3-4 scheme. We just added a damn STUD to our LB core. Now.. We trade a 2nd for a later 2nd n a 3rd's and we pick up Casey Mathews... Kerrigan, Mathews, Fletcher, Orackpo That's mean. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I give him an - A - grade. He's not all we need but he can be a vital part to the start.
|
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Kerrigan is a blue-collar, pass rusher. Reminds me, in many ways, of Justin Smith...so I give this pick an A++
Seriously though, solid choice. The pick itself I give a B. Being able to draft him and add another 2nd round pick bumps it up to a B+ |

lol at the 1 F
T.O. Killa really doesn't like this |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I hope this pick works out I gave it a B tho. I hope Dalton is there @ 41 & we trade the 49th pick & add a 3rd rounder that would be such a win for us in this draft.
I'm surprised I'm not hearing more about Devlin from analysts. What gives?
Limited arm strength, looked more uncomfortable in a shirt and shorts than other D-I players.
The latter...who cares. The former is a liability that he'll have to overcome at the next level. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I hope the Skins pick up Ryan Williams. Yes I am a biased for the Hokies but this guy is a complete stud and I believe that he will be the best RB of this class in his career. He really is worth the pick.
|
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Williams is definitely possible...but let's keep this thread about Kerrigan
